Book Sampling Theory for Forest Inventory

Download or read book Sampling Theory for Forest Inventory written by Pieter G.de Vries and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest inventory may be defined as the technique of collecting, evaluating and presenting specified information on forest areas. Because of the generally la~ge extent of forest areas, data are usually collected by sampling, i.e. by making observations on only part of the area of interest. As there are many different sampling methods (e.g. Appendix 1), a choice must first be made as to which method suits the given field and financial circumstances best. On completion of the sampling procedure, the numerous data collected have next to be condensed to manageable representative quantities. Finally, from these quantities, inferences about the situation in the entire forest area are made, preferably accompanied by an indication of their reliability. This book is intended for students who want to know the whepefope of the sampling techniques used in forest inventory. The danger of lack of knowledge is a blind following of instructions and copying statistical formulae, or, even worse, feeding data into a computer loaded with a program that is said to print out the required information. In serious persons, such approaches may leave a feeling of dissatisfaction or even of professional incompetence, be cause of inability to direct or evaluate the procedure critically. If a student tries to improve his or her situation, he/she will find that the few existing forest inventory textbooks, though some with merit, either use confusing statistical symbols or do not adequately cover theoretical principles.

Book Operational Efficiency in Forestry

Download or read book Operational Efficiency in Forestry written by B. Sundberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is our conviction - based on many years of teaching and practical experience - that professional skill in forestry will develop more rea dily and more efficiently if forestry students are presented with a clear understanding, at an early stage, of the impact of the physical factors that both enhance and inhibit forestry activities. Tnis know ledge is best aquired by adressing the physical world of forestry with a set of analytical tools through which an almost infinite number of variables can be listed in order, be measured and their interaction be explored and resolved. This is the main purpose of this joint effort, presented in two volumes, Part I and Part II. Part I is analytic, written as a basic text for undergraduates in cour ses such as logging, transport, forest engineering and even forest ma nagement. It deals with the fundamentals of technology in forestry as determined by the physical environment. Briefly it can be visualized as the application of forestry wi thin the parameters: space, time and energy. Forestry is a process with a long time horizon. Free solar energy creates biomass which, with the aid of other forms of energy, is converted into products and services. A knowledge of the dependecies and interactions is indiGpensible for the forestry profession. The analytic approach serves two purposes: to bring about a clear un derstanding of the real world of forest and to develop tools through which efficiency and productivity can be explored and improved.

Book Sampling Methods Remote Sensing and GIS Multiresource Forest Inventory

Download or read book Sampling Methods Remote Sensing and GIS Multiresource Forest Inventory written by Michael Köhl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-10-19 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the state-of-the-art of forest resources assessments and monitoring. It provides links to practical applications of forest and natural resource assessment programs. It offers an overview of current forest inventory systems and discusses forest mensuration, sampling techniques, remote sensing applications, geographic and forest information systems, and multi-resource forest inventory. Attention is also given to the quantification of non-wood goods and services.

Book Research Approaches to Sustainable Biomass Systems

Download or read book Research Approaches to Sustainable Biomass Systems written by Seishu Tojo and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers, students and engineers working with biofuels and biomass are increasingly expected to comprehend a new holistic systems perspective that begins with wise crop breeding and cultivation techniques and informs the entire conversion to energy process. This volume provides diverse examples of successfully implemented sustainable biomass research in Asia, highlighting the challenges faced by designers of new biomass production facilities and tips on how to develop approaches to overcome them. In addition to providing an authoritative guide on the utilization of the authors’ sample feedstocks, rice straw and sunflower, the authors provide lessons relevant to stakeholders involved with all manner of biomass production projects by drawing out important comparisons and contrasts that must be taken into account when deciding how to utilize biomass as an energy resource in a way that is economically feasible and environmentally sustainable. Provides diverse examples of successfully implemented biomass research, highlighting insights on common bottlenecks and approaches developed to overcome them Features coverage of the full feedstock life cycle, from crop breeding to commercialapplication, focusing on 3 key areas: biomass production, biofuel conversion technologies, and sustainable practices Examines two regionally compatible feedstock, rice-straw and sunflower, performing a compare and contrast analysis of agricultural production methods, economics, conversion systems, and environmental impacts
