Tsunamis can inflict significant damage and casualties both nearfield and after evolving over long propagation distances and impacting distant coastlines. Tsunamis can also effect geomorphologic changes along the coast. Understanding tsunami generation and evolution is of paramount importance for protecting coastal population at risk, coastal structures and the natural environment. Accurately and reliably predicting the initial waveform and the associated coastal effects of tsunamis remains one of the most vexing problems in geophysics, and -with few exceptions- has resisted routine numerical computation or data collection solutions. While ten years ago, it was believed that the generation problem was adequately understood for useful predictions, it is now clear that it is not, especially nearfield. By contrast, the runup problem earlier believed intractable is now well understood for all but the most extreme breaking wave events.

Book excerpt: Submarine mass movements represent major offshore geohazards due to their destructive and tsunami-generation potential. This potential poses a threat to human life as well as to coastal, nearshore and offshore engineering structures. Recent examples of catastrophic submarine landslide events that affected human populations (including tsunamis) are numerous; e.g., Nice airport in 1979, Papua-New Guinea in 1998, Stromboli in 2002, Finneidfjord in 1996, and the 2006 and 2009 failures in the submarine cable network around Taiwan. The Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 also generated submarine landslides that may have amplified effects of the devastating tsunami. Given that 30% of the World’s population live within 60 km of the coast, the hazard posed by submarine landslides is expected to grow as global sea level rises. This elevated awareness of the need for better understanding of submarine landslides is coupled with great advances in submarine mapping, sampling and monitoring technologies. Laboratory analogue and numerical modeling capabilities have also developed significantly of late. Multibeam sonar, 3D seismic reflection, and remote and autonomous underwater vehicle technologies provide hitherto unparalleled imagery of the geology beneath the oceans, permitting investigation of submarine landslide deposits in great detail. Increased and new access to drilling, coring, in situ measurements and monitoring devices allows for ground-thruth of geophysical data and provides access to samples for geotechnical laboratory experiments and information on in situ strength and effective stress conditions of underwater slopes susceptible to fail. Great advances in numerical simulation techniques of submarine landslide kinematics and tsunami propagation, particularly since the 2004 Sumatra tsunami, have also lead to increased understanding and predictability of submarine landslide consequences. This volume consists of the latest scientific research by international experts in geological, geophysical, engineering and environmental aspects of submarine mass failure, focused on understanding the full spectrum of challenges presented by submarine mass movements and their consequences.

While the process of the tsunami generation by earthquakes is reasonably well understood, the generation of tsunami waves during submarine mass failure is not. Estimates of the energy released during a tsunamigenic earthquake and respective tsunami wave draw a clear picture of the efficiency of the tsunami-generating process. However for submarine landslides, this is not as straightforward because the generation process has never been recorded in nature making energy inferences very difficult. Hence the efficiency of submarine landslide as tsunami generators is yet to be conclusively determined. As the result of this uncertainty, different equations, derived from experimental data or theory, result in leading-wave amplitude that vary over 6 orders of magnitude for the same initial slide conditions. To arrive at more robust estimates of the leading-wave characteristics and associated runup, the spatiotemporal dynamics of the coupling between the slide body and water column needs to be investigated. The duration the water surface deformation is coupled with the slide motion is an essential question to shed light on the energy transfer. A parametric study is conducted with the state of-the-art hydrocode iSALE in order to shed light on this complex geophysical event. The mass, viscosity, and depth of submergence are the particular slide parameters varied and their relationship to runup and decoupling time is analyzed.

After the catastrophic 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean, legislation was passed to expand U.S. tsunami warning capabilities. Since then, the nation has made progress in several related areas on both the federal and state levels. At the federal level, NOAA has improved the ability to detect and forecast tsunamis by expanding the sensor network. Other federal and state activities to increase tsunami safety include: improvements to tsunami hazard and evacuation maps for many coastal communities; vulnerability assessments of some coastal populations in several states; and new efforts to increase public awareness of the hazard and how to respond. Tsunami Warning and Preparedness explores the advances made in tsunami detection and preparedness, and identifies the challenges that still remain. The book describes areas of research and development that would improve tsunami education, preparation, and detection, especially with tsunamis that arrive less than an hour after the triggering event. It asserts that seamless coordination between the two Tsunami Warning Centers and clear communications to local officials and the public could create a timely and effective response to coastal communities facing a pending tsuanami. Book excerpt: The eastern coast of USA, including the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), is more prone to tsunamis caused by submarine landslides than earthquakes. The Tsunami Hazard Assessment research program lead by ten Brink, 2009, reported the presence of ancient submarine landslides deposit in the GOM dating back to the post glacial period which indicates that there is a likelihood for tsunami events in the future. In fact, the GOM has some of the largest submarine landslides when compared to landslides off the coast of Oregon, central California and New Jersey. Moreover, the high population density and the ongoing industrial development in the GOM, makes it necessary to assess the hazard and develop mitigation plans that involve the development of inundation map, education, early warning and evacuation plans. Specifically in the GOM, assessing the tsunami hazard is to develop tsunami inundation map to identify potential submarine landslide sources, either by using a probabilistic approach or a deterministic approach that uses worst case landslide-tsunami scenarios. A probabilistic approach in the GOM is more suited due to the lack of earlier records of tsunami caused by submarine landslides. Thus the probabilistic model can mimic or create tsunami scenarios based on distribution of physical and geometrical variables involve in the landslide-tsunami mechanisms. Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is the tool used to generate random variables under certain distribution, and the MCS Model for the GOM generates a large number of submarine landslides with randomized parameters (like location, runout length, depth, headscarp height, width, slope etc.) capable of producing tsunamis. Parameter results are validated to verify if their distribution follow the same distribution from observed landslide events. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Submarine landslides can generate tsunamis, and the generated waves can be catastrophic when a large volume of landslide material is involved. Moreover, large earthquakes are often accompanied by submarine landslides that can enhance the magnitude of the resulting tsunamis. In this thesis, numerical schemes are developed to solve the wave propagation problems generated by submarine landslides. Assuming the landslides in a flow regime, depth-averaged models are studied, and finite volume methods are extended to the fully coupled multi-layer shallow water equations. From the fully coupled model, an efficient simplified approach is derived that is often appropriate for tsunamis generated by submarine landslides. These waves can have relatively short wavelength, and another class of equations may be necessary that can handle the dispersion of waves. Several types of the Boussinesq equations have been reviewed and implemented with a hybrid of high-resolution finite volume and finite difference methods. Stability analysis and convergence tests have been performed for the hybrid scheme. The develpoment has been done in the context of the textsc{Geoclaw} framework, a code designed to handle the single-layer shallow water equations, that uses adaptive mesh refinement to model tsunami propagation on a global scale with inundation of specific regions on a fine grid. The newly developed methods, tested on the exact solutions, are validated by comparing to laboratory experiments and by applying to historic events such as the Papua New Guinea 1998 and Storegga slides. Possible scenarios of submarine landslides and resulting tsunamis on the Washington coast were investigated.
