Book The Liberal Model and Africa

Download or read book The Liberal Model and Africa written by K. Good and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-12-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines the realities of liberal democracy; its elitism and non-accountability; and its inequalities and injustices. Participatory systems and movements, whether in Athens, seventeenth and nineteenth century England, or South Africa 1970-1990, are more effective in satisfying the democratic aspirations of the people and in curtailing ambitious elites, than what is passed off now as 'democracy'. By interrogating contemporary democratic regimes, in the United States, and in Botswana and South Africa, the severe limitations and constraints inherent in liberal democracy are highlighted. The need for a clear evaluation of what constituted democracy emerges as a powerful message of Kenneth Good's argument.

Book Poverty Alleviation in Tanzania

Download or read book Poverty Alleviation in Tanzania written by Mboya S. D. Bagachwa and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty and destitution continue to be pervasive in development. Recent surveys have revealed that in Tanzania, over fifty percent of the population still live in poverty and about one-tenth of the households are severely undernourished. In response to the world-wide growing concerns about poverty and since sustainable poverty reduction continues to be one of Tanzania's major development goals, a long term research programme in Tanzania is proposed. A workshop, as a first step, was held in 1994, intended to establish consensus over the selected theme and sub-themes and to discuss and establish a broad-based but focused research agenda. The seven papers from the workshop form this book.

It is a tribute to the life and work of two individuals that each made a unique contribution to social justice, law and its development. As evidenced by the Tributes and Lists of Publications contained herein, both Edwell and Nyenti (as they were colloquially known) were productive scholars but they leave a legacy that extends beyond the academic realm to that of friendship and shared humanity.

Book Gender Equity and Access to Economic Opportunities in Agriculture in Botswana

Download or read book Gender Equity and Access to Economic Opportunities in Agriculture in Botswana written by Botswana. Ministry of Agriculture. Division of Planning and Statistics and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a report of a study commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Division of Planning and Statistics (DAPS) in the wake of the Fourth UN Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995. The objective of the study was to consider the extent to which women are disadvantaged in the agricultural economy and the appropriate role for government in reducing any disparities. One of the statistical evidence the study presents suggests that, while on average women farm less land than men, they compensate for their relative lack of access to land by higher productivity. Secondly, although older women own less livestock than men, younger women farmers own as many cattle as male farmers of the same age. The report presents a profile of the role of women in agriculture faced by women. Discusses the role for government in alleviating gender imbalances in agriculture. Also presents the recommendations of the study and proposed plan of action.
