Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study estimates the changes in Total Factor Productivity (TFP) of the Indian chemical sector during the period 1980-81 to 2001-02. The Malmquist indices of TFP growth are computed and decomposed into technical change and efficiency change. The obtained estimates of TFP change at the aggregate and sectoral levels indicate that the net impact of economic reforms on the productivity growth of chemical sector was negative. It is evident from the study that the negative TFP change in the chemical sector at the aggregate level aggravated (from 0.4% to 4.1%) in the post-reform period. It is seen that technical change is the factor that leads to deterioration in the overall productivity of the Indian chemical sector. Similar trends are also observed at the sub-sectoral level.

Chemicals have contributed in various sectors like food industry, fertilizers, perfumery, fragrance and flavour etc. Chemicals are used to make a wide variety of consumer goods, as well as thousands inputs to agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and service industries. There are numerous chemicals produced in chemical industry for example chloroform, caffeine, fertilizers , dyes, drug intermediates, herbicide, inorganic salts, copper sulphate, acetaldehyde etc. The chemical industry itself consumes 26 percent of its own output. The Chemical Industry in India is based on the idea of diversification. For example inorganic chemicals is the sector where the growth rate is near about 9% and the chemicals produced in this sector are mainly used in alkalis, fertilizers, etc. Depending on the product categories the chemical industry is divided in many other sectors like drugs and pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, fine chemicals like dyes and paints etc. The chemical industry in India which generates almost 13% of total national export is growing annually at a growth rate anywhere between 10% and 12%. This book majorly deals with the molecular formula, raw materials, properties, laboratory testing, manufacturing process explained with flow diagrams and uses of the chemicals. Acetaldehyde is also used as an aromatic agent and is found naturally in fruits and fruit juices. Formaldehyde, also known as methanal, is a colorless and flammable gas that has a pungent smell and is soluble in water. Formaldehyde is used in Circuit Board Manufacture, Laboratory Chemicals, Paper Coatings, Photochemicals, Printed Circuit Board Manufacturing and Rubber Manufacture. It is the physical relation between input and output which determines the cost of production. Production represents functional relationship between quantities of inputs and amount of output produced. Production is an economic activity. Production is used for an activity of making some material. In economics, production is used in a wider sense. 1.2 Importance of Production: Price theory plays an important role in the theory of production. This provides a base for analysis of relationship between costs and amounts of output. Cost along with demand and supply of a product determine the price of a product. Cost of production is determined by the prices of inputs of production and thereby the price of product. Secondly, the basis of theory of firm demand for factors of production is theory of production. The theory of production plays a pivotal role in theory of firm. The theory of firm deals with the level of output whichwill produce in turn the maximum profits. The firm’s marginal and average costs of production decide the profits maximizing output besides the demand conditions. In addition to the prices of inputs, the changes in marginal and average costs of production as a result of increase in output are determined by the physical relationship between inputs and output.
