The participants in that symposium were Jack Atkinson, Martin Maehr, Dick De Charms, Joel Raynor, and Dave Hunt. The subsequent response to that symposium indicated a "coming of age" for motivation theory in terms of education. Soon afterward, at a Motivation in Education Conference at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, it became apparent that due to this emergence of motivation what was needed was a comprehensive perspective as to the state of the art of achievement theory. Achievement theory had by now well surpassed its beginnings in the 1950s and 1960s and was ready for a composite presentation and profile of the recent research and theories of motivation. Thus, this volume was born. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each contribu tor to this book as well as Robert L. Linn who critically reviewed several of the manuscripts. Thanks are also due to my former graduate advisors, Martin L. Maehr, Maurice Tatsuoka, and Harry Triandis, for the viewpoints given me in graduate school education which I hope have benefitted this under taking. Book excerpt: "This study focuses on Asian Americans and their higher eduation experience; notably, it explains how their various background characteristics explain various levels of educational achievements. This study was conceived due in part to the paucity of information regarding Asian American who do not fall within the rubric of the "Model Minorities" and largely to scholars pointing in the direction of studying the variability of the Asian American experience in college. Respondents were classified based on a 2x2 matrix categorized by achievement levels and ethnic identity. Outcome variables assessed were levels of academic and social self-efficacy, which in turn were compared to reported grade point average. Mediating variables were controlled for when appicable. The last portion of the analysis assessed level of college adjustment (and its various components) and the contriibution of the self-efficacy variables in explaining some of the variability. The results were not surprising and under-girded previous findings; Ethnically attached Asian-Americans derived most of their achievement motivation form external sources (family, social expectations, peers), not to high levels of academic self-efficacy. In addition, high levels of academic achievement for these Asian-Americans also translate to relatively lower levels of personal and academic adjustment."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of this Research Topic is to analyze and identify the main family and contextual variables that are involved in the process of carrying out homework. This will require studying the role played by teachers, students, and families in order to ensure that schoolwork is a useful learning tool. Although the role of the student is, obviously, crucial in homework, research has focused on the cumulative time spent by the student carrying out homework. However, the time spent on homework is not in itself evidence of the student’s involvement nor is time spent indicative of quality time. Indeed, an excess of time can sometimes denote low competence in a field of knowledge, while spending less time on homework could be indicative of high competence. It is more likely that a high dedication of time spent on homework reflects high motivation, or comprehension deficits, rather than commitment to learning or academic motivation. In tandem with the role of the student, teachers, as responsible for prescribing homework assignments for students, also become central players in the process of completing homework assignments. The decisions that teachers make about homework prescriptions, and the amount and type of tasks they set, will determine, to a large extent, the quality of the homework process including the student’s motivation and the student’s level of engagement with homework. Furthermore, the fact that homework is useful, interesting and motivating for students, will depend on how the teacher prescribes those tasks and the connection established with classroom learning. Teacher feedback also acquires particular relevance for this point by helping the students to accurately estimate the quality of their progress and overcome the difficulties they may have encountered in carrying out their homework. Lastly, the effectiveness of teacher feedback depends on its contribution to the student’s educational progress and how that student will perform in the future. In addition to the student who performs the task and the teacher who prescribes and corrects it, we must not lose sight of parents’ role. Although there are discrepancies regarding the role that parents play in relation to homework, it is evident that their implication has important consequences not only on the final result of those tasks but also on the very process of carrying them out. Everything seems to indicate that the family environment and, more specifically, the support and feedback provided by parents is a factor that can determine the involvement of students in school duties. In this way, providing emotional support encouraging children to get involved can contribute positively to improving their motivation and interest in the performance of homework. The objective of this Research Topic is to provide researchers and professionals in psychology and education settings with some of the most recent empirical evidence regarding the homework process, its prescription and correction. Overall, we aim to cease making homework a source of conflict and controversy at the socio-educational level in order to provide useful instruments for improving the quality of student learning. Some of the problems are violence towards people; child abuse; drug abuse at increasingly early ages; integration problems due to immigration; dropping out of school; and typical problems related to student development, personality, disabilities, social and psychical maladjustment, teenagers socioaffective relationships, etc. Research on school success and failure has a long history, but there is still no agreement concerning the prevalence of these variables to explain academic achievement, the relationship between those variables, and which other variables modulate their level of impact. For many years, cognitive psychology has emphasized cognitive function as the most relevant for learning in school. However, recent studies highlight the importance of motivational and affective functions in building consistent models to explain learning and academic achievement. This change of perspective, from the classical cognitive model to a self-regulated learning model, has implied a new orientation in the research of the factors involved in school success and failure. Self-regulated learning models try to integrate students cognitive, socioaffective, and behavioral aspects. These models describe the different components involved in successful learning at all school stages, explaining reciprocal relationships between those components and directly relating learning to personal achievement, motivation, volition, and emotions. With this new paradigm, students not only contribute to strengthening their intelligence, but also their motivational and emotional qualities, all related to achieving personal balance. This book presents studies, ideas, and recommendations to shed light on the complex educational world. Education has limits and difficulties, but it is also the only instrument that can develop students potential into personal success.
