This challenge is much greater in the developing countries than the developed world. Many breeding programs are based on selection of desirable parents for hybridization that's the main source to create genetic variation which is heritable to offspring. This study was carried out to have information on the magnitude of heritability and genetic advance of various important wheat parameters as it plays an important role for planning breeding strategy. For this purpose second filial (F2) generation of ten cross combinations involving seven wheat varieties/genotypes were studied. These were planted in field in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. At maturity 200 plants from each cross and 20 plants from each parent were taken and data were recorded. The information derived will be very helpful to make improvement in wheat yield through reliable selection as it is suggested that varieties/genotypes showing good results should be given due importance in future breeding programs.

In Europe, where wheat is the main staple, bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) covers the majority of land on which wheat is cropped. Wheat breeders and technologists have contributed greatly to the continued success of bread wheat and its products. The `bread-making quality' of a wheat variety can be described in relation to the processing its kernels must undergo to make a good bread. Bread wheat kernels must be suitable for proper milling into a flour that can produce a dough capable of becoming fine bread. The type of bread varies depending on local bread-making practices. Part I of this book contains a study of the anatomy and chemical composition of wheat kernels, and of the fundamental difference between `soft' and `hard' kernelled varieties. It relates these characteristics to the processes of milling, dough-making and manufacturing of bread, and to biscuit and pasta making. The genetic basis for these characteristics is illustrated, and assay methods for characterizing wheat varieties - ranging from Saunders' chewing test to the most recent developments in glutenin and gliadin research - are evaluated. Book excerpt: Increasing grain yield in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a challenging task, because yield is a complex trait controlled by many genes and highly influenced by environmental factors. The genetic control of yield components and other traits associated with yield may be less complex and thus more manageable for breeding. This study seeks to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for these traits. Two new genetic linkage maps were constructed from recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from crosses between the Oregon soft white winter wheat variety Tubbs and a Western European hard red winter wheat variety, Einstein. A third linkage map was constructed from RILs from a cross with Tubbs and a Western European experimental hard red winter wheat line. A combination of Diversity Arrays Technology (DArT), Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR), orw5, and B1 markers were used to construct genetic linkage maps. Two replications of the RIL populations were grown in yield trial sized plots at Corvallis, OR and Pendleton, OR in 2009. The RILs were evaluated for grain yield, spikes per m2, fertile spikelets per spike, sterile spikelets per spike, seeds per spike, seeds per fertile spikelet, average seed weight, growing degree days (GDD) to flowering, GDD to physiological maturity, GDD of grain fill, plant height, test weight, and percent grain protein. Composite interval mapping (CIM) detected 146 QTLs for these traits spread across all chromosomes except for 6D. Thirty six percent of all of the QTLs detected were in close proximity to four loci: Rht-B1, Rht-D1, B1, and Xgwm372. The use of factor analysis to aid in QTL mapping for correlated traits related to spike morphology was explored. Quantitative trait loci mapping of factor scores for these traits potentially showed an increase in statistical power to detect QTLs and a decrease in the probability of type I error over mapping the traits individually.

Yet the genetical study of continuous variation has lagged far behind that of discontinuous variation. The reason for this situation is basically methodological. Mendel gave us not merely his principles of heredity, but also a method of experiment by which these principles could be tested over a wider range of living species, and extended into the elaborate genetical theory of today. The power of this tool is well attested by the speed with which genetics has grown. In less than fifty years, it has not only developed a theoretical structure which is unique in the biological sciences, but has established a union with nuclear cytology so close that the two have become virtually a single science offering us a new approach to problems so diverse as those of evolution, development, disease, cellular chemistry and human welfare. Much of this progress would have been impossible and all would have been slower without the Mendelian method of recognizing and using unit differences in the genetic materials.
