Download or read book Studies of Nonlinear Optical Wave Mixing and Phase Conjugation with Partially Coherent Waves written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this research was the theoretical and experimental investigation of the physics of self-pumped and mutually-pumped phase conjugators and the development of novel applications. In addition, the scope of the research was expanded to include the effect of partial coherence (finite coherence length) on nonlinear wave mixing and phase conjugation in photorefractive media. Specifically, the effect of finite mutual coherence on the formation of index gratings, especially 2k-gratings, in two-wave mixing and self-pumped phase conjugation was studied.

Book Principles of Phase Conjugation

Download or read book Principles of Phase Conjugation written by B.Y. Zel'Dovich and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been prompted by our des ire to share with others our apprecia tion of the harmony and beauty in a particular sphere of modern optics known as "optical phase conjugation". Practical applications of the phase conjugated wave are likely to be far-reaching. Optical phase conjugation (OPC) combines in itself aesthetic and pragmatic attractiveness, a synthesis that has made OPC a subject of general attention. The figure presents the ap proximate rate of publications (number of articles per year) on OPC in the world literature for recent years, the lower curve denoting the work carried out in the USSR. The efforts of a large unofficial international collective have yielded an impressive result. 150 100 50 1975 1980 At present, the physical pro ces ses underlying various OPC methods are quite understandable, and it is the physics of OPC to which our book is devoted. Practical and scientific applications of phase-conjugated waves, which are of no less interest, have been touched upon in short, as major achievements in this sphere are a matter of the future. Today there are two main methods of OPC: i) by backward stimulated light scattering, ii) by four-wave mixing. Naturally, much attention is given to these methods in our book which, after the introductory Chap. 1, can be divided into two almost independent parts - Chaps. 2 - 5, and Chaps. 6 - 8.

Book Phase Conjugation in a Layer of Nonlinear Material

Download or read book Phase Conjugation in a Layer of Nonlinear Material written by Henk F. Arnoldus and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical phase conjugation, or time reversal, of an optical wave front is an important technique to correct distortions in electromagnetic waves which are built up during propagation through a medium. The authors have studied theoretically optical phase conjugation through four-wave mixing in a slab of non-linear material. When two strong counter-propagating laser beams irradiate a non-linear crystal, the third-order susceptibility is activated, and can couple to an external weak probe field. A four-wave mixing process then generates a phase-conjugated or time-reversed replica of this incident probe field. They investigated the mechanism of the production of phase-conjugated radiation in such a configuration by solving the non-linear Maxwell equations for the electric field. The electric field in the material satisfies a set of two coupled wave equations, which couple positive and negative frequency components of the electric field. It is shown that the polarisation of the pumps and the tensorial nature of the interaction can be accounted for by a simple polarisation operator in the wave equations. Maxwell's equations for the field in the layer admit plane-wave solutions, although the dispersion relations are very different from the usual linear relation between the frequency and the wave number. The coupling between the two waves exhibits a strong resonance near the frequency of the pump beams. These plane-wave modes can be matched across the boundaries of the layer to the probe field. The response of the material can then be expressed in terms of Fresnel reflection and transmission coefficients for both s- and p-polarisation. We have derived simple matrix equations for the set of Fresnel coefficients, which can be solved numerically, and the have also obtained closed-form analytical solutions for the various Fresnel coefficients. It is indicated that our solutions reduce to earlier results in the appropriate limits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this project we have performed both experimental and theoretical studies of optical beam phase-conjugation and of electromagnetic scattering and propagation with intense optical fields. During the reporting period we have: (1) demonstrated that atomic vapors require fewer photons to perform optical wave mixing that any other medium examined to date; (2) sowed theoretically that a one-joule broadband optical pulse, whose carrier wavelength is one micron, can impart nearly one GeV energy to a charged particle; (3) established the stringent experimental upper limits on the hyperpolarizabilities of C60 and C70 molecules in solution; (4) made the first direct time-of-flight measurements of the drift velocity of photoexcited carrier in any photorefractive insulator (n- type Bi12SiO2O); (5) determined the difference between the complex polarizabilities of different trap levels in insulators; (6) made quantitative predictions and measurements of spatial harmonic content of photorefractive gratings; (7) developed and applied moving-grating diagnostic techniques to photoexcited carriers; (8) demonstrated an exception to the law of exponential attenuation of weak monochromatic optical beams in a homogeneous medium. Book Four Wave Mixing and Optical Phase Conjugation in Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Devices

Download or read book Four Wave Mixing and Optical Phase Conjugation in Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Devices written by Gregory J. Vansuch and published by . This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four-wave mixing (FWM), a nonlinear optical process, was investigated in resonant cavity light emitting diodes (RCLEDs) and vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) below lasing threshold. These semiconductor photonic devices consisted of an optical gain region of quantum wells sandwiched between two distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirrors. Pump and probe lasers were injected into the devices to generate FWM. The dependence of FWM on bias current, pump laser power, and spectral and spatial separation between pump and probe lasers was investigated experimentally. A computer model of FWM based on the wave and carrier density equations was developed and agreed well with experimental results. Conjugate reflectivities of I were obtained in the VCSEL when bias current was below threshold but above transparency. Reasonable conjugate reflectivities were obtained for pump-probe detunings up to 2 GHz in both devices. Noncollinear FWM was performed for the first time in VCSELs or RCLEDs at angles up to 10 deg. Both experiment and model showed the possibility of generating a strong reflected conjugate signal while minimizing the reflected pump signal. The noncollinear FWM demonstrated the possibility of phase front conjugation for correcting aberrated signals in vertical cavity devices.

Book Studies of Degenerate and Nearly Degenerate Four Wave Mixing of Laser Radiation in Plasmas

Download or read book Studies of Degenerate and Nearly Degenerate Four Wave Mixing of Laser Radiation in Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Phase Conjugation is an area of nonlinear optics with a wide variety of potential applications. One method of generating as phase conjugate signal is with four wave mixing (FWM). In FWM, three input beams interact in a nonlinear medium, and a fourth beam is produced that is the phase conjugate of one of the input waves. Degeneate Four Wave Mixing (DFWM) is a special case of FWM in which all of the beams are at the same frequency. In a plasma, DFWM is an effective technique for phase conjugation in high density, low temperature plasmas. One way of enhancing the phase conjugate signal over and above the DFWM level is with Resonant Four Wave Mixing (RFWM), in which two of the input beams beat at a plasma resonance. In addition to enhancing the generated wave, RFWM can also serve as a diagnostic for many plasma parameters, such as the electron and ion temperatures, the ion acoustic velocity, and the damping rate. In this report, experimental evidence of RFWM with CO2 laser radiation (10.6 [mu]m) is presented, and the data is compared with theoretical predictions.
