Book Studies in the History of the Greek Text of the Apocalypse

Download or read book Studies in the History of the Greek Text of the Apocalypse written by Josef Schmid and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2018-08-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in English Josef Schmid's landmark publication, Studien zur Geschichte des Griechischen Apokalypse-Textes, has been the standard work for understanding Revelation's Greek manuscript tradition and textual history for more than sixty years. Despite the fact that most major studies on the book are based on Schmid's work, the work itself has long been out of print, making it difficult for the broader scholarly community to reassess Schmid's conclusions in light of recent manuscript discoveries and technological advances. This new translation of the work makes Schmid's detailed review of the history of textual scholarship; his comprehensive examination of the origin, history, and development of the Greek manuscripts of the book of Revelation; and his assessment of John's peculiar linguistic writing style accessible to a new generation of scholars. Features A critical introduction that places Schmid's work in its historical and theoretical context Definitions and explanations of Schmid's text-critical terms and categories used in his construction of Revelation's Greek manuscript tradition The latest available information used to correct, update, and supplement Schmid's Greek manuscript data and historical and text-critical conclusions

Book A Commentary on the Apocalypse of John

Download or read book A Commentary on the Apocalypse of John written by Edmondo Lupieri and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2006-11-09 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmondo Lupieri's main goal in A Commentary on the Apocalypse of John is to introduce readers to the mental and spiritual world of John as both a first-century Jew and a follower of Jesus. The fruit of over ten years of research, a constructive response to postmodern criticism, and an academic best-seller in its Italian edition, Lupieri's commentary offers both new proposals and traditional interpretations to shed light on this complex coda to the biblical message. In an illuminating preface Lupieri discusses the strange world of the Apocalypse and promises an open commentary, full of original treatments of knotty interpretive problems. Maintaining a strong historical perspective throughout, he examines the text of the Apocalypse line by line, paying careful attention to the Greek text, offering a new translation, making wide use of apocryphal, pseudepigraphal, and Qumran literature, and often analyzing John's Apocalypse as compared to other Jewish apocalypses. Thoughtful, thorough, and nonsectarian, Lupieri's Commentary on the Apocalypse of John will appeal to anyone with a serious interest in the meaning of the biblical text.

Book The Apocalypse of St John

Download or read book The Apocalypse of St John written by D D and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apocalypse of St. John: The Greek Text, With Introduction, Notes and Indices The publication in the present year of Dr Hort's lecture-notes upon the Apocalypse has rendered necessary a few additions both to the introduction and to the notes Of this volume. Until my first edition had been published I was not aware that Dr Hort had lectured upon the subject, and the announcement that his notes were being prepared for the press came as a further and welcome surprise. Their value has been justly estimated by Dr Sanday in his preface to the work, and I need only add the hope that all readers of the present book may be able to consult Dr Hort's fresh and suggestive pages. In regard to the unity of the Apocalypse I am rejoiced to find that I have the support of his great authority. On the other hand he inclines decidedly to the earlier date, and upon some important points of exegesis his conclusions differ from those to which I had come. To the latter it has been impossible to do more than refer; upon the date of the book I have added a postscript to the chapter of my intro duction which deals with that question, briefly stating the grounds upon which I am unable to abandon the traditional view. Besides these additions a few corrections, supplied by reviews or received from private friends, have been made in this edition, and the pagination has undergone some necessary changes. Book excerpt: The Revelation to John by Stephen Smalley is a magisterial interpretation of John's Apocalypse as a grand drama, which can only be properly understood in light of John's Gospel and letters and in the context of the Johannine community. As such, it offers the reader a significantly different approach to this enigmatic text than that offered by most contemporary commentaries. Working directly from the Greek text, Smalley offers a masterful analysis of the critical and literary dimensions of the Apocalypse for students and scholars alike. Contents include an in-depth, critical analysis of the Greek text of Revelation a wealth of scholarly interaction with other commentaries and interpretations of Revelation a canonical assessment of Revelation in light of other Johannine texts a historical understanding of Revelation in the context of the Johannine community an interpretation of Revelation as cosmic drama Here is a fresh contribution to the scholarly study of this captivating but often perplexing book of the Bible. Smalley demonstrates that the Apocalypse speaks directly to any situation in any age and offers a portrait of God's loving justice that is relevant to our own society.
