Biskamp focuses on the various reconnection mechanisms dominating magnetic processes under the different plasma conditions encountered in astrophysical systems and in laboratory fusion devices. The book consists of two major parts: the first deals with the classical resistive approach, while the second presents an overview of weakly collisional or collisionless plasmas. Applications primarily concern astrophysical phenomena and dynamo theory, with emphasis on the solar and geodynamo, as well as magnetospheric substorms--the most spectacular reconnection events in the magnetospheric plasma. The theoretical procedures and results also apply directly to reconnection processes in laboratory plasmas, in particular the sawtooth phenomenon in tokamaks. The book will be of value to graduate students and researchers interested in magnetic processes both in astrophysical and laboratory plasma physics.

Book excerpt: The study of the collisionless magnetic reconnection constituted the primary work carried out under this grant. The investigations utilized two magnetic configurations with distinct boundary conditions. Both configurations were based upon the Versatile Toroidal Facility (VTF) at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center and the MIT Physics Department. The NSF/DOE award No. 0613734, supported two graduate students (now Drs. W. Fox and N. Katz) and material expenses. The grant enabled these students to operate the VTF basic plasma physics experiment on magnetic reconnection. The first configuration was characterized by open boundary conditions where the magnetic field lines interface directly with the vacuum vessel walls. The reconnection dynamics for this configuration has been methodically characterized and it has been shown that kinetic effects related to trapped electron trajectories are responsible for the high rates of reconnection observed. This type of reconnection has not been investigated before. Nevertheless, the results are directly relevant to observations by the Wind spacecraft of fast reconnection deep in the Earth magnetotail. The second configuration was developed to be relevant to specifically to numerical simulations of magnetic reconnection, allowing the magnetic field-lines to be contained inside the device. The configuration is compatible with the presence of large current sheets in the reconnection region and reconnection is observed in fast powerful bursts. These reconnection events facilitate the first experimental investigations of the physics governing the spontaneous onset of fast reconnection. In the Report we review the general motivation of this work and provide an overview of our experimental and theoretical results enabled by the support through the awards.

The quadrupole field, a signature of two-fluid reconnection at zero guide field, is significantly altered by a finite guide field. It is shown that the reconnection rate is significantly reduced with increasing guide field, and this dependence is explained by a combination of local and global physics: locally, the in-plane Hall currents are reduced, while globally guide field compression produces an increased pressure both within and downstream of the reconnection region. __________________________________________________

Book excerpt: The magnetic reconnection process is studied in a wide range of operating conditions in the well-controlled Magnetic Reconnection Experiment. The reconnection rate is observed to be a function of both global (i.e., system size) and local (collisionality) plasma parameters. When only local collisionality is lowered, the current sheet is shortened while effective resistivity is enhanced, both accelerating reconnection rates. At a fixed collisionality, the current sheet length increases with system size, resulting in the reduction of the reconnection rate. These results quantitatively agree with a generalized Sweet-Parker analysis.

Book excerpt: A new experiment for studying magnetic reconnection, the process in a magnetized plasma which allows for the magnetic topology to change rapidly, has been constructed and is currently in operation. Magnetic reconnection is of great interest because while it occurs in localized regions, it influences the macroscopic behavior of many plasmas systems including space and astrophysical plasmas as well as laboratory experiments. An emerging frontier of reconnection research has been the study of collisionless magnetic reconnection in Earth's magnetosphere. Extensive studies in theory, simulation, and spacecraft observations have been successful in developing our understanding of these systems while there are few laboratory experiments capable of exploring similar parameters. The Terrestrial Reconnection Experiment (TREX) marks the first experiment dedicated to the study of these kinetic effects in low collisional plasmas. In operation at the Wisconsin Plasma Physics Laboratory (WiPPL), TREX has undergone multiple hardware upgrades in order to access new regimes of reconnection. The experiment consists of a large spherical vacuum vessel housing internal reconnection drive coils that force magnetic reconnection with a background plasma. This generates a strong toroidal current layer near the coils that is driven inward to the central axis as reconnection proceeds. An extensive suite of magnetic and electrostatic diagnostics allow for fine measurement of the local and global dynamics of the system. Two important results are reported in this thesis. The first is the direct observation of the spontaneous formation of plasmoids, or magnetic islands, which occur at the electron scale inside the ion diffusion region. The experiments show that the plasmoid instability, a fundamental ingredient in models for electron energization and increased reconnection dynamics, is active at a smaller system size than predicted by theory. The second investigation examines the dynamics of strongly driven magnetic reconnection in which a shock interface between the supersonically driven plasma inflow and a region of magnetic flux pileup develops. The observations elucidate the role of shock formation in permitting the normalized reconnection rate to self regulate to a fixed value.

After a brief review of the well-known early work, we discuss representative recent experimental and theoretical work and attempt to interpret the essence of significant modern findings. In the area of local reconnection physics, many significant findings have been made with regard to two- uid physics and are related to the cause of fast reconnection. Profiles of the neutral sheet, Hall currents, and the effects of guide field, collisions, and micro-turbulence are discussed to understand the fundamental processes in a local reconnection layer both in space and laboratory plasmas. While the understanding of the global reconnection dynamics is less developed, notable findings have been made on this issue through detailed documentation of magnetic self-organization phenomena in fusion plasmas. Application of magnetic reconnection physics to astrophysical plasmas is also brie y discussed.
