I am content that the reader should form his own opinion upon it. Book On the Stage Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book On the Stage Vol 2 of 2 written by Dutton Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Stage, Vol. 2 of 2: Studies of Theatrical History and the Actor's Art Satin covering the great toe is then strength ened by being darned or sewn over, and the foot is thus free to rest upon its point. These shoes of course soon wear out, and their constant renewal is a Serious expense to the ballet-girl who provides her own equipments. In Paris the dancers' shoes, supplied by the administration of the Opera, are presumed when made of white satin to suffice for six representations; when made of flesh colour they are required to serve upon ten occasions. A dancer who is clever with her needle can, of course, cover the old satin of her shoes with new. Other articles of attire necessary to the ballet-girls' calling are fleshing bodies, tar latan petticoats - varying in number according to the fashion of the times or the taste and means of the wearer, but rarely less than four - and, most important of all perhaps, the tights. These vary in cost, as they are made wholly of silk, partly of silk and partly of cotton, or-as in the humbler theatres - wholly of cotton; they may thus be bought either for a few shillings or at an expense of several pounds. But they require to be frequently cleaned and their flesh colour to be revived by the use of rose-pink; while the material is not very durable and has a tendency to go into ladders, the failure of one silk thread causing an open line to run down the entire length. Accidents from fire, if they occur more rarely than once they did, must yet be counted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book Studies in Stagecraft Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Stagecraft Classic Reprint written by Clayton Meeker Hamilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Stagecraft Thrs book is a companion volume to the theory OF the theatre. The principles outlined in the former work were derived from a study of dramatic art in general, without particular reference to any single period; but the principles outlined in the present work have been derived mainly from a study of the drama of to-day. In this growing age of stagecraft, it is necessary that criticism should bestir itself to keep astride with the rapid revolutions in dramatic artistry that are being effected before our very eyes. The theory OF the theatre dealt chiefly with principles inherited by the present from the past: but studies IN stagecraft deals chiefly with principles that seem destined to be bequeathed by the present to the future. Most of the studies included in this volume have appeared, in earlier versions, in one or another of the magazines in which, in recent years, I have con ducted departments of dramatic criticism, - namely, The Bookman, Vogue, Everybody's Magazine, and Dress and Vanity Fair. One chapter has been com pounded from two papers contributed to Art and Progress. To the proprietors of these publications I am indebted for the privilege of quoting from my contributions to their pages. It is scarcely necessary to add that these studies have been diligently revised and, in many passages, entirely rewritten.
