Book Marine Ecology of the Arabian Region

Download or read book Marine Ecology of the Arabian Region written by Charles R. C. Sheppard and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1992-07-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That part of the Indian Ocean bordering Saudi Arabia is a rich mosaic of coastal and marine ecosystems, both natural and man-made. Among these are coral reefs, mangroves, tidal flats, seagrasses, and other hard and soft substrata. Some ecosystems are relatively simple, while others such as the coral reefs are highly complex and among the most diverse in the Indian Ocean. The region divides into several large, semi-enclosed water bodies whose different physical characteristics result in distinct habitats. The overall aridity, extremes of water temperature, and often very high salinities have produced some of the most extreme marine climates on Earth. This book summarizes the available information on the region, then reviews the processes shaping the various marine and coastal systems. It relates patterns in marine assemblages to the strong environmental gradients and biogeographic barriers in the region. Finally, the book considers the human dimension. Some of the world's poorest and richest nations border these seas, making diverse claims on fisheries and other natural resources. The 1991 Gulf War is only the most recent of a range of impacts affecting the region. Approaches for resolving the increasing resource use conflicts are described. This volume will be of immense value to research workers, students of marine biology, and environmental managers in general, as well as to those with a particular interest in this part of the world. One of the few published works on this unique and diverse region Serves as a basic introduction to the area Provides a detailed analysis of ecosystem function Discusses human pollution and its effects

Book A List of References on the Biology of Shrimp Family Penaeidae Classic Reprint

Download or read book A List of References on the Biology of Shrimp Family Penaeidae Classic Reprint written by Edward Chin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of References on the Biology of Shrimp (Family Penaeidae) The references contained in this bibliography were com piled by the authors in the course of biological studies on com mercially important shrimp, a phase of the work carried on by the Gulf Fishery Investigations, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The references are listed only by authors. Although we recognize the limitations imposed by the lack of subject and taxonomic in dexes, we decided to release the bibliography in this form to make it immediately available to other workers. In order to keep the bibliography within reasonable compass, only those references which contain specific mention of shrimp be longing to the family Penaeidae are included. Because many of the publications were not available to us, some are listed incompletely or possibly erroneously; those we were unable to consult have been marked with an asterisk. No attempt was made to gather refer ences on subjects such as the technological aspects of the shrimp processing industry, palaeontological studies, or shrimp statistics, but a few references in those fields are listed. Shrimp statistics are published annually in the Fishery Statistics of the United States by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Articles dealing with fishing methods and gear have been included because of their general interest to fishery biologists. We hope that any errors or omissions will be brought to our attention. Book Introductions and Movement of Two Penaeid Shrimp Species in Asia and the Pacific

Download or read book Introductions and Movement of Two Penaeid Shrimp Species in Asia and the Pacific written by Mathew Briggs and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Penaeus vannamei and P. stylirostris are introduced species in Asia and the Pacific. They have now become important commercial shrimp species in many countries in Asia. The main reason behind the importation of P. vannamei to Asia has been the perceived poor performance, slow growth rate and disease susceptibility of the major indigenous cultured shrimp species, P. chinensis in China and P. monodon virtually everywhere else. However, for many reasons, particularly with the evidence of the introduction of exotic viruses to the region, there has been caution on the part of many Asian governments for the introduction of P. vannamei and P. stylirostris. Nevertheless, this caution has not been demonstrated by the private sector, which has been bringing stocks of illegal and often disease carrying P. vannamei into Asia from many locations, as well as moving infected stocks within Asia. The commercial success of these introductions, despite disease problems, has allowed the development of substantial culture industries for these alien penaeids within Asia, particularly in China and Thailand. One effect of this is that it is rapidly becoming difficult to control the importation and development of this new industry. This report attempts to gather all of the currently available data on the extent of P. vannamei and P. stylirostris importation and culture in Asia, its potential problems and benefits, and in this way to serve as a source document from which to investigate further means by which control over this issue might be re-established. Recommendations aimed at controlling the importation, testing and culture of these species have been made for all levels and are included in this report.--Publisher's description.

Download or read book Report of the FAO Australia Workshop on the Management of Penaeid Shrimp Prawns in the Asia Pacific Region Kooralbyn Valley Queensland Australia 29 October to 2 November 1984 written by FAO/Australia Workshop on the Management of Penaeid Shrimps/Prawns in the Asia-Pacific Region and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical shrimp fisheries cause management problems in many regions of the world. The experiences within the Asia-Pacific region are reviewed from seven aspects: a) the dynamics of shrimp stocks; b) the interaction with other species; c) controls on size of capture; d) controls on fishing effort; e) allocation: f) data/information; and g) economics and trade. Most significant is the increase in value of shrimp fisheries that can be obtained from controls that increase the size of shrimp at capture.
