Download or read book Progress in Lipid Research written by Ralph T. Holman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Lipid Research, Volume 18 focuses on the advancements of processes, methodologies, and approaches involved in lipid research. The selection first elaborates on lipid composition of marine and estuarine invertebrates; role of acylcoenzyme A: cholesterol O-acyltransferase in cholesterol metabolism; and synthesis of acyl lipids in plant tissues. Discussions focus on fatty acid synthesis, turnover of complex lipids, arterial wall and atherosclerosis, cholesteryl ester metabolism, and solubilization. The text then examines the effects of ethanol ingestion on lipid metabolism, including fatty acid oxidation and ketogenesis, lipid peroxidation, plasma triacylglycerols and lipoproteins, phospholipid metabolism, and cholesterol and bile acids. The publication takes a look at lipid metabolism in liver and selected tissues and in the whole body of ruminant animals and the effect of caval shunts on lipid metabolism. Topics include adaptation and regulation of lipid metabolism in the whole animal, lipid metabolism in specific tissues, and the effects of caval shunts on tissue lipids. The text also ponders on lipid metabolism in the neonatal ruminant, as well as transfer of lipids across the placenta, maternal contribution to fetal lipid requirements, and placental lipid metabolism. The selection is a dependable source of data for readers interested in lipid research.

Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Natural Products Analysis is a thorough guide to the latest analytical methods used for identifying and studying bioactive phytochemicals and other natural products. Chemical compounds, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, carotenoids and saponins are examined, highlighting the many techniques for studying their properties. Each chapter is devoted to a compound category, beginning with the underlying chemical properties of the main components followed by techniques of extraction, purification and fractionation, and then techniques of identification and quantification. Biological activities, possible interactions, levels found in plants, the effects of processing, and current and potential industrial applications are also included. - Focuses on the latest analytical techniques used for studying phytochemical and other biological compounds - Authored and edited by the top worldwide experts in their field - Discusses the current and potential applications and predicts future trends of each compound group
Download or read book Acid base Behavior in Aprotic Organic Solvents written by Marion Maclean Davis and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unified picture of acid-base behavior in aprotic organic solvents is presented, based on an extensive survey of the literature and experimental results of the author and associates. Evidence given to support this picture includes data pertaining to colligative properties of acids, bases, and salts and also conductance, dielectric constants, distribution between immiscible solvents, and spectral absorption in the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet. The acids upon which attention is centered are proton-donor compounds that are measurably ionized in water, such as aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids, substituted phenols and mineral acids. The bases of principal interest are likewise compounds capable of forming ions in water, for example, aliphatic and aromatic amines and derivatives of guanidine or pyridine. The solvents emphasized are hydrocarbons and halohydrocarbons, but data for dipolar aprotic solvents (for example, acetone, acetonitrile, and nitrobenzene) are included. Contrasts in acid-base behavior and in acidity and basicity scales in aprotic and water-like solvents are discussed. The role of hydrogen bonding in aprotic solvents is discussed at length. Important types of hydrogen-bonded structures include chelate rings; self-associated acids, bases, and salts; hydrogen-bonded ion pairs; and homo- and heteroconjugate cations and anions. Examples are given in which hydrogen bonding of these types affects such properties as the absorption spectrum of a salt, the catalytic effect of an acid, and the accurate location of a titration endpoint. Download or read book Springer Handbook of Marine Biotechnology written by Se-Kwon Kim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 1517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Springer Handbook provides, for the first time, a complete and consistent overview over the methods, applications, and products in the field of marine biotechnology. A large portion of the surface of the earth (ca. 70%) is covered by the oceans. More than 80% of the living organisms on the earth are found in aquatic ecosystems. The aquatic systems thus constitute a rich reservoir for various chemical materials and (bio-)chemical processes. Edited by a renowned expert with a longstanding experience, and including over 60 contributions from leading international scientists, the Springer Handbook of Marine Biotechnology is a major authoritative desk reference for everyone interested or working in the field of marine biotechnology and bioprocessing - from undergraduate and graduate students, over scientists and teachers, to professionals. Marine biotechnology is concerned with the study of biochemical materials and processes from marine sources, that play a vital role in the isolation of novel drugs, and to bring them to industrial and pharmaceutical development. Today, a multitude of bioprocess techniques is employed to isolate and produce marine natural compounds, novel biomaterials, or proteins and enzymes from marine organisms, and to bring them to applications as pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals or nutraceuticals, or for the production of bioenergy from marine sources. All these topics are addressed by the Springer Handbook of Marine Biotechnology. The book is divided into ten parts. Each part is consistently organized, so that the handbook provides a sound introduction to marine biotechnology - from historical backgrounds and the fundamentals, over the description of the methods and technology, to their applications - but it can also be used as a reference work. Key topics include: - Marine flora and fauna - Tools and methods in marine biotechnology - Marine genomics - Marine microbiology - Bioenergy and biofuels - Marine bioproducts in industrial applications - Marine bioproducts in medical and pharmaceutical applications - and many more...
