Book Designing Mental Health Services for Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Designing Mental Health Services for Children and Adolescents written by J. Gerald Young and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exceptional opportunity is being missed. A chance to alleviate suffering and to achieve health care cost reductions for society is available, but is being ignored. There is an explosion of new knowledge about the emotional and intellectual development of children, and the causes and treatment of psychiatric disorders of children and adolescents. Research from diverse disciplines such as the developmental neurosciences, psychoanalysis, psychopharmacology, developmental psychology, and genetics propels us forward,. However, the effects of this new knowledge reach children and adolscents slowly, or not at all. The long history of neglect of the mental health of children and adolescents is now exaggurated by sudden, disruptive economic and political influences on mental health services for children and adolescents in most countries. Prevention and treatment of emotional and intellectual problems in childhood and adolescence have vastly improved, but utilization of these advantages lags behind. This disappointing incongruity stimulates a need to document our knowledge about these services and systems and to make it more broadly available. This is the primary aim of this new volume by a team of distinguished contributors. It reviews the causes and prevalences of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents, the problem of health care financing for these services, the underutilization of these services, our current understanding of the outcomes of treatment, and the new models for both treatment and prevention. The book also provides a survey of current mental health services and sytems for children and adolescents in countries across the world. Information drawn from these multiple perspectives is has been used by a group of international experts to develop the Venice Declaration, providing specific guidelines for families, clinicians, administrators, and policy-makers who are concerned with the development of children and adolescents, and are committed to a more efficient economic approach to mental health services.

Book Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Europe

Download or read book Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Europe written by Helmut Remschmidt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of this book is to provide an overview of child and adolescent psychiatry in Europe, focusing on the historical development, current situation, and future perspectives of the specialty. Child and adolescent psychiatry is now acknowledged as a medical specialty or subspecialty in almost all European countries. Also, the number of child psychia trists has increased dramatically over the last decade. However, there are still enormous differences from country to country, not only with regard to the num ber of specialists, but also with regard to the extent and nature of services provided and their diagnostic and therapeutic orientation. Furthermore, important differ ences exist in the training curricula for child and adolescent psychiatry within medicine and other professional fields, both inside and outside the universities, and in the image and importance of this discipline to the public. This diversity is also reflected in the reports on the historical development, current situation and future perspectives of child and adolescent psychiatry in 31 European countries, all following the same structure in order to facilitate compa rability. This structure comprises (1) the historical development and the current situation, (2) classification systems and diagnostic and therapeutic methods, (3) structure and organization of services, (4) cooperation with other medical and non-medical disciplines, (5) training and continuing medical education, (6) research, and (7) future perspectives.

Download or read book Redressing the Emperor written by John Lyons and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-07-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyons provides a fresh and thought-provoking understanding of the children's public mental health system, as well as the need to foster its evolution and improvement. He presents the history of child mental health systems, including the U.S. system's roots and the early 19th-century case of the Wild Boy of Aveyron, which demonstrated the potentially therapeutic effects of environment. He shows us why modern leaders and presidents have issued calls for improvements to the U.S. child mental health system, and what barriers have slowed or even halted this evolution. Such barriers, Lyons explains, can be removed with community development and better clinical outcomes management. In addition to providing information for parents, family members, and advocates for improving the lives of children needing mental health care, this work will also interest clinicians, policy makers and students in social work, clinical psychiatry, public health and public policy.

Book Families and the Mental Health System for Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Families and the Mental Health System for Children and Adolescents written by Craig Anne Heflinger and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1996-03-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family plays both direct and indirect roles in the formal mental health services sector, from determining whether and when a child enters treatment to providing the context within which all therapeutic gains are played out. Providing a much-needed analysis, the contributors to this volume examine a myriad of policy, research, and practice issues related to families of children with serious emotional disorders. Families and the Mental Health System for Children and Adolescents considers issues including characteristics and service strategies for family-centered service delivery, the role that society can play in strengthening the family and preventing child and youth emotional disorders, the supports for and barriers inhibiting parent-professional partnerships, the complexities of assessing family functioning, and culturally sensitive service delivery. Throughout this timely volume, the contributors take into account the complexity and diversity of families today and the consequent impact on service delivery at the societal and policy levels. An important resource, Families and the Mental Health System for Children and Adolescents critically examines an issue of interest to practitioners, researchers, and students in evaluation, family studies, developmental psychology, public policy, and social work.

Book New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research

Download or read book New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, child protective services receive reports of child abuse and neglect involving six million children, and many more go unreported. The long-term human and fiscal consequences of child abuse and neglect are not relegated to the victims themselves-they also impact their families, future relationships, and society. In 1993, the National Research Council (NRC) issued the report, Under-standing Child Abuse and Neglect, which provided an overview of the research on child abuse and neglect. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research updates the 1993 report and provides new recommendations to respond to this public health challenge. According to this report, while there has been great progress in child abuse and neglect research, a coordinated, national research infrastructure with high-level federal support needs to be established and implemented immediately. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research recommends an actionable framework to guide and support future child abuse and neglect research. This report calls for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to child abuse and neglect research that examines factors related to both children and adults across physical, mental, and behavioral health domains-including those in child welfare, economic support, criminal justice, education, and health care systems-and assesses the needs of a variety of subpopulations. It should also clarify the causal pathways related to child abuse and neglect and, more importantly, assess efforts to interrupt these pathways. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research identifies four areas to look to in developing a coordinated research enterprise: a national strategic plan, a national surveillance system, a new generation of researchers, and changes in the federal and state programmatic and policy response.
