The first issue addressed is that of air properties at increased temperatures. Thermodynamic and transport properties of chemical equilibrium air are found for temperatures up to 30,000 K for a pressure range from 1x10-4 to 100 atm. This work also covers adding equilibrium air chemistry to the computational fluid dynamics computer code known as AVUS. The second issue addressed is the carbuncle problem. A grid study is performed and recommendations as to what types of structured grids should be used to reduce the carbuncle problem are made. Grid aspect ratio and the alignment of the grid to the flow can be used to reduce the effects of the carbuncle phenomenon. Another mechanism causing the carbuncle phenomenon is the alignment of the grids with the shock. The third issue addressed is the domain of applicability of the perfect gas model, equilibrium air model, nonequilibrium air model, and thermo-chemical nonequilibrium air model. A computational study is carried out using AVUS to determine the regions of applicability of these air models for a blunt body at various velocities and altitudes. Richardson made the first reported attempt to predict the weather by solving partial differential equations numerically, by hand! It is generally accepted that Richardson's work, though unsuccess ful, marked the beginning of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a large branch of Scientific Computing today. His work had the four distinguishing characteristics of CFD: a PRACTICAL PROBLEM to solve, a MATHEMATICAL MODEL to represent the problem in the form of a set of partial differen tial equations, a NUMERICAL METHOD and a COMPUTER, human beings in Richardson's case. Eighty years on and these four elements remain the pillars of modern CFD. It is therefore not surprising that the generally accepted definition of CFD as the science of computing numerical solutions to Partial Differential or Integral Equations that are models for fluid flow phenomena, closely embodies Richardson's work. COMPUTERS have, since Richardson's era, developed to unprecedented levels and at an ever decreasing cost. PRACTICAL PROBLEMS to solved nu merically have increased dramatically. In addition to the traditional demands from Meteorology, Oceanography, some branches of Physics and from a range of Engineering Disciplines, there are at present fresh demands from a dynamic and fast-moving manufacturing industry, whose traditional build-test-fix approach is rapidly being replaced by the use of quantitative methods, at all levels. The need for new materials and for decision-making under envi ronmental constraints are increasing sources of demands for mathematical modelling, numerical algorithms and high-performance computing.

Book excerpt: This entry describes the experimental work conducted in the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College in connection with Test Problems 1 and 2 of the "Workshop on Hypersonic Flows for Reentry Problems, Part I". These are defined as follows: Test Problem 1 Flow Over a Slender Cone Test Problem 2 Turbulent Base Flow The main requirement of this text is to present the experimental data for direct comparison with the predictions of CFD codes. We have therefore concentrated mainly on a factual statement of measuring techniques and results, together with an assessment of experimental accuracy. Future publications will be devoted to more extensive physical interpretations and discussions of the results. We have produced a large volume of data, some of which were categorised as "MANDATORY" and some as "OPTIONAL" for the purposes of CFD validation. However, only the "MANDATORY" data are presented here, although the other data are available and will be published separately later. 2. EXPERIMENTAL ARRANGEMENT 2. 1 The Test Facility The experiments were conducted in the Imperial College No. 2 Gun tunnel. This facility is a conventional intermittent blowdown tunnel with a contoured Mach 9 (nominal) axisymmetric nozzle fed by a free piston compression heater.
