Download or read book The Love Commandment in Mark written by George Keerankeri and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research work investigates the problem whether the texts of the love commandment (cf. Mk 12,28-34), which are quotations of Deut 6,4-5 and Lev 19,18, have their original OT meaning in the gospel of Mark or whether they acquire, besides this, a specific Markan enrichment. The study not only affirms such a specificity but also demonstrates its richness and depth. It establishes that the distinctiveness of the Markan conception of the love commandment is closely linked to the person of Jesus and is expressed in a multiplicity of data, both formal and thematic, which can be discovered in an integral reading of the gospel. The methodology employed is modem redaction-criticism which differs from classical Redaction-criticism in that it is synchronic and takes the text as it stands as a coherent and wholistic document to be understood in terms of itself and thus studies it in an integral reading. The investigation has two parts, involving four chapters and a general conclusion. Part I, comprising Ch I and Ch II, dwells on the OT meaning and context of the texts of the love commandment and provides a lucid account of them which serves as the basis for its study in the gospel. Part II researches the commandment in Mk in two chapters. Of these Ch III represents the gospel's theoretical interpretation of the commandment and Ch IV Jesus' fulfillment of it in the Passion, his instruction by example. Together, they complete Mark's total interpretation of the love comandment. Following this, the general conclusion sees the Markan specificities in a unifying theological vision defined by the gospel's Christology and closes by drawing its consequences. George Keerankeri was born on 10 December 1944 at Kothanalloor in Kerala, India. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1962 and was ordained a priest in 1974. He holds an M.A. in Social-Cultural Anthropology and completed his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (LSS) at the Pontifical Biblical institute, Rome in 1979. Ever since he is a lecturer of the New Testament at Vidyajyoti College of Theology, the Jesuit Faculty of Theology in Delhi, India.
Download or read book The Gospel according to Mark written by Camille Focant and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-07-06 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world to which the Gospel of Mark introduces its reader is a world of conflicts and suspense, enigmas and secrets, questions and overturning of evidence, irony and surprise. Its principal actor, Jesus, is perplexing in the extreme. He is evidently so for the religious authorities who oppose him, but also for his disciples, who shift from incomprehension to opposition and flight. Questions of meaning, life and death, good and evil are continually broached. This narrative is a subtle invitation to enter into a new world, that of the coming Reign of God, in which the first are last and whoever wants to save his life must lose it. This commentary on the Gospel of Mark has been enthusiastically reviewed in the French edition as one of the best current commentaries on Mark. As a narrative critical commentary, it favors an interpretation of the Gospel that tries to grasp the dynamic of the text taken as a whole. Even if the technical vocabulary of narrative analysis is not used, and the main results of the historical-critical criticism, particularly those of redaction criticism, are not neglected, as the notes will reveal, it is narrative criticism that guides the proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first chapters of literary works are indispensable to understanding them. This is also true of the Gospels. Francesco Filannino shows that the introductory section of Mark's Gospel (Mark 1:1-15) is an important key to accessing the whole narrative, because it anticipates the main contents of the evangelist's theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few figures from Greco-Roman antiquity have undergone as much reassessment in recent decades as Callimachus of Cyrene, who was active at the Alexandrian court of the Ptolemies during the early third century BC. Once perceived as a supreme example of ivory tower detachment and abstruse learning, Callimachus has now come to be understood as an artificer of the images of a powerful and vibrant court and as a poet second only to Homer in his later reception. For the modern audience, the fragmentation of his texts and the diffusion of source materials has often impeded understanding his poetic achievement. Brill’s Companion to Callimachus has been designed to aid in negotiating this scholarly terrain, especially the process of editing and collecting his fragments, to illuminate his intellectual and social contexts, and to indicate the current directions that his scholarship is taking.

This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Egyptian language, with its written documentation spreading from the Early Bronze Age (Ancient Egyptian) to Christian times (Coptic), has rarely been the object of typological studies, grammatical analysis mainly serving philological purposes. This volume offers now a detailed analysis and a diachronic discussion of the non-verbal patterns of the Egyptian language, from the Pyramid Texts (Earlier Egyptian) to Coptic (Later Egyptian), based on an extensive use of data, especially for later phases. By providing a narrative contextualisation and a linguistic glossing of all examples, it addresses the needs not only of students of Egyptian and Coptic, but also of a linguistic readership. After an introduction into the basic typological features of Egyptian, the main book chapters address morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics of the three non-verbal sentence types documented throughout the history of this language: the adverbial sentence, the nominal sentence and the adjectival sentence. These patterns also appear in a variety of clausal environments and can be embedded in verbal constructions. This book provides an ideal introduction into the study of Egyptian historical grammar and an indispensable companion for philological reading.
