Book Geographic and Oceanographic Research in Indian Waters

Download or read book Geographic and Oceanographic Research in Indian Waters written by Robert Beresford Seymour Sewell and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 1994 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book The Geographic and Oceanographic Research in Indian Waters , the author has attempted to bring together the results that have been obtained from a study of oceanography which includes not only the hydrographic and meteorological conditions present but also the topography of the sea-floor and the character of its deposits, as well as the formation and structure of the coral reefs and islands, in the area that has been surveyed by the Marine Survey of India and as such termed as Indian waters. The book presents all the knowledge possessed at that time regarding the physical conditions present in India seas. In the Author s opinion the investigations regarding the conditions present in the waters of the sea have shown conclusively that these are in a continuous state of change. In consequence of all this continual change, isolated observations taken by Challenger , Valdavia etc, give merely a picture of the conditions existing at the actual moment when the observations were made and furnish no guide as to what may be the state of affairs even a few hours later. The effect of these changes on the fauna must be considerable and in consequence the study of the physical conditions that exist in any given area forms an important branch of the study of the bionomics of that area. Contents Chapter 1: The Geography of the Andaman Sea Basin; Chapter 2: A Study of the Nature of the Sea-Bed and of the Deep-Sea Deposits of the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal; Chapter 3: Maritime Meteorology in Indian Seas; Chapter 4: The Temperature and Salinity of the Coastal Water of the Andaman Sea; Chapter 5: The Temperature and Salinity of the Surface Waters of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, with References to the Laccadive Sea; Chapter 6: The Temperature and Salinity of the Deeper Waters of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea; Chapter 7: The Topography and Bottom Deposits of the Laccadive Sea; Chapter 8: Studies on Coral and Coral-Formations in Indian Waters; Chapter 9: Index.

Book Coral Reefs of the Indian Ocean

Download or read book Coral Reefs of the Indian Ocean written by T. R. McClanahan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-10-12 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coral reefs are among Earth's most diverse, productive, and beautiful ecosystems, but until recently, their ecology and the means to manage them have been poorly understood and documented. In response to the inadequate information base for coral reefs, this book reviews the ecological and conservation status of coral reefs of the Western Indian Ocean, bringing together presentations of the region's leading scientists and managers working on coral reefs.Coral Reefs of the Indian Ocean: Their Ecology and Conservation starts with a general overview of the biogeography of the region and a historical account of attempts to conserve this ecosystem. It goes on to describe the state of the reefs in each of the countries with coral reefs, and it concludes with a series of management case studies. The book also summarizes most of the existing ecological information on reefs in this region and efforts at management, making it useful for students, teachers, and investigators interested in tropical or marine ecology, conservation biology and management, and environmental sciences.

Book The Coral Reef Era From Discovery to Decline

Download or read book The Coral Reef Era From Discovery to Decline written by James Bowen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 4 June 1629, the Batavia, pride of the Dutch East India Company Fleet, was wrecked on her maiden voyage in a seemingly empty expanse of the Indian Ocean. The question “how did this happen?” led to 300 years of investigation by those curious to solve the enigma: what are corals and how are coral reefs formed?. Relying heavily on primary source material Part 1 traces the sequential evolution of scientific thought and practice as the author explores the way this evolution is reflected in the search for understanding corals. At each stage, answers lead to fresh questions that challenge investigators to solve the riddle and new branches of science emerge. Then, with the first enigma finally understood, a new enigma arose. Why are Reefs dying? Part 2 traces the range of problems that have emerged in the past 50 years as marine, ecological, reef and climate scientists attempt to put the pieces of the jigsaw together. Is there a new “canary in the coal mine” warning of the fate of the world as we know it if man’s impact on his environment continues unchecked?.

Book The History of the Study of Landforms

Download or read book The History of the Study of Landforms written by Richard J. Chorley and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 1964 with total page 1068 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the fourth volume in the definitive series, The History of the Study of Landforms or The Development of Geomorphology. Volume 1 (1964) dealt with contributions to the field up to 1890. Volume 2 (1973) dealt with the concepts and contributions of William Morris Davis. Volume 3 (1991) covered historical and regional themes during the 'classic' period of geomorphology, between 1980 and 1950. This volume concentrates on studies of geomorphological processes and Quaternary geomorphology, carrying on these themes into the second part of the twentieth century, since when process-based studies have become so dominant. It is divided into five sections. After chapters dealing with geological controls, there are three sections dealing with process and form: fluvial, glacial and other process domains. The final section covers the mid-century revolution, anticipating the onset of quantitative studies and dating techniques. The volume's objective is to describe and analyse many of the developments that provide a foundation for the rich and varied subject matter of contemporary geomorphology. The volume is in part a celebration of the late Professor Richard Chorley, who devised its structure and contributed a chapter.
