Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of the Mind in Christ The task must indeed be difficult, and is perhaps in some respects impossible. Yet its difficulty or the imperfection of its results cannot form sufficient reason for shirking it. The mystery which broods over the whole subject calls for care and humility, but does not seal us into a necessary ignorance; whilst the results which may be gained, though they may seem small, must be considered to warrant any trouble put forth. For all that concerns the person of Jesus Christ must ever take rank as of first value. And this subject has significance second to none even of those which are concerned with Him; for on it depends the worth of much of His teaching and our conception of His work. Book Hard Sayings of Jesus Christ

Download or read book Hard Sayings of Jesus Christ written by William Leighton Grane and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hard Sayings of Jesus Christ: A Study in the Mind and Method of the Master In a former volume the present writer has endeavoured to define the principles upon which a reasonable faith in the Inspiration of Holy Scripture may securely rest. As one of these principles it was recognised that a difference of weight and value attaches to different parts of the Library we call the Bible. Now one of these parts is plainly of paramount importance. For few will fail to find the very heart and soul of the biblical body in the words of "The Word of God" Himself. By this, the core of Christianity, its claim on the hearts and lives of men must finally be judged. And upon their acceptance or rejection of this, the future of the Faith must eventually depend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind of Jesus The mind of Jesus! What a study is this! To attain a dim reflection of it, is the ambition of angels - higher they can not soar. "To be conformed to the image of His Son!" - it is the end of God in the predestination of His Church from all eternity. "We shall be like Him! - it is the Bible picture of heaven! In a former little volume, we pondered some of the gracious Words which proceeded out of the mouth of Jesus. In the present, we have a few faint lineaments of that holy Character which constituted the living exposition and embodiment of His precepts. But how lofty such a standard! How all creature-perfection shrinks abashed and confounded before a Divine portraiture like this! He is the true "Angel standing in the sun," who alone projects no shadow; so bathed in the glories of Deity that likeness to Him becomes like the light in which He is shrouded - "no man can approach unto it." May we not, however, seek at least to approximate, though we can not adequately resemble? It is impossible on earth to associate with a fellow-being without getting, in some degree, assimilated to him. So, the more we study "the Mind of Christ," the more we are in His company - holding converse with Him as our best and dearest friend - catching up his holy looks and holy deeds - the more shall we be "transformed into the same image." Book Jesus Christ and the Life of the Mind

Download or read book Jesus Christ and the Life of the Mind written by Mark A. Noll and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-16 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind (1994) Mark Noll offered a forthrightly critical assessment of the state of evangelical thinking and scholarship. Now, nearly twenty years later, in a sequel more attuned to possibilities than to problems, Noll updates his earlier assessment and charts a positive way forward for evangelical scholarship. Noll's Jesus Christ and the Life of the Mind shows how the orthodox Christology confessed in the ancient Christian creeds, far from hindering or discouraging serious scholarship, can supply the motives, guidance, and framework for learning. Christian faith, Noll argues, can richly enhance intellectual engagement in the various academic disciplines -- and he demonstrates how by applying his insights to the fields of history (his own area of expertise), science, and biblical studies in particular. In a substantial postscript Noll candidly addresses the question How fares the "evangelical mind" today? as he highlights "hopeful signs" of intellectual life in a host of evangelical institutions, individuals, and movements. -- From publisher description.

Book excerpt: Today, "What would Jesus do?" is a question commonly posed by and among Christian believers. In this classic work of theology, author John R. Macduff poses a fascinating variation on this question: what -- and how -- did Jesus think? This volume is indispensable for anyone interested in delving deeper into Christian epistemology. "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" Philippians 2:5 "Arm yourselves likewise with the same mind" 1 Peter 4:1 THE MIND OF JESUS! What a study is this! Book The Mind of God and the Works of Nature

Download or read book The Mind of God and the Works of Nature written by James Orr and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians of science have long considered the very idea of a law-governed universe to be the relic of a bygone intellectual culture that took it largely for granted that a divine lawmaker existed. Many philosophers of science today insist that the claim that laws of nature are hardwired into the fabric of physical reality is laden with implausibly theological assumptions, preferring instead to treat them as theoretical axioms in an optimal description of nature's regularities, or else as robust patterns of causal connections or causal powers whose status can be reconciled to the stringent demands of metaphysical naturalism. Yet the metaphor of lawhood has proven more difficult to dislodge than the theistic commitments it once presupposed, not least because it preserves the widespread intuition that the task of scientific inquiry is not to stipulate the difference between a lawful and an accidental regularity in nature, but to discover it. Taking its cue from the repeated failure to find naturalistic alternatives to divine lawmaking, this book undertakes a retrieval and reappraisal of a high-scholastic philosophy of nature that grounds lawlike regularities in the conceptual and causal powers of God and, having done so, concludes that the metaphysical framework of classical theism yields a more powerful and parsimonious explanation of the rhythms and patterns of the natural world than its secular rivals.
