Book Food of Alewives Yellow Perch Spottail Shiners Trout perch and Slimy and Fourhorn Sculpins in Southeastern Lake Michigan

Download or read book Food of Alewives Yellow Perch Spottail Shiners Trout perch and Slimy and Fourhorn Sculpins in Southeastern Lake Michigan written by LaRue Wells and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stomachs of 1,064 alewives, 1,103 yellow perch, 246 spottail shiners, 288 trout-perch, 454 slimy sculpins, and 562 fourhorn sculpins from Lake Michigan were examined for food contents. Fish were sampled primarily from March to November and nearly all were caught at the bottom in the southeastern part of the lake near Saugatuck, Michigan. Pontoporeia was the most commonly reprented food item in the stomach contents of the fish examined, with immature midges, Mysis (a type of freshwater shrimp), copepods, cladocerans, fingernail clams and crayfish also being represented. Different species consumed different proportions of foods. Zooplankton was the principle food of alewives and spottail shiners, but was also consumed in small quantities by yellow perch and trout perch. Mysis was important to fourhorn sculpins, in addition to Pontoporeia. Immature midges were a major portion of spottail shiners and trout perch, also being consumed by alewives. Fish were often the most important food of yellow perch in the largest size category. Crayfish were a sizable portion of the diet of yellow perch on rocky bottoms, but sparingly on smooth bottoms. Spottail shiners also ate substantial numbers of fingernail clams.

Book Plant Parasitic Nematodes

Download or read book Plant Parasitic Nematodes written by Bert Zuckerman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Parasitic Nematodes, Volume III provides a comprehensive discussion of the different advances in plant nematology. This includes biochemical techniques to taxonomy and innovation in transmission and scanning electron microscopy technology. It explains a broadened basis for understanding nematode physiology and behavior and the sensory mechanisms that govern nematode actions and plant host-nematode interactions. The book discusses the development of modern approaches to the evaluation and reduction of crop losses. The emphasis of this volume is on plant parasites and insights gained through research on other nematodes. In particular, the book explains the anatomical, developmental, behavioral, and genetic studies on the free-living nematode Cenorhabditis elegans, which is a widely used laboratory model for examining various biological problems. The information provided by various researches on C. elegans increases our understanding about the relevance of nematodes to general biological processes in higher organisms, including man. The book is divided into 19 chapters which cover the following concepts of plant nematology: biochemistry, cytochemistry, and genetics; morphology and function; host-parasite relations; and evaluation and control of crop losses. The present volume is an excellent reference for students, lecturers, and research professionals in plant parasitology and related fields.

Book Spatially explicit Habitat Characterization Suitability Analysis Verification and Modelling of the Yellow Perch Perca Flavescens Mitchell 1814 Population in Long Point Bay Lake Erie microform

Download or read book Spatially explicit Habitat Characterization Suitability Analysis Verification and Modelling of the Yellow Perch Perca Flavescens Mitchell 1814 Population in Long Point Bay Lake Erie microform written by Susan Elisabeth Doka and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2004 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different approaches were used to characterize, assess, test and model the fish-habitat interactions of yellow perch in Long Point Bay. Chapter 1 describes the methodologies for explicitly characterizing spatial and temporal habitat through mapping and modelling. Chapter 2 connects habitat and ontogenetic niche shifts in perch life history, with the aim of determining suitable habitat availability for the Long Point Bay perch population. Habitat suitability indices and models were used to map and identify the areas of suitable habitat, including thermal habitat. Chapter 3 compares a known distribution of yellow perch larvae with HSI predictions of habitat suitability as a validation exercise. Abundance and size distributions from the survey were compared to thermal and HSI predictions of suitable habitat to test for correspondence. The relationship between food availability and habitat characteristics, especially vegetation, were also tested. A model was developed in Chapter 4 that concentrated on the first year of life and the effect of consecutive constraints on early life stages with different habitat requirements. The purpose of the model was to compare the potential growth and survival of consecutive life stages in a spatially explicit manner when different habitat-based rules are imposed. The results highlight the importance of life history theory and knowledge of mechanisms used in habitat selection for determining limits to fish production.
