Book Sub and Supra Second Timing Brain Learning and Development

Download or read book Sub and Supra Second Timing Brain Learning and Development written by Lihan Chen and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time perception in the range of milliseconds to a few seconds is essential for many important sensory and perceptual tasks including speech perception, motion perception, motor coordination, and cross-modal interaction. For the brain to be in synchrony with the environment, the physical differences in the speeds of light and sound, as well as stimuli from other modalities such as odors, must be processed and coordinated (Pöppel & Bao 2014; Bao et al., 2015). Time is a subjective feeling that is modulated by emotional states which trigger temporal distortions (temporal dilation vs. contraction) (Wittmann et al., 2014), hence give rise to subjective time that may be different to event time as initially registered in the brain. Recent research suggests that time perception in a multisensory world is subject to prior task experience and shaped by (statistical) learning processes. Humans are active learners. That is, the engagement of the own body in a timing task within a perceptual-action loop will make a noticeable difference in timing performance, as compared to when humans only passively perceive the same perceptual scenario (Bao et al., 2015; Chen & Vroomen, 2013). This Research Topic of “Sub-and Supra-Second Timing: Brain, Learning and Development” has integrated sixteen submissions of novel research on sub- and supra-timing. We have categorized the papers in this topic into the following four themes, from which we can deduce trends of research about multisensory timing in the sub- and supra-second range: Sensory timing, interaction and reliability Adaptive representation of time, learning and temporal prediction Sensorimotor synchronization, embodiment and coordination Perspective of psychological moment and temporal organization Overall, the collections in “Sub-and Supra-Second Timing: Brain, Learning and Development” show some recent trends and debates in multisensory timing research as well as provide a venue to inspire future work in multisensory timing.

Book Interval Timing and Time Based Decision Making

Download or read book Interval Timing and Time Based Decision Making written by Warren H. Meck and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perception of time is crucial for everyday activities from the sleep–wake cycle to playing and appreciating music, verbal communication, to the determination of the value of a particular behavior. With regard to the last point, making decisions is heavily influenced by the duration of the various options, the duration of the expected delays for receiving the options, and the time constraints for making a choice. Recent advances suggest that the brain represents time in a distributed manner and reflects time as a result of temporal changes in network states and/or by the coincidence detection of the phase of different neural populations. Moreover, intrinsic oscillatory properties of neural circuits could determine timed motor responses. This Research Topic, partly an emergence of a Satellite EBBS meeting sponsored by the COST-Action TIMELY, will discuss how time in the physical world is reconstructed, distorted and modified in brain networks by emotion, learning and neuropathology. This Research Topic on Timing contains up-to-date reviews regarding the relationship between time and decision-making with respect to the underlying psychological and physiological mechanisms responsible for anticipation and evaluation processes.

Book Spike timing dependent plasticity

Download or read book Spike timing dependent plasticity written by Henry Markram and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hebb's postulate provided a crucial framework to understand synaptic alterations underlying learning and memory. Hebb's theory proposed that neurons that fire together, also wire together, which provided the logical framework for the strengthening of synapses. Weakening of synapses was however addressed by "not being strengthened", and it was only later that the active decrease of synaptic strength was introduced through the discovery of long-term depression caused by low frequency stimulation of the presynaptic neuron. In 1994, it was found that the precise relative timing of pre and postynaptic spikes determined not only the magnitude, but also the direction of synaptic alterations when two neurons are active together. Neurons that fire together may therefore not necessarily wire together if the precise timing of the spikes involved are not tighly correlated. In the subsequent 15 years, Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity (STDP) has been found in multiple brain brain regions and in many different species. The size and shape of the time windows in which positive and negative changes can be made vary for different brain regions, but the core principle of spike timing dependent changes remain. A large number of theoretical studies have also been conducted during this period that explore the computational function of this driving principle and STDP algorithms have become the main learning algorithm when modeling neural networks. This Research Topic will bring together all the key experimental and theoretical research on STDP.

Book Law in the Time of Oxymora

Download or read book Law in the Time of Oxymora written by Rostam J. Neuwirth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do different concepts like true lie, bad luck, honest thief, old news, spacetime, glocalization, symplexity, sustainable development, constant change, soft law, substantive due process, pure law, bureaucratic efficiency and global justice have in common? What connections do they share with innumerable paradoxes, like the ones of happiness, time, globalization, sex, and of free will and fate? Law in the Time of Oxymora provides answers to these conundrums by critically comparing the apparent rise in recent years of the use of rhetorical figures called "essentially oxymoronic concepts" (i.e. oxymoron, enantiosis and paradoxes) in the areas of art, science and law. Albeit to varying degrees, these concepts share the quality of giving expression to apparent contradictions. Through this quality, they also challenge the scientific paradigm rooted in the dualistic thinking and binary logic that is traditionally used in the West, as opposed to the East, where a paradoxical mode of thinking and fuzzy logic is said to have been cultivated. Following a review of oxymora and paradoxes in art and various scientific writings, hundreds of "hard cases" featuring oxymora and a comprehensive review of the legal literature are discussed, revealing evidence suggesting that the present scientific paradigm of dualism alone will no longer be able to tackle the challenges arising from increasing diversity and complexity coupled with an apparent acceleration of change. Law in the Time of Oxymora reaches the surprising conclusion that essentially oxymoronic concepts may inaugurate a new era of cognition, involving the ways the senses interact and how we reason, think and make decisions in law and in life.

Book Phonological and phonetic competence between grammar signal processing and neural activity

Download or read book Phonological and phonetic competence between grammar signal processing and neural activity written by Ulrike Domahs and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The starting point for this Research Topic was a Priority Programme on experimental research in phonology and phonetics which was funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG) from 2006 to 2013. Based on this programme, the aim of this Research Topic is to draw together empirical work in the field of segmental and prosodic processing and representation and phonological theory. Contributions are encouraged that focus on the exploration of human cognitive, articulatory and perceptual abilities dealing with all types of phonetic and phonological entities. More specifically, papers are encouraged that address the interface of the speech sound systems investigated in phonology, the representation about articulation, perception, acquisition and processing established in phonetics and psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics. Topics of investigation could be: (1) phonological representations in the mental lexicon – specified minimally in terms of categorical phonological information or as variable phonetic imprint of the occurrences in the input, (2) sounds and sound-changing processes – systemic and functional aspects, (3) prosodic units such as syllables and metrical feet, as well as the phonological phrases that are connected to syntactic units of the sentence – systemic- properties, processing and phonetic consequences, (4) tones as building blocks of the sentence melody – their relation to the level of linguistic expressions on the one hand, their phonetic realisation (e.g., tonal height and contours) and perception on the other hand. Experimental contributions making use of behavioural methods including eye movement studies and methods like EEG, fMRI, MEG and EPA to investigate production and perception of phonetic and phonological entities are particularly welcome. We welcome original research articles, reviews, theory articles, methodological articles, as well as brief commentaries/opinion pieces (for further information see here).

Download or read book The Magnificence of the 3 written by Timeout A. Taumua and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hi. If you are one to have given up wondering if the Tree of Knowledge, Tree of Life, Garden of Eden, and the Ark of the Testimony/Covenant were real or just fancy stories for children and the simple-minded, wonder no more. Our scientists found them and their identities are revealed here in full. There are three main characters in book: God, the invisible Designer God's First-born, the invisible Atom God's Helpers, the invisible Emotions. I ran across God's treasures accidentally while following the tracts of the ATOM that God left in the biblical record parabolically. God was fully aware of the atom when He declared in Genesis 1: 1 that "He created the heavens and earth." The "THE MAGNIFICENCE OF THE 3" title was deducted from a quote attributed to Nikola Tesla, a mechanical and electrical genius of an engineer who said: "If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6, and 9, then you would have the key to the universe". I am claiming that I found Tesla's magnificence of the 3, and it was a reference to the ATOM and its three particles: (1) positive proton (Good), (2) negative electron (Evil), and (3), neutral neutron (God). When I began researching for project, I was not looking for these biblical icons. Then one day, the ATOM popped up on my news feed and while admiring its mechanics, I immediately saw the parallel of its scientific structure, to the spiritual structure of the relationship God urged us to have with Him. Then I searched for the Atom in Biblical record and found it. This was unexpected but the claims are presented for your review. Once I saw the parallel, God's parabolic stories opened up for me. For example, how could Eve talk to a reptile? How could the devil turn the perfect humans against their Master on the first try? Why are innocent children born in sin if man was created perfect? Why were Abraham's descendants designated to be enslaved before Abraham had a son? If man was born to be immortal in the flesh, why was there a Tree of Life in the Garden? Who was Cain's wife and what was the mark God gave him? Was there a scientific meaning to the changes in diet after the flood? What were the meanings of the curse and blessing given by Noah to his three sons? Why would a loving, forgiving, and merciful God punish up to three and four generations of innocent children for the sins of the fathers? Who were the sons of gods and daughters of men? If the crucifixion was the truth, why isn't there any record of it except the New Testament? These are my personal questions that are dealt with in this book and many others. Book is compact with foundational information that better people will come along and expand upon for your benefit. Examples of scientific subjects involved are the atom, emotions, the Big Bang theory, the social brain hypothesis, the triune brain, neurons, evolution, and new scientific subjects such as the wood wide web, and epigenetics. In case you wonder about God's Omnipresence. Wonder no more as the secret is in the ATOM. Equip yourself properly as a Priest beginning with this book.
