Book excerpt: The process e[sup +]e[sup -] --> [pi][sup +][pi][sup -][pi][sup 0][gamma] has been studied at a center-of-mass energy near the [Upsilon](4S) resonance using a 89.3 fb[sup -1] data sample collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider. From the measured 3[pi] mass spectrum the authors have obtained the products of branching fractions for the [omega] and [phi] mesons, B([omega] --> e[sup +]e[sup -])B([omega] --> 3[pi]) = (6.70 [+-] 0.06 [+-] 0.27) x 10[sup -5] and B([phi] --> e[sup +]e[sup -])B([phi] --> 3[pi]) = (4.30 [+-] 0.08 [+-] 0.21) x 10[sup -5], and evaluated the e[sup +]e[sup -] --> [pi][sup +][pi][sup -][pi][sup 0] cross section for the e[sup +]e[sup -] center-of-mass energy range 1.05 to 3.00 GeV. About 900 e[sup +]e[sup -] --> J/[psi][gamma] --> [pi][sup +][pi][sup -][pi][sup 0] events have been selected and the branching fraction B(J/[psi] --> [pi][sup +][pi][sup -][pi][sup 0]) = (2.18 [+-] 0.19)% has been measured.

About 20,000, 33,000 and 4,000 fully reconstructed events, respectively, have been selected from 232 fb{sup -1} of BABAR data. The invariant mass of the hadronic final state defines the effective e{sup +}e{sup -} center-of-mass energy, so that these data can be compared with the corresponding direct e{sup +}e{sup -} measurements. From the 3({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}), 2({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}) and K{sup +}K{sup -} 2({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) mass spectra, the cross sections for the processes e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} 3({pi}{sup +}{sup -}), e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} 2({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}) and e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -} 2({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) are measured for center-of-mass energies from production threshold to 4.5 GeV. The uncertainty in the cross section measurement is typically 6-15%. We observe the J/{psi} in all these final states and measure the corresponding branching fractions.

Book excerpt: A new state with invariant mass near 2.32 GeV=c[sup 2] has been observed by the BABAR Collaboration in the inclusive D[sub s][sup +] [pi][sup 0] mass distribution using 91 fb[sup -1] of e[sup +]e[sup -] annihilation data taken at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy storage ring at energies near 10.6 GeV. The new state is narrow, with an observed width that is consistent with the experimental resolution. This narrow width combined with the quantum numbers of the final state imply that the decay is isospin-violating. The state has natural spin-parity, and its low mass suggests a J[sup P] = 0[sup +] assignment.

Book excerpt: The analyzing powers A{sub y} differential cross sections d?/d? for the reaction 13C(?,?°)13N have been measured for forward scattering angles at an incident pion kinetic energy of T{sub pi}+ = 163 MeV by using a transversely polarized target. Analyzing powers and reaction cross sections impose stringent constrains on nuclear reaction models and can be used to test the present understanding of nuclear structure for 1p-shell nuclei. The resulting A{sub y} are compared to the predictions of first-order Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation (DWIA) calculations, which reproduce well the differential cross sections. Although there is qualitative agreement at forward angles, the quantitative agreement is poor, especially at scattering angles larger than 50°. Since the DWIA calculations do not appear to be strongly sensitive to the assumed nuclear structure model, the discrepancy in describing the analyzing powers suggests that the reaction mechanism may not yet be well understood and higher order corrections may be important. Also measured were the analyzing powers for the elementary charge exchange reaction?− {bar p} →?°n over the same angular range and at an incident pion kinetic energy of T{sub pi}- = 161 MeV. The results are compared to the most recents phase shift predictions. Within the experimental uncertainties, phase shift calculations agree with the measured A{sub y} and no changes in the?N phase shifts near the P33 resonance are needed to describe the data.
