Book A Guide to Classics and Cognitive Studies

Download or read book A Guide to Classics and Cognitive Studies written by Anna A. Novokhatko and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-12-02 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers of this book receive an overview of the main perspectives and research of recent decades in the fruitful collaboration between Classics and Cognitive studies. It is intended as a stocktaking of various branches of Classics, such as literary criticism and poetics, linguistics, ancient history and archaeology. Four major research areas or clusters have been chosen for the presentation of the chapters. Chapter one discusses recent studies of 'cognitive' materiality and material agency in relation to the human mind, chapter two the so-called 'spatial turn' and cognition and the perception of space in place in relation to antiquity, chapter three imagination and vision and cognitive approaches to seeing, while chapter four considers experience and experientiality and the 'sensory turn' as applied to ancient sources. Finally, the fifth chapter is a special case and a different medium: it consists of three interviews with three well-known pioneers of the study of emotions in antiquity, David Konstan, Angelos Chaniotis and Douglas Cairns, who in various direct and indirect ways have greatly influenced the interplay and dialogue between classical studies and cognitive approaches in recent decades. This book takes stock of a rapidly developing and highly controversial field that is currently in full bloom.

Book Alma Parens Originalis

Download or read book Alma Parens Originalis written by John L. Hilton and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original collection of articles, derived in part from the papers presented at the twenty-sixth biennial conference of the Classical Association of South Africa held at Durban and Pietermaritzburg 5-7 July 2005, explores a wide range of receptions of Classical ideas in the fiction, drama, poetry, history, opera, and popular culture of a number of countries from South Africa to Cuba. There is a strong emphasis on the use of Greek and Roman tragedy, especially Aeschylus Seven against Thebes, the Electra plays of Sophocles and Euripides, various reworkings of the figures of Antigone and Medea, and the dramatic style of Seneca, but the compendium also includes chapters on Platonism, Horatian Satire, Mythology, Roman Civilization, Roman Historiography, and Greek erotic spells. Chronologically, the scope of reception extends from the contemporary (the problem of HIV/AIDS in South Africa), to the twentieth century (Soyinka, Walcott, Forster, Seth, Campbell), and the Renaissance (Daniel Heinsius). The book illustrates the depth, diversity, and complexity of the interconnections between the Classical past and the present. It provides a refreshingly different perspective on a vitally important and vibrant field of research.

Book Latin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Françoise Waquet
  • Publisher : Verso Books
  • Release : 2023-02-07
  • ISBN : 1789608279
  • Pages : 552 pages

Download or read book Latin written by Françoise Waquet and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2023-02-07 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though not without its rivals, Latin stood at the apex of Western culture from the Renaissance until relatively recently. Franoise Waquet offers an enthralling, original history of the language's uses, its detractors and defenders, and the social hierarchies its practitioners inscribed. Granted a new lease of life by the Humanists and the Catholic Church, Latin was the form in which generations of schoolchildren were taught to read, millions of people worshipped, and an international community of scholars communicated with one another. It conveyed sacredness, but also obscenity; learning, as well as pedantry; science, but also trickery and mumbo-jumbo. Few individuals even among the clergy or the most learned scholars have ever managed to speak it with any degree of correctness or fluency, let alone elegance. Why, despite rationalist criticisms that Latin was inaccessible to the great majority of people, and inconvenient and time-consuming for the rest, did it maintain such a strong presence - some would say a tyranny - for so long?

Book Progressive Pioneer

Download or read book Progressive Pioneer written by William G. Wraga and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander James Inglis's (1879-1924) transformation from an academic traditionalist devoted to Latin pedagogy to an influential progressive-experimentalist and advocate of the comprehensive high school has received insufficient attention from educational and curriculum historians. Inglis's career manifests important characteristics of the progressive era in American history. As an attempt to generate organizing principles upon which to construct a new, responsive social institution, his book, Principles of Secondary Education, stands as a quintessential manifestation of progressive values. This fine-grained profile of Inglis's work reveals nuances in the historic record that are otherwise obscured by high-level historical interpretations. An assessment of the utility of these interpretations for explaining Inglis's career leads to a discussion of the implications of the record of Inglis's work for understanding the progressive period and its prevailing interpretations, as well as to a consideration of the role of biography in historical research.
