Book excerpt: In Sri Lanka, the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) employs thousands of unmarried rural women, and their migration has aroused deep anxieties over female morality and ideal conduct. This book focuses on the global factory workers based in the FTZ, and analyzes intersections of gender, class and sexuality by looking at the sexual lives and struggles of the female workers. Exploring the alternative sexual world created by Sri Lanka’s female global factory workers who engage in practices—such as premarital sex, unmarried cohabitation, and, to a lesser extent, lesbianism—that mainstream Sinhalese Buddhist culture considers taboo, the author demonstrates that the articulations of good and bad women in relation to sexual behavior has rendered global workers’ sexual lives "unutterable," leading to zones of silence, contradictory articulations and performances. Taking the reader into the forbidden zones of sexual discourses, choices, acts, and texts enacted and expressed in visible arenas yet remain unseen, unread or misread by onlookers, the book critically investigate how cultural, economic and political processes are implicated in the construction and expression of working class female sexualities. An important contribution to the field of gender studies, the book addresses issues surrounding sexuality, particularly how it is shaped by global production networks as well as patriarchal nationalist projects. It is of interest to students and scholars of South Asian Studies and Gender Studies.

Policies and programs that address violence against women and girls are analyzed in order to highlight key actors and promising interventions. Book excerpt: Sri Lanka is experiencing the prolonged impacts of a nearly 30-year civil war which ended in 2009. Living in a post-conflict area has been found in multiple settings to be associated with increased likelihood of intimate partner violence and girl child marriage, as well as poor health outcomes such as reduced access to reproductive health care and child malnutrition. Using data from the 2016 Sri Lankan Demographic and Health Survey, this dissertation aims to understand associations between proximity to conflict, girl child marriage, intimate partner violence (IPV), and reproductive and child health outcomes. First, this dissertation examines the potential role of girl child marriage as a mediating factor in the associations between proximity to conflict and intimate partner violence in Sri Lanka; finding that residing in districts central to conflict (compared to districts distal to conflict) is associated with increased odds of girl child marriage and all forms of intimate partner violence, and that child marriage is a partial mediator of the association between centrality to conflict and all forms of intimate partner violence. Second, this dissertation examines how girl child marriage and intimate partner violence are associated with women's contraceptive method type, and how proximity to conflict moderates those relationships; finding that girl child marriage, physical IPV, and proximity to conflict are associated with differences in contraceptive method type, and that proximity to conflict moderates the associations of girl child marriage and physical IPV with contraceptive method type. Third, this dissertation explores whether maternal child marriage and intimate partner violence in Sri Lanka are associated with stunting (low height for age) among children ages 0-5 in Sri Lanka, and whether proximity to conflict moderates those relationships; finding that children in districts proximal and central to conflict experience reduced stunting compared to children in districts distal to conflict, and that proximity to conflict moderates associations of maternal sexual IPV and maternal emotional IPV with stunting. The findings of this dissertation advance the study of gender-based violence (GBV) and health in post-conflict Sri Lanka and add to the global literature on the health and social impacts of armed conflict.

Based on extensive field research and an original dataset on conflict-related SGBV, Davies and True show how reporting is significantly constrained by a variety of factors, including normalized gendered violence as well as political dynamics affecting local civil society, humanitarian, and international organizations. They address the real-world limitations of data collection and argue that these constraints reinforce a culture of silence and impunity that perpetuates SGBV and permits governments to abrogate their responsibility for this violence.

Bringing together scholars, legal practitioners and human rights advocates, the book examines the intersections between gender, violence and the state in Asian contexts. It considers the role of state institutions in perpetuating and preventing violence based on gender and identity, and thus contributes to growing scholarship around due diligence standards under international law. In this paper, we explore the economic consequences of violence against women in sub-Saharan Africa using large demographic and health survey data collected pre-pandemic. Relying on a two-stage least square method to address endogeneity, we find that an increase in the share of women subject to violence by 1 percentage point can reduce economic activities (as proxied by nightlights) by up to 8 percent. This economic cost results from a significant drop in female employment. Our results also show that violence against women is more detrimental to economic development in countries without protective laws against domestic violence, in natural resource rich countries, in countries where women are deprived of decision-making power and during economic downturns. Beyond the moral imperative, the findings highlight the importance of combating violence against women from an economic standpoint, particularly by reinforcing laws against domestic violence and strengthening women’s decision-making power.
