CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE GRAY HERBARIUM OF HARVARD UNIVERSITY, NEW SERIES, NO. XXXII. STUDIES IN THE EUPATORIEAE. By B. L. Robinson. Presented March 14,1906. Received February 21,1906. Introductory. During the summer of 1905 the writer spent some weeks in visiting several of the larger herbaria of Europe in order to examine and photograph plants not hitherto authoritatively represented in the Gray Herbarium. In the course of this work considerable attention was given to the tropical American species of the great genus Eupatorium and several allied genera. As must be expected in all such large and difficult groups, which have not been subjected to recent revision, the study of the type-specimens of several hundred species has yielded much new information on the synonymy and proper classification of the group. The collections examined were: (1) the herbarium of the Museum of Natural History in Paris, where the herbaria of Jussieu, Lamarck, and Michaux were consulted, and special attention given to an admirably preserved and well-nigh complete set of the tropical American plants collected by Humboldt and Bonpland and critically described by Kunth in the Nova Genera et Species; (2) the rich private herbarium of the DeCandolle family in Geneva, including the invaluable Prodromus types; (3) the herbarium of the Imperial Museum of Natural History at Vienna, noteworthy among other ways by containing the fullest series available of the species of Jacquin and an excellent series of the plants of Pohl and species of Poeppig and Endlicher; (4) the herbarium of the Royal Botanical Museum at Berlin, remarkably rich in South American as well as in Old World types and in the study of Eupatorieae specially noteworthy by exhibiting to its fullest extent the...

Book Exotic Plant Pests and North American Agriculture

Download or read book Exotic Plant Pests and North American Agriculture written by Charles Wilson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exotic Plant Pests and North American Agriculture examines the threat posed by exotic pests introduced to North American agriculture. It considers the impact of introduced pests on humans, and it highlights the need for intensified research efforts and international cooperation to prevent further introductions. Organized into 17 chapters plus an epilogue, this volume begins with a historical overview of pest introductions, including insects and mites, and possible introductions in the future. It then discusses the impact of introduced weeds in North America; ecology and genetics of exotic species; how to detect and stop pest introductions; and research on exotic insects, plant pathogens, and weeds. The reader is also introduced to the use of exotic natural enemies for biological control of exotic pests, prediction of potential epidemics caused by exotic pests, insurance against exotic plant pathogens, and international cooperation on controlling exotic pests. Scientists, plant pathologists, ecologists, and those working in academics, government research laboratories, and regulatory agencies will benefit from reading this book.

Book Flavonoids of the Sunflower Family Asteraceae

Download or read book Flavonoids of the Sunflower Family Asteraceae written by Bruce A. Bohm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flavonoids are secondary plant products that have previously been shown to be helpful in determining relationships among plant groups. This work presents comprehensively the occurrence, patterns of variation, and systematic and evolutionary importance of flavonoids in the sunflower family (Asteraceae), the largest family of flowering plants (23,000 species). It gathers together the more than 2500 reports of flavonoids in Asteraceae published between 1950 to the present and interprets these data in context of new taxonomic (especially generic) alignments. The authors discuss flavonoid patterns with reference to modern phylogenetic studies based on morphology and DNA data. This book provides, therefore, the most exhaustive synthesis and evaluation of the systematic and evolutionary import of flavonoids ever accomplished for any large family of angiosperms.
