Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: A circuit for generating high-power, high-voltage pulse trains is described that uses silicon controlled rectifiers for high-current, low-voltage power switching, and inductors and transformers having saturable-magnetic cores for high-voltage, high-speed switching. Figures of merit for saturable-inductor switches and a measure of power-switching capacity for controlled rectifiers are determined which provide a characterization of these devices that is especially useful for design purposes. A step-by-step circuit-design procedure is presented that is flexible enough so that selected performance attributes (such as smallest size and weight, or highest efficiency) can be emphasized by the designer. A laboratory breadboard semiconductor-magnetic pulse generator producing 1700 average watts in 1.6-microsecond pulses of over 1 megawatt peak power is described as an illustration of the circuit technique. Book excerpt: This report describes work performed to develop a set of high voltage nanosecond pulse generators. The objective of the development is a set of pulse generators of small volume, low weight, and high efficiency. Testing of the power supply and modualtor for Task A Pulse Generator, operating either single pulse of 15 Hz at a pulsewidth of 125 ns, pulse voltage of 30kV, and pulse current of 1200 amps, has been proceeding. The power supply and modulator were integrated and operated at an intermediate level of 10 kV. The modulator was tested at 30 kV. Preliminary tests on a SCR-magnetic modulator for Task B Pulse Generator, providing a 5 kV, 4 A, 100 ns pulse to the load, were conducted. In addition, a solid state pulse generator providing a 16 kV, 0.5 amp, 6 microsec pulse to a laser load was designed, built and tested.
