The methods are intended for use by microbiologists and plant pathologists anywhere in the world
Download or read book Phytobacteriology written by J. D. Janse and published by CABI. This book was released on 2006 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive manual of phytobacteriology is heavily illustrated with over 200 colour photographs and line illustrations. It begins by outlining the history and science of bacteriology and gives an overview of the diversity and versatility of complex bacteria. It then explains the characterization, identification and naming of complex bacteria, and explores how bacteria can cause disease and how plants react to such disease. The book also discusses the economic importance of bacterial diseases as well as strategies for their control and the reduction of crop losses. It concludes with fifty examples of plant pathogenic bacteria and the diseases that they cause.

Download or read book Durability of Disease Resistance written by Th. Jacobs and published by Springer. This book was released on 1993-06-30 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From February 24 -28, 1992 an international symposium on Durability of Disease Resistance was held at the International Agricultural Centre in Wageningen, the Netherlands. The symposium, organized by the Department of Plant Breeding of Wageningen Agricultural University and the Centre for Plant Breeding and Repro duction Research, CPRO-DLO, was part of the DGIS funded programme Durable Resistance in Developing Countries. Without any form of prevention or protection nearly all crops will be seriously or even severely damaged by a range of pathogens. In modern agriculture man has been able to control many if not most pathogens using i) pesticides, ii) phyto sanitary methods such as control of seed and plant material in order to start a crop disease free, iii) agronomic measures such as crop rotation, iv) disease resis tance or combinations of these measures. Over the years the use of pesticides has increased enormously and so did the pro blems associated with pesticide use, such as environmental pollution and building of resistance and tolerance to these pesticides in the pathogens. The use of resis tance too increased strongly over the years and here too problems arose.

Download or read book Bacteriophages for Plant Disease Control written by Prashant Pant and published by Delve Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing need for increased food production globally has led the farmers and scientists equally to devise means to increase plant productivity through several practices, including disease management. A number of plant diseases caused by bacteria have huge economic impact on global crop productivity. Although chemical control practices may be effective, they pose a threat to the environment and to the food chain. With the discovery of antibiotics in the 1940s, the concept of using bacteriophages was abandoned. However, its use has re-emerged, and is a rapidly growing area for controlling bacterial plant pathogens. In this book, we present the historical and recent developments, concepts, factors, challenges and concerns of using bacteriophages for plant disease control. We hope that the book will be a valuable reference for students, researchers, teachers as well as agriculturists while choosing environmentally safe and sustainable plant pest management techniques. We also look forward to your suggestions for improving the book.
