Book Study Of Pulsed Laser Ablated Barium Strontium Titanate Thin Flims For Dynamic Random Access Memory Applications

Download or read book Study Of Pulsed Laser Ablated Barium Strontium Titanate Thin Flims For Dynamic Random Access Memory Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study describes the growth and characterization of pulsed laser ablated Bao.sSro.sTiOs (BST) thin films. Emphasis has been laid on the study of a plausible correlation between structure and property in order to optimize the processing parameters suitably for required application. An attempt has been made to understand the basic properties such as, origin of dielectric response, charge transfer under low and high-applied electric fields across the BST capacitor and finally the dielectric breakdown process. Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction on the application of ferroelectric thin films in microelectronic industry and its growth techniques. It also addresses the present issues involved in the introduction of BST as a capacitor material for high-density dynamic random access memories. Chapter 2 outlines the motivation for the present study and briefly outlines the research work involved. Chapter 3 describes the experimental procedure involved in the growth and characterization of BST thin films using pulsed laser ablation technique. Details include the setup design for PLD growth, material synthesis for the ceramic targets, deposition conditions used for thin film growth and basic characterizations methods used for study of the grown films. Chapter 4 describes the effect of systematic variation of deposition parameters on the physical and electrical properties of the grown BST films. The variation in processing conditions has been found to directly affect the film crystallinity, structure and morphology. The change observed in these physical properties may also be correlated to the observed electrical properties. This chapter summarizes the optimal deposition conditions required for growing BST thin films using a pulsed laser ablation technique. Microstructure of BST films has been categorized into two types: (a) Type I structure, with multi-grains through the film thickness, for amorphous as-grown films after high temperature annealing (exsitu crystalli.

Book Investigation of the Characteristics of Ferroelectric Thin Films Deposited by Pulsed Laser Ablation

This book was released on 1994 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferroelectric thin films of barium strontium titanate (BSTO) have been deposited on bare and metallized substrates by the pulsed laser ablation method under different oxygen ambients (150 mT and 50 mT). Under an oxygen pressure of 150 mT, the film composition was similar to that of its ablation target composition, viz. Ba(0.6)Sr(0.4)TiO3. However, when the films were deposited under the lower oxygen pressure, x-ray diffraction studies showed the presence of a secondary phase. The electrical characteristics of the films were measured to examine the effect of the stoichiometry on the dielectric constant and tunability. jg.

Book Microstructure and Nonstoichiometry of Barium Strontium Titanate Thin Films for Dram Applications

Download or read book Microstructure and Nonstoichiometry of Barium Strontium Titanate Thin Films for Dram Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we investigate the microstructural accommodation of nonstoichiometry in (Ba(subscript x)Sr{sub 1-x}Ti{sub 1+y}O{sub 3+z}) thin films grown by chemical vapor deposition. Films with three different (Ba+Sr)/Ti ratios of 49/51 (y=0.04 in the notation of the formula above), of 48/52 (y=0.08) and of 46.5/53.5 (y=O.15), were studied. High-resolution electron microscopy is used to study the microstructure of the BST films. High-spatial resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is used to reveal changes in chemistry and local atomic environment both at grain boundaries and within grains as a function of titanium excess. We find an amorphous phase at the grain boundaries and grain boundary segregation of excess titanium in the samples with y=0.15. In addition, EELS is also used to show that excess titanium is being partially accommodated in the grain interior. Implications for the film electrical and dielectric properties are outlined.

Book Microstructural and Electrical Characterization of Barium Strontium Titanate Based Solid Solution Thin Films Deposited on Ceramic Substrates by Pulsed Laser Deposition

Download or read book Microstructural and Electrical Characterization of Barium Strontium Titanate Based Solid Solution Thin Films Deposited on Ceramic Substrates by Pulsed Laser Deposition written by Costas G. Fountzoulas and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferroelectrics are multicomponent materials with a wealth of interesting and useful properties, such as piezoelectricity. The dielectric constant of the BSTO ferroelectrics can be changed by applying an electric field. Variable dielectric constant results in a change in phase velocity in the device allowing it to be tuned in real time for a particular application. The microstructure of the film influences the electronic properties which in turn influences the performance of the film. Ba(0.6)Sr(0.4)Ti(1-y)(A(3+), B(5+))(y)O3 thin films, of nominal thickness of 0.65 micrometer, were synthesized initially at substrate temperatures of 400 deg C, and subsequently annealed to 750 deg C, on LaAlO3 (100) substrates, previously coated with LaSrCoO conductive buffer layer, using the pulsed laser deposition technique. The microstructural and physical characteristics of the post-annealed thin films have been studied using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and nano indentation and are reported. Results of capacitance measurements are used to obtain dielectric constant and tunability in the paraelectric (T>Tc) regime.

Book Epitaxial Oxide Thin Films II Volume 401

Download or read book Epitaxial Oxide Thin Films II Volume 401 written by James S. Speck and published by . This book was released on 1996-03-29 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding and control of epitaxial oxide heterostructures has progressed along multiple frontiers including magnetic, dielectric, ferroelectric, and superconducting oxide materials. This has resulted in both independent rediscovery and the successful borrowing of ideas from ceramic science, solid-state physics, and semiconductor epitaxy. A new field of materials science has emerged which aims at the use of the intrinsic properties of various oxide materials in single-crystal thin-film form. Exploiting the potential of these materials, however, will only be possible if many fundamental and engineering questions can be answered. This book represents continued progress toward fulfilling that promise. Technical information on epitaxial oxide thin films from industry, academia and government laboratories is presented. Topics include: dielectrics; ferroelectrics; optics; superconductors; magnetics; magnetoresistance.
