Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Prayer changes things." It's a common saying, and too often Christian discussion of prayer deals only with how we can change other things and other people through prayer. But what if prayer is much more than we imagine? What if it is also the means of correcting our relationship to the Creator and at the same time of changing our relationships with one another? Perhaps prayer can ultimately help transform our theology, what we believe about God, into character and action. In Ultimate Allegiance, Dr. Bob Cornwall takes us to the Lord's Prayer, a short and simple prayer that is well-known and often recited. But in each of its major petitions, he finds deep meaning that challenges us to think and to change. In fact, this prayer of Jesus brings us to the ultimate question of just where we should place our ultimate allegiance. This book can be read individually but is designed especially for small group or church studies, especially in conjunction with the related study guide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastor Shauna Hyde brings her experience in, not only ministering to the homeless, but becoming such a welcome part of their world, that she is known as "The Vicar of Tent Town." I struggle to be accepting and understanding when organizations refuse to work together because an issue is more important than people. I become angry, distressed, and depressed when churches cannot put differences aside in order to transform the loves of those who are desperate to feel the touch of God. I can say that I have had upscale dinners with the wealthy and split a sandwich under a bridge with the not so wealthy. I can say I have had lunch with movie stars and I have rocked a homeless man to sleep. I have been at both ends of the spectrum and have seen the beauty that makes up humanity. Just when I think I am done and cannot love anymore because I am tired of the games people play and the silly things they get upset about, someone will show me the beauty of their souls – the place where God is and I know I can still love and show grace. -- Shauna Hyde

When a loved one, especially a child, dies through suicide, the tasks involved in that journey require a different perspective. Ronald Higdon shares with us his experience in Surviving A Son's Suicide. With loving but unapologetic candor, Pastor Higdon shares the questions and thoughts that often will continuously circle in our minds. He brings notes, book resources and inspired ways of helping from people who were supportive. If you are looking for something that makes it possible to avoid the three great words in life and faith - mystery, paradox, and ambiguity - then this book is not for you. If you have lost a family member through suicide or are seeking ways to be a comfort to those who have and are searching for a painless and less confusing way to do it, you will not be disappointed in what you find in these pages. As the author notes, "The title for this book is in the present tense: Surviving a Son's Suicide. This continues to be a work in progress. This is not a book about triumph or resolution or "now it's okay." It's not okay; it never will be okay. Our pain and our questions remain but Pat and I are surviving in the sense that we are attempting to go forward with our lives without Mark's presence. On occasion, there is some degree of tension as we seek to understand how the other is making the extremely personal grief journey." - Ronald Higdon, father While your grief is personal, this book includes 15 helpful things others did for Ron and his family, and their written responses to what we received along with a summary list of 31 items of what we found to be helpful survival strategies. This book is suitable for individual reading, but will also make an excellent book for a study or support group.

In such times a person feels as if God has left him or her alone and God has distanced himself from the individual in this period of liminality. It is considered to be a time of trial and testing which only afterwards is viewed as a period of growth and maturing in Christ. In this book, Daniel McGregor explores the Biblical foundation for this concept, as well as providing a historical survey of Christian theologians and authors who examine these themes and experiences. This volume will provide an ideal introduction to the subject for the serious layperson or a suitable reading for an introductory class in religious studies.

Book Wounded by Truth Healed by Love

Download or read book Wounded by Truth Healed by Love written by David R Cartwright and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speak. Don't speak. Proclaim your faith. A private faith. Be wise as serpents. Be innocent as doves. Yes, Jesus' teachings can often be seen as an excellent example of a paradox. Author David Cartwright shares his life long study of the gospels from elementary school through seminary and as a pastor. ... the question, "What would Jesus do?" goes back to a more basic one, "What did Jesus mean?" And that question further back to an even more basic one, "What did Jesus say?" What I can claim to have discerned from all this discussion is that it has made me dive deeper into my study of the New Testament, and at the same time gain a deeper appreciation for the variety and diversity of its authors. With that said, as primarily a "Sunday-in and Sunday-out" preacher, I have an ongoing commitment to the Canon as it has been preserved and transmitted to us. While there may be many different sounding teachings, there is finally only one Jesus who said them. - David Cartwright

Book Holidays Holy Days and Special Days

Download or read book Holidays Holy Days and Special Days written by William Powell Tuck and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2015-11-13 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s a preacher to do with holidays? Some seem to almost preach themselves, especially those in the church calendar. Others are more secular or may seem to conflict with the church calendar. Some are even controversial and require a gentle, but firm touch of the preacher’s art. William Powell Tuck is a master preacher and in this book he demonstrates his sensitivity to the issues raised by some of the holidays and special days of the year along with his grounding in biblical studies, theology, and homiletics. You can read these sermons as essays if you want, but they are not light devotionals. They are serious efforts to grapple honestly with issues and to guide a church community in learning and growing as they celebrate their lives, their families, and their communities. For the preacher, these sermons can serve as models for how to approach these days, as well as providing insight into the various issues involved.

Book Unfettered Spirit

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert D. Cornwall
  • Publisher : Energion Publications
  • Release : 2013-06-21
  • ISBN : 193843496X
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book Unfettered Spirit written by Robert D. Cornwall and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2013-06-21 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All too frequently studies of the gifts of the Spirit consist largely of answering two questions: "What are the gifts?" and "Which ones do I have?" In many cases studies go on to a third question: "How can I get more?" In response, institutional churches and theologically and intellectually respectable Christians often tend to avoid the work of the Holy Spirit in the church entirely. It's much easier to simply close the doors and windows than it is to deal with the wind (John 3:8). After all, they've seen the wind blow out the candles, disarrange the altar vestments, and send a chill through the congregants. Author, pastor, and church historian Bob Cornwall has experienced all of this for himself. He has seen traditional churches and worship. He has seen Pentecostal worship. He has led congregations in difficult times. For more than 30 years, he has studied, practiced, prayed, and lived the work of the Holy Spirit in the church. The result is Unfettered Spirit: Spiritual Gifts for the New Great Awakening. Here he avoids both the errors of replacing the freedom of the Spirit with human whim and of trying to tame or confine the Spirit that will not be fettered. He asks: "Do you truly believe that God is present in the world? And, do you believe that God is working through us to break down the walls that divide us from God, from each other, and from the world? And if you do, do you believe that you have been gifted and empowered to participate in this ministry that takes down the walls of egoism, suspicion, greed, self-interest, and hatred?" If you can say "yes" to these questions, jump right in. This is the book for you. If you are hesitant, or if the idea of the Holy Spirit working unfettered in your congregation and community frightens you, read the first four chapters carefully as Bob lays the theological foundation. You may find your "maybe" or even your "no" turned into a "yes." Building on this foundation, Bob continues with five chapters on the gifts of the Spirit as described in Scripture. These are practical discussions that will let you keep your bearings in discussions of the Spirit and, more importantly, in a community where the Spirit is active. Finally, he concludes with a discussion of how to lead and pastor a church where the gifts of the Spirit are active. Whether you are a Pentecostal, an evangelical, a mainliner, a progressive, or any other label you might find for yourself or your church, you will profit from reading this book.

Book Where Is Your Allegiance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul A Himes
  • Publisher : Energion Publications
  • Release : 2017-08-28
  • ISBN : 1631996037
  • Pages : 153 pages

Download or read book Where Is Your Allegiance written by Paul A Himes and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lay persons in the church might be forgiven for imagining that the book of Revelation cannot be understood. There are many different interpretive schemes proposed, and hundreds of variations within those schemes. But the reader who is willing to spend the time will find real treasures in the study of this book, and Paul Himes has provided an excellent guide to some of the most important passages, as he looks at the messages to the seven churches, and even more importantly at the One who is sending those messages, based on the vision in the first chapter and the ways in which the churches are addressed. Dr. Himes provides key background information and then takes a serious look at the details of the text, but he does so in a way that is clear and that points the reader to ways of approaching the text more seriously on his or her own. For those who want to follow the trail further, the footnotes are extensive. Since, as the author tells us on page 5, “... one cannot begin to grapple with the eschatology of Revelation until one has submitted to the Christology of Revelation” this book provides an excellent point of entry for someone who wants to take a new and refreshing look at this important book. Here one can study the Christ of revelation (Christology), the church He ordained (ecclesiology), and go from there to the purpose and destination He has for that church (eschatology).

Book Creation in Contemporary Experience

Download or read book Creation in Contemporary Experience written by David Moffett-Moore and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do the things we believe about God as creator make any difference in the way we act in the world? Yes, what we believe about God as creator impacts our theology and action in many ways. In this book, Dr. David Moffett-Moore will examine some of these implications by looking at topics as diverse as quantum physics and chaos theory, hermeneutics, ethics, and how we tell stories of faith. Can one accept the major theories of science, including evolution and still be a faithful believer? What do these findings of science mean for the way we do theology in the 21st century? Dr. Moffett-Moore not only believes that we can accept the findings of science and still be faithful Christians, he believes that discoveries in fields such as physics and biology can help us talk about God in a more relevant and compelling way than we ever have before. When we talk about God in this new way, we will also find a new call to live in a way that is faithful both to the wonders of the physical Creation, and also to scripture. This study is designed for individual reading and study. Though it does not include questions and other traditional elements of a study guide, it would still be an excellent guide for small group study on these topics.

Book Meditations on According to John

Download or read book Meditations on According to John written by Herold Weiss and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gospel of John, titled simply "According to John" in ancient manuscripts, contains some of the simplest language in the New Testament. The Greek of this book is so simple that it is often used in teaching beginning students to read New Testament Greek. Pastors and teachers often recommend the book as a good starting point for new Chrustians reading the Bible for the first time. But the simple vocabulary and structure belies an extraordinary spiritual depth. While there are lessons to be learned from an initial surface reading, diligent seekers will find incredible depths. Understanding these deeper lessons requires one to see the book as a whole and understand the intricate pattern of connections between the various parts. Verse by verse and even passage by passage study can be misleading. New Testament scholar Herold Weiss spent a considerable amount of time searching for the best way to open up the treasures of this gospel to non-scholars and settled on a series of meditations on various phrases or events related in the book. In each meditation he ties the specific theme to related passages and imagery throughout the gospel. His masterful presentation will open your eyes and mind to new insights into the fourth gospel, early Christianity, and its application to 21st century Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I turned the corner. The aisle stretched before me as the music escalated. My white slippers brushed over the red roses. My heart thumped. I had waited so long for this moment. Had I really made it this far? Hundreds of eyes twinkled their approval. But did they really think I was crazy? I could almost hear the question I had been asked before, 'Do you think it will be worth the wait?' Here I was at this pinnacle moment. My first kiss." These are the lessons of a young woman's life. It may seem an unusual narrative as she saved her heart for love and grew up knowing that being "different" was a gift. From her childhood years in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to the stark poverty and tremendous courage and faith of the Ethiopians, this is a riveting and inspiring story of God's sovereignty and faithfulness.
