Book Studies in Rheology and Hydrodynamics of Dilute Polymer Solutions

Download or read book Studies in Rheology and Hydrodynamics of Dilute Polymer Solutions written by Michael Poreh and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five studies are presented in this publication: A comparison between the behaviour of polymer solutions and flow characteristics of linear elastico-viscous fluid models. The study shows that no linear model can predict consistently all the observed non-Newtonian phenomena of polymer solutions; Turbulent flow of dilute polymer solutions through an annulus. Experimental and theoretical results are presented; Measurements of the dynamic response of flowing polymer solutions with a vibrating torsional quartz crystal are presented. The dynamic elastico-viscous response is found to be independent of the flow characteristics and shear rates; Drag reduction in developing boundary layers by injection of polymer solutions. Reduction of local friction coefficients is of the order of 65 percent, however, energy losses in the injection region decrease the total drag reduction efficiency. Effect of the injection concentration and discharge, width of slot and mean stream velocity are found; Drag reduction and degradation tests of several polymer solutions are presented. (Author).

Book Modeling and Simulation in Polymers

Download or read book Modeling and Simulation in Polymers written by Purushottam D. Gujrati and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a gap in the literature and all set to become the standard in this field, this monograph begins with a look at computational viscoelastic fluid mechanics and studies of turbulent flows of dilute polymer solutions. It then goes on discuss simulations of nanocomposites, polymerization kinetics, computational approaches for polymers and modeling polyelectrolytes. Further sections deal with tire optimization, irreversible phenomena in polymers, the hydrodynamics of artificial and bacterial flagella as well as modeling and simulation in liquid crystals. The result is invaluable reading for polymer and theoretical chemists, chemists in industry, materials scientists and plastics technologists.

Book Engineering Analysis of Non Newtonian Fluids

Download or read book Engineering Analysis of Non Newtonian Fluids written by Donald Chapman Bogue and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first chapter serves as an introduction which covers the historical perspective and classifies the phenomena. The three following chapters then deal with fundamentals of rheology: rheological properties of fluids; and engineering analysis. (Author).

Book Non Newtonian Turbulence

Download or read book Non Newtonian Turbulence written by Stefano Berti and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a theoretical and numerical study of turbulence in non-Newtonian fluids. The dynamics of these systems can be modelled in terms of transported active fields and constitutes a subject of general interest in complex fluid's physics. Their peculiar rheological properties make them attractive also for engineering applications. The major part of the work concerns turbulence in dilute polymer solutions, i. e. viscoelastic fluids. Two issues are considered : the small-scale statistics at moderate values of elasticity in a fully developed turbulence regime ; the destabilization of a laminar flow by means of purely elastic non linearities. The effect of polymers on small-scale turbulence has been studied in a simplified viscoelastic fluid model, in a homogeneous isotropic configuration. The modifications on the turbulent cascade have been addressed, as well as their consequences on small-scale statistics. In the opposite limit of negligible inertial non linearities, polymeric degrees of freedom can destabilize a flow, when the elasticity of the solution is large enough. At growing elasticity, a transition to chaotic, and turbulent, states is observed. The experimental phenomenology has been numerically reproduced and statistical properties have been characterized. Another item considered is that of binary mixtures. Phase separation between two fluids has been investigated in presence of an externally forced velocity field. The competition between thermodynamic forces and local shears has been examined in both active and passive mixtures and the marginal role of Lagrangian chaos in the phenomenon of coarsening arrest has been highlighted.

Book Rheology of Drag Reducing Fluids

Download or read book Rheology of Drag Reducing Fluids written by Aroon Shenoy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains theoretical derivations and presents expressions for fluid and convective turbulent flow of mildly elastic fluids in various internal and external flow situations involving different types of geometries, such as the smooth/rough circular pipes, annular ducts, curved tubes, vertical flat plates, and channels. Understanding the methodology of the analyses facilitates appreciation for the rationale used for deriving expressions of parameters relevant to the turbulent flow of mildly elastic fluids. This knowledge serves as a driving force for developing new ideas, investigating new situations, and extending theoretical analyses to other unexplored areas of the rheology of mildly elastic drag reducing fluids. The book suits a range of functions--it can be used to teach elective upper-level undergraduate or graduate courses for chemical engineers, material scientists, mechanical engineers, and polymer scientists; guide researchers unexposed to this alluring and interesting area of drag reduction; and serve as a reference to all who want to explore and expand the areas dealt with in this book.

Book Turbulent Flow of Non Newtonian Fluids

Download or read book Turbulent Flow of Non Newtonian Fluids written by E. Reginald Van Driest and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of drag reduction in turbulent flow of solutions of fluids with long-chain molecules (polymers) is studied from the point of view that the effect is due solely to the non-newtonian variation of fluid shearing stress with strain, that is, variation of viscosity with strain. That the viscosity of the solvent is the essential physical property that controls the phenomenon is obtained from the direct effect of temperature. It is also shown that the commencement of turbulent friction reduction is essentially independent of the length of class of polymer, as well as concentration. (Author).
