Book What is Mafia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gaetano Mosca
  • Publisher : M&J Publishing House
  • Release : 2014-08-29
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 82 pages

Download or read book What is Mafia written by Gaetano Mosca and published by M&J Publishing House. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Mafia is the first English translation of the book Cosa è la Mafia by Gaetano Mosca, an Italian political scientist, journalist and public servant. This book is a transcript of a lecture by Gaetano Mosca in Milan in 1900, when he tried to define the essential characteristics of the phenomenon Mafia. These characteristics are the spirit of Mafia, which permeates Sicilian society, the omertà which build up a perfect environment where the Mafia's activities can easily develop, and the ability of the Mafia's cosche to take advantage of their local power linking it to political and financial power. Nowadays, when we discuss about Mafia, it seems that there is an underestimation of this phenomenon, in addition to political and cultural limits to the approach to this problem. All problems that more than one hundred years ago Mosca already noticed and to which tried to give an answer. For this reason, we believe that the translation and the publication of a book already older than one hundred years, will help us take advantage of a witness who tells us about a world far away in time, but close to our interests. The interests of people who are still struggling with the same criminal phenomenon that afflicted Italy at the beginning of the twentieth century. We want to thank Dr. David O'Kane for his contribute to this book and Miss Dela Buhle Gwala, without whose invaluable assistance this book would never have come to light.

Book Beyond Right and Left

Download or read book Beyond Right and Left written by Maurice A. Finocchiaro and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Maurice A. Finocchiaro argues that Gramsci's political theory is a constructive critique of Mosca's and that the key common element is the attempt to combine democracy and elitism in a theoretical system that defines them not as opposite but as compatible and interdependent. Finocchiaro finds that a critical examination of the major works of the two men demonstrates their shared belief in the viability of democratic elitism and undermines the importance of the distinction between right and left."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The New Leviathan Or Man Society Civilization and Barbarism

Download or read book The New Leviathan Or Man Society Civilization and Barbarism written by R.G. Collingwood and published by . This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2014 Reprint of 1942 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. R. G. Collingwood (1889-1943) was a British philosopher and practicing archaeologist best known for his work in aesthetics and the philosophy of history. "The New Leviathan," originally published in 1942, a few months before the author's death, is the book which R. G. Collingwood chose to write in preference to completing his life's work on the philosophy of history. It was a reaction to the Second World War and the threat which Nazism and Fascism constituted to civilization. The book draws upon many years of work in moral and political philosophy and attempts to establish the multiple and complex connections between the levels of consciousness, society, civilization, and barbarism. Collingwood argues that traditional social contract theory has failed to account for the continuing existence of the non-social community and its relation to the social community in the body politic. He is also critical of the tendency within ethics to confound right and duty.

Book Against Political Equality

Download or read book Against Political Equality written by Tongdong Bai and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How a hybrid Confucian-engendered form of governance might solve today’s political problems What might a viable political alternative to liberal democracy look like? In Against Political Equality, Tongdong Bai offers a possibility inspired by Confucian ideas. Bai argues that domestic governance influenced by Confucianism can embrace the liberal aspects of democracy along with the democratic ideas of equal opportunities and governmental accountability to the people. But Confucianism would give more political decision-making power to those with the moral, practical, and intellectual capabilities of caring for the people. While most democratic thinkers still focus on strengthening equality to cure the ills of democracy, the proposed hybrid regime—made up of Confucian-inspired meritocratic characteristics combined with democratic elements and a quasi-liberal system of laws and rights—recognizes that egalitarian qualities sometimes conflict with good governance and the protection of liberties, and defends liberal aspects by restricting democratic ones. Bai applies his views to the international realm by supporting a hierarchical order based on how humane each state is toward its own and other peoples, and on the principle of international interventions whereby humane responsibilities override sovereignty. Exploring the deficiencies posed by many liberal democracies, Against Political Equality presents a novel Confucian-engendered alternative for solving today’s political problems.
