Book The Book of Nature Study Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of Nature Study Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by John Bretland Farmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Nature Study, Vol. 4 If a plant is dug up and the underground parts freed from the soil the green leafy shoot will be found to have arisen from a thick brown underground stem Of rather irregular shape. The surface Of this is marked with narrow scars left by scale-leaves, and a little examination will throw light on the mode Of growth Of the plant. The leafy shoot grows straight up from the thin anterior portion Of the underground stem, and appears to be the development Of the apex Of the latter. In the axil of a scale leaf at the base Of the shoot is a large bud, which is destined to grow into next year's shoot. On looking at the Older portion of the underground stem we recognise the large circular scars left by the aerial stem at the end Of each annual joint or segment, further growth having always been carried on by a lateral bud. A number Of thick roots grow out from the underground stem, and the latter increases in thickness, its tissues serving as a place of storage for reserve food material. This is used in the earlier stages Of the growth Of the leafy shoots. The cow-parsnip is thus a perennial herb, the leafy shoots Of which die down each autumn, leaving the Old underground stem and the bud which continues the growth next season. When more than one bud is established the underground stem becomes branched, and more than one leafy shoot is sent up from it each year. Book The Nature Study Review 1908 Vol 4

Download or read book The Nature Study Review 1908 Vol 4 written by Maurice A. Bigelow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature-Study Review, 1908, Vol. 4: Devoted to All Phases of Nature-Study in Schools All of which goes to show that nature-study is not a definite and specific body of knowledge, but an attitude of mind; that its results are in no wise to be measured in terms of accumulated facts, but in an attitude of mind in the presence of facts. The thought that nature-study is a body of knowledge has done very much to retard its advance, very much more to confuse a matter which is, after all is said, extremely simple. If nature-study is merely the name for a device for securing a symmetrical intellect ual development through a wise training of the senses by the use of environmental material, then the notion so widely prevalent that nature-study necessarily means birds and flowers and ih sects and trees is an erroneous one. If it were true, nature-study would be practically impossible in the congested districts of our great cities or could at best be but imperfectly presented. It is difficult, however, for one to see why the habits of life, the food gathering and food - storing, the architecture and activities of the animal known as man should not furnish material as valu able and interesting as do other animals. It is extremely doubtful whether nature-study in narrow connotation of the past and of far too many schools at present is of any value at all commensurate with the time given to it in the schedule. On the other hand it is Obvious that work which closely relates the daily life and the school life, which uses the objects and phenomena of the environment as educational material has a value so high that it can scarcely be over estimated. These values can be secured only through the orderly and logically progressive training of the senses - the external organs of relation; by at least keeping functional these powers upon the strength, rapidity and precision of which so much of self-reliance and initiative ultimately depend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Nature, Vol. 5 of 5 While I was preparing for a re-publication of this Work, I received, on the subject of it, advices, criticisms, and compliments. The advices related to it's form. I have constantly adhered to that of 12mo. in these three successive editions, because it is more commodious, an easier purchase to the Reader, and more beneficial to the Author, because Pirates find less profit in counterfeiting it. The fashionable world, however, signified a preference in favour of an 8vo, as being more genteel, and because the page, having a broader margin, and admitting of a larger space between the lines, the impression would be more beautiful.
