Book 50 Years of Community Development Vol II

Download or read book 50 Years of Community Development Vol II written by Norman Walzer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 50th anniversary publication provides a comprehensive history of community development. Beginning in 1970 with the advent of the Community Development Society and its journal shortly thereafter, Community Development, the editors have placed the chapters in major themed areas or issues pertinent to both research and practice of community development. The evolution of community development as an area of scholarship and application, and the subsequent founding of the discipline, is vital to capture. At the 50-year mark, it is particularly relevant to revisit issues that reoccur throughout the last five decades and look at approaches to addressing them. These include issues and themes around equity and inclusion, collective impact, leadership and policy development, as well as resilience and sustainability. Community change over time has much to teach us, and this set will provide a foundation for fostering understanding of the history of community development and its focus on community change. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Community Development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community Development for Social Change provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of community development and associated activities, discusses best practice from global experience and links that to the UK context. The book integrates the realities of practice to key underpinning theories, human rights, values and a commitment to promoting social justice. A range of practice models are described and analysed, including UK models, popular education and community organising, as well as a range of practice issues that need to be understood by community development workers. For example, strategies to promote individual and community empowerment, challenging discrimination, building and sustaining groups, and critical reflection on practice. Finally, a range of case studies from the UK and overseas illustrates good practice in diverse contexts. These case studies are analysed with reference to the values of community development, the promotion of social justice and the underpinning theories. It is an essential text for those on community development courses as well as for a range of workers, including local government, national and local voluntary agencies, and community-based organisations.

Download or read book Group Work written by Nano McCaughan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-11-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Group work is central to social work, whether it be work with individuals and families, residential care, community work, management or social work education. Despite, however, the upsurge of interest in this aspect of social work method at the time Group Work: Learning and Practice, originally published in 1978, represented the first attempt at providing an up-to-date and carefully integrated source book for students – in the form of a series of mainly original and British papers on social group work: its knowledge base; the possible varieties of practice settings and objectives; and its implications for social work education and training models. For new directions in social work education suggested that the small group was to become the core system around which much future social work teaching would be based. The main concern of this new National Institute for Social Work reader – the development and demonstration of intervention skills in practice – would be particularly relevant. The book draws attention to the opportunities for work with groups in the community, in residential institutions and with families, where the emphasis was rapidly shifting towards the need for greater understanding and use of the small group dimension. Group Work: Learning and Practice would have been widely welcomed both by specialists in group work at the time and all those more generally interested in social work methods – as teachers, students, practitioners, supervisors and as local authority training officers. It would also be of interest to a wider readership of teachers, youth workers and those concerned with the group dynamics and counselling fields.

Book Community and the World

Download or read book Community and the World written by Torry D. Dickinson and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles and artwork examines inclusive community development education, which engages members of diverse, often marginalised groups in research and education for social change. Community development education is the democratic and scholarly practice of involving everyday people, from all backgrounds, in the research-based process of designing, starting, and evaluating programs that meet people's needs. The book's varied contributions serve as personalised invitations to: work with others as equals, join democratic social projects, talk to people "you wouldn't have talked to before", value self-education, recognise contributions made by unpaid workers, invent ways to be non-violent, challenge passivity, and use democracy as a way to improve communities and the world. Addressing culture to science, chapters contain work carried out by younger and older scholarly activists in: Women's Studies, anti-racist and anti-colonial studies, history, the social sciences, global studies, community studies, media studies, horticulture, philosophy, education, co-operatives and community service, social-movement organising, project development, political art, and popular music. Each chapter contains diverse themes, comes from multidisciplinary research, and speaks to the subject of education for social change in individual ways. Contributions focus on popular education, self-education, self-defined group education, group-defined university projects, and scholarly activism in local to global movements.
