It was established that the stress-induced birefringence in Al and steel varies linearly with the magnitude of an applied stress and does not change appreciably as these metals are deformed plastically. Other sources of birefringence were studied also. Preferred orientation is a major source especially in rolled metal stock. A pulse echo technique for observing shear wave birefringence is described and the current limitations are discussed. (Author).

The effect is explained on the basis of nonliner elasticity theory. Experiments indicate that dislocation activity does not strongly affect results in polycrystalline specimens, however a pronounced influence may be observed in single crystals. Nonlinear elasticity theory was used to investigate the interaction of two intersecting, plane, elastic waves in a homogeneous, isotropic medium. A criterion for the occurrence of a strong scattered wave was derived and as formulated as a relationship between the second order elastic constants of the material, and the angle between the intersecting wave vectors and the ratio of primary wave frequencies.

Book excerpt: Residual stresses are always introduced in materials when they are produced, or when they undergo non-uniform plastic deformation during use. The circumstances that can cause residual stresses are therefore numerous. Residual stresses exist in all materials and, depending on their distribution, can playa beneficial role (for example, compressive surface stress) or have a catastrophic effect, especially on fatigue behaviour and corrosion properties. The subject of residual stresses took form around 1970 with the development of methods to measure macroscopic deformations during the machining of materials or on an atomic scale by X-ray diffraction. These techniques have made considerable progress in the last 20 years. The meetings organized in several countries (Germany, France, Japan, etc. ) have largely contributed to this progress, aided by the numerous exchanges of information and knowledge to which they have given rise. Studies of the formation of residual stresses began more slowly, but have progressed with the emergence of increasingly realistic models of materials behaviour and with access to ever more powerful codes for numerical calculations. Two successive meetings for discussing this topic have been held in Europe. The first, held in 1982 in Nancy (France), consisted of 30 participants from 5 countries. The second was held in Linkoping (Sweden) in 1984, with 80 participants of 16 nationalities. It was decided to hold a first International Conference, ICRS, to address all aspects of the problem. Held in 1986 in Garmisch-Partenkirschen (FRG), it was an assembly of neady 300 participants from 21 countries.

First of all it depends on the properties of the chosen materials as well as on several other parameters, e.g. temperature, corrosivity of the environment, elapsed or remaining serviceable life, unexpected deterioration of materials, whatever the source and nature of such deterioration may be: defects, loss of strength, embrittlement, wastage, etc. DEFECTS and PROPERTIES of materials currently determine loadability. Therefore in addition to nondestructive testing for defects there is also a need for nondestructive testing of properties. The third type of information to be supplied by nondestructive measurement pertains to STRESS STATES under OPERATIONAL LOADS, i.e. LOAD-INDUCED plus RESIDUAL STRESSES. Residual stresses normally cannot be calculated; they have to be measured nondestructively; well-approved elastomechanical finite element codes are available and used for calculating load-induced stresses; for redundancy and reliability, engineers, however, need procedures and instrumentation for experimental checks.

Results previously obtained on aluminum, copper and steel have shown that this method offers a promising possibility for measurements of bulk stresses in these materials. The results also indicate that the method is less sensitive to variations caused by alloy composition and perhaps texture. Two objectives have been set for the research to be performed during the first year of this program. The first objective is to establish experimental relationships between the temperature dependence of ultrasonic velocity and stress applied in a direction parallel to and perpendicular to that of wave propagation. These relationships are to represent the variations of the temperature dependence when the stresses are applied in tension as well as in compression.

A review and evaluation has recently been published that describes the essence of the principles of nearly all the applied and proposed methods for nondestructive and semidestructive residual stress measurement. This review is summarized herein.
