Book Studies of the Effects of Sub Zero Storage Temperatures on the Properties of Pre Mixed Polysulphide Sealants

Download or read book Studies of the Effects of Sub Zero Storage Temperatures on the Properties of Pre Mixed Polysulphide Sealants written by John W. Barber and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pre-mixed polysulphide sealants were stored at -20, -30 and -40 C for selected intervals and then tested for conformity for the requirements of the appropriate MIL-specification in regard to cure rate or hardness, application time, tack-free time and peel strength. For Pro-Seal 899 and PR-1750 sealants, no significant change in hardness or peel strength occurred after prolonged storage at temperatures of -20 C and below; a minor decline in peel strength occurred with PR-1422. Application properties were also maintained for extended periods and at -40 C tests terminated only due to consumption of samples after storage times ranging from 7 to 16 weeks. These storage lives far exceed manufacturers' limits. Batch variations and stricter observation of class requirements could influence recommended storage times but at -40 C even materials such as PR-1750, which have a close tolerance in application life rating, may be pre-mixed and be safely stored for at least 10 weeks. Both class A and B sealants may be stored in pre-mixed form provided their application lives are at least 2 hours. Thawing is most conveniently and efficiently achieved by allowing the frozen sealant to equilibrate at room temperature. (Author).

Book Effect of Temperature on the Storage Life of Polysulfide Sealants

Download or read book Effect of Temperature on the Storage Life of Polysulfide Sealants written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The storage performance of a range of PR-1422, PR-1436G and PR-1750 two part polysulfide aircraft sealants of A and B classes, packaged both in cans and Semkit form, has been surveyed. The sealants were separately maintained at temperatures of -16, 2, 13 and 25 C and changes in viscosity of the polymer base compound, cure rate, peel strength and application life were monitored over 26 months. Concurrent changes in thiol content of the liquid polymer in the base compound and concentrations of Manganese(IV) or Chromium(VI) in the cure pastes were also determined. Variations in activity of cure pastes with time were assessed using LP-32 as a standard polymer and changes in polymer base compounds were monitored by measuring cure rate with laboratory prepared reference cure pastes. Low temperature storage extended storage life significantly. After maintenance at temperatures of 2 degs and below, the canned sealants still performed satisfactorily after two to three years storage. Most materials were procured several months after manufacture and with reduction of acquisition time further extension of the low temperature storage life could be expected. No significant storage differences between PR-1750 and PR-1422 sealants or the A or B classes were noted. Dichromate-based cure pastes were prone to lose solvent at higher storage temperatures and some dried pastes resulted. The main cause of failures was oxidation of the polymer base compound which led to surface skinning and was accompanied by a gradual drop in thiol content. Peel strength was unaffected by storage and the concentrations of Mn(IV) and Cr(VI) were little changed.

Download or read book Silane Coupling Agents written by Edwin P. Plueddemann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * It has been rumored that a bumble bee has such aerodynamic deficiencies that it should be incapable of flight. Fiberglass-reinforced polymer com posites, similarly, have two (apparently) insurmountable obstacles to per formance: 1) Water can hydrolyze any conceivable bond between organic and inorganic phase, and 2) Stresses across the interface during temperature cycling (resulting from a mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients) may exceed the strength of one of the phases. Organofunctional silanes are hybrid organic-inorganic compounds that are used as coupling agents across the organic-inorganic interface to help overcome these two obstacles to composite performance. One of their functions is to use the hydrolytic action of water under equilibrium condi tions to relieve thermally induced stresses across the interface. If equilib rium conditions can be maintained, the two problems act to cancel each other out. Coupling agents are defined primarily as materials that improve the practical adhesive bond of polymer to mineral. This may involve an increase in true adhesion, but it may also involve improved wetting, rheology, and other handling properties. The coupling agent may also modify the inter phase region to strengthen the organic and inorganic boundary layers.
