Book Study on Soil Productivity of Paddy Fields in Thailand

Download or read book Study on Soil Productivity of Paddy Fields in Thailand written by Satoru Motomura and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was carried out to analyse the production characteristics of paddy soils in Thailand in relation to soil fertility with a view to contributing to the advancement of rice production. For this purpose, observations of soil profiles were made to analyse the soil conditions of the paddy fields, which cover various kinds of soils in representative rice growing areas throughout the whole country. Physical, chemical and clay mineralogical analyses of the soil samples collected during the field observation of the profiles were conducted to identify the soil factors limiting rice production and/or the extent of possible soil damage among the various kinds of soil groups. Based on these results, several appropriate soil management and fertilization practices were suggested.

Book Economic gains of improving soil fertility and water holding capacity with clay application the impact of soil remediation research in northeast Thailand

Download or read book Economic gains of improving soil fertility and water holding capacity with clay application the impact of soil remediation research in northeast Thailand written by Saleth, R. M., Inocencio, A., Noble, A. D., Ruaysoongnern, S. and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2009 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Declining productivity of agricultural soils in Northeast Thailand is a challenge facing land managers and farmers. A program was initiated in 2002 to investigate the potential role of incorporating clay-based materials into degraded soils as a means of enhancing productivity. This research report attempts to provide an ex-post assessment of the field level impact and economic viability of this approach, using the empirically derived estimates of the average income impacts that the application of bentonite or clay technology has generated among farm communities in Northeast Thailand. From an exclusive IWMI perspective, the impact evaluation suggests that the program has a net present value (NPV) of US$0.41 million with a benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of 2.44 for the sample, and a NPV of US$21 million with a BCR of 75 for the region.

Book Changes in Paddy Soil Fertility in Tropical Asia under Green Revolution

Download or read book Changes in Paddy Soil Fertility in Tropical Asia under Green Revolution written by Junta Yanai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the effect of the Green Revolution (GR) on long-term changes in the fertility status of paddy soils in tropical Asia. While information on long-term changes in soil fertility status are rather limited due to difficulties in obtaining past data or samples for comparison, this investigation on temporal changes in soil fertility is possible by comparing fertility status in the 2010s, which the authors examined recently, with those from the 1960s, when GR was initiated, which was reported by Kawaguchi & Kyuma (1977). More than 220 paddy soils collected from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia were analyzed for their physicochemical properties as well as total and available fractions of plant macro- and micro- essential elements, and their temporal changes were examined in addition to their spatial variation in each country. The most significant change was a drastic increase of available phosphorus in soils, possibly due to fertilization after the GR. Changes in organic matter, pH, and other nutrients were relatively small. A considerable decrease in the content of some micronutrients was also observed. Long-term studies on soil fertility status in the past and present will be useful to establish soil/fertilizer management for sustainable rice production in the future. This book is an essential reading for soil scientists, agricultural scientists, environmental scientists, as well as policymakers and nongovernmental officers such as FAO.

Book Proceedings of Symposium on Paddy Soils

Download or read book Proceedings of Symposium on Paddy Soils written by Institute of Soil Science, Academia Sinica and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China contributes a large part to rice production, one of the most important crops in the world. It is estimated that in China rice constitutes about half of the total food production, covering an area of about 30 % of \08 hectares of cultivated land of the whole country. Owing to the peculiar water regime, paddy soils possess quite different properties physically, chemically and biologically as compared with those of upland soils. Such properties have a conspicuous effect on fertility and management practice of paddy field. For the purpose of summing up the past work and opening up new prospects, a "Symposium on Paddy Soils" was organized under the auspices of Academia Sinica, held on October 19-24, 1980 in Nanjing, which was followed by a seven-day paddy soil excursion in the lower Changjiang Delta. In addition to 120 Chinese soil scientists, 56 guests coming from America, Asia, Europe and Oceania attended the symposium on invitation. A total of 110 papers were presented either orally or by poster. All these are collected and published in the present proceedings which we hope may be helpful to the scientific exchanges between soil scientists of China and other countries.
