Book excerpt: Collisions involving Rydberg atoms reveal detailed information on the state of a background medium and can be used as diagnostic probes of temperature and density distributions in a neutral or ionized gas. Spectroscopy of Rydberg atoms in highly excited states reveals the interaction of the Rydberg electron with core electrons, including relativistic effects, and can be used for precise determination of fundamental constants. The advent of ultracold trapping and cooling methods in the last three decades has ushered in a new paradigm in Rydberg physics control and manipulation. The concept of the Rydberg blockade, for instance, al- lows for precise control of long-range dipolar interaction between atoms, creation of correlated many-body wave functions, and realization of macroscopic quantum entanglement and quan- tum logic operations. The formation of a new class of Rydberg molecules arising from ground and Rydberg atom collisions can be used to manipulate electron-atom scattering phase shifts, form and manipulate molecules with enormous permanent electric dipole moments, study Ry- dberg chemistry at the ultracold, and realize macroscopic quantum polaronic systems. In this thesis, I will investigate charge transfer from covalent ground-Rydberg collisions to form heavy ion pair states. In another related study, I explore the formation of spin-mixed ultralong range Rydberg molecules, by accounting for spin-dependent relativistic fine and hyperfine interac- tion. Such studies help to not only explain experimental observations, but also point to how molecular reactions can be controlled using small electric or magnetic fields.

Two scenarios were considered, one of which involves the neighbouring ground-state atoms arranged in a spatially structured configuration, while the other involves them distributed randomly in space. To calculate the influence of the multiple ground-state atoms on the Rydberg atom, Fermi-pseudopotential was used, which simplified greatly the numerical effort. In many cases, the few-body interaction can be written down analytically which reveals the symmetry properties of the system. In the structured case, we report the first prediction of the formation of ``Rydberg Borromean trimers''. The few-body interactions and the dynamics of the linear A-B-A trimer, where A is the ground-state atom and B is the Rydberg atom, were investigated in the framework of normal mode analysis. This exotic ultralong-range triatomic bound state exists despite that the Rydberg-ground-state interaction is repulsive. Their lifetimes were estimated using both quantum scattering calculations and semi-classical approximations which are found to be typically sub-microseconds. In the disordered case, the Rydberg-excitation spectra of a frozen-gas were simulated, where the nuclear degrees of freedom can be ignored. The systematic change of the spectral shape with respect to the density of the gas and the excitation of the Rydberg atom were found and studied. Some parts of the spectral shape can be described by simple scaling laws with exponents given by the basic properties of the atomic species such as the polarizability and the zero-energy electron-atom scattering length.

Trapped Rydberg ions are a new hybrid technology envisaged to have both the exquisite control of trapped ion systems and the strong interactions of Rydberg atoms. In this work a single trapped Rydberg ion is experimentally investigated. A trapped strontium ion is excited to Rydberg states using two ultraviolet lasers. Effects of the strong trapping electric fields on the highly-sensitive Rydberg ion are studied. After mitigating unwanted trap effects, the ion is coherently excited to Rydberg states and a quantum gate is demonstrated. This thesis lays much of the experimental groundwork for research using this novel system.

Starting with a dense sample of Rb atoms in a magneto-optical trap, we excite them to high Rydberg states (n = 30 - 90) with a single UV excitation pulse. Long-range molecular resonances with interatomic distances exceeding 104 a0 have been discovered. We have also observed the Rydberg excitation blockade, crucial for the implementation of quantum phase gates using neutral atoms. The physics behind these observations is attributed to the strong long-range van der Waals interactions among the Rydberg atoms. In addition, we have seen dipole (E1) forbidden but quadrupole (E2) allowed 5s → nd transitions, allowing us to determine the E2 oscillator strengths to these high Rydberg states. Our narrow-band UV pulsed laser system, with âˆ1⁄4100 MHz bandwidth, also allows us to measure the ratios of j-dependent oscillator strengths to the p and d Rydberg states.

Book excerpt: "On one side, atom-chip experiments have demonstrated to be a versatile tool to study quantum physics in cold atoms systems. On the other side, Rydberg atoms have exaggerated properties that makes them good candidates to study quantum information and quantum simulations protocols. In this thesis both system are put together with the aim to study Rydberg physics (in particular atom-atom interaction) in an atom-chip experiment. Due to the exaggerated properties of Rydberg atoms they are very sensitive to electric fields. Thus, the combination of Rydberg atoms with surfaces can be challenging. Therefore a detailed characterization of the mentioned stray electric fields via the analysis of Stark-Zeeman maps is crucial. We employ two-photon Rydberg Stark spectroscopy of a micron-sized cloud of magnetically trapped ultracold rubidium atoms to characterize the electric fields near our atom-chip. Once we characterized the local electric fields we were able to study in more detail the effect of Rydberg excitation in the ultracold cloud of atoms. For instance we observed the formation of ultralong-range Rydberg molecules in our system. In these molecules a ground state atom is weakly bound to the Rydberg electron. We also attempted to observe the effect of Rydberg blockade in the system by looking at the characteristics of Rydberg spectra. Finally we studied the possibility of inducing rf transitions within a Rydberg state manifold in order to enhance our detection method and populate states that are not accessible directly with a two-photon laser transition."--Samenvatting auteur.
