Book Studies in the Acts of the Apostles Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in the Acts of the Apostles Classic Reprint written by William Robertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Acts of the Apostles Jerusalem. On the contrary, he refers to the city as if still in its grandeur, speaks of the Temple services as if still being observed, and alludes to individual localities, such, e.g., as Solomon's Porch, as if existing and well known. Had the terrible tragedies accompany ing the siege and fall of Jerusalem taken place, there would almost certainly have been some reference _to them. We know that Jerusalem was destroyed in the year a.d. 70. It is therefore concluded that the Book of Acts was written before that date. It has been noticed further that the writer makes no mention of the death of the Apostle Paul. If he had known that the Apostle had actually laid down his life for the Gospel, he could hardly have avoided mention of the fact. Now St. Paul was martyred at Rome probably about the year A. D. 67 or 68, and we therefore conclude that this Book was written before that date. The absence, moreover, of any reference to the writings of St. Paul or to those heresies which disturbed the peace of the Church in the later years of the first century confirms this view. It is believed, therefore, that the Book was written between the years a.d. 63 and 70, and the general Opinion is that it was written at Rome. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 3 The two volumes of New Testament studies by Professor Harnack, which have already appeared in this series, may be said without exaggeration to have marked an epoch in New Testament research. The third volume, The Acts of the Apostles, now presented in English form, is if anything more remarkable than its predecessors. In it Professor Harnack develops the position which he has estab lished in Luke the Physician, and subjects the Acts of the Apostles to a most searching investiga tion from almost all possible points of View. A very pleasing feature of this series of studies is the high esteem in which the author holds the researches of dis tinguished English scholars, such as Sir John Hawkins, Dr. Plummer, and Dr. Hobart. To those who, like the translator, have long felt that from the standpoint of scientific historical criticism it was inconceivable that the author of the Lukan writings could have been a companion of St. Paul, the conclusions of the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 1 of 2: Explained The materials of this book were collected in a course of academical instruction, and prepared for publication, in the first instance, With a view to the peculiar wants of ministers and students. But after the first chapter was in type, the writer was induced to recommence the work upon a new plan, in the hope of making it more generally hseful, by the reduction of its size, and the omission of all matter supposed to be interesting only to professional' or educated readers. This Will account for the prominence given to the English ver sion, the exclusion (for the most part) of the Greek text, and the absence of any detailed reference to other writers. It Will be found, however, that the constant subject of the exposition is the inspired original, and that one of its main objects is to perfect the translation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, in Four Books: With Copious Notes Perhaps the manner and style of the work may tend to produce a two-fold effect: first, to invite the attention of all Christians to the study of this inspired narrative; and secondly, to convince the public, that the Catholic Church loves to unlock the fountains of the Scriptures to her faithful and humble children. If I succeed in bringing about this result, my hopes will be crowned, and my labors abundantly rewarded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Notes on the d104 of the Acts of the Apostles This book is in the main a reprint of notes drawn up for the use of my own pupils in 1867. Many references to Thucydides will be found in these notes and for the following reason: it seems certain to me that the Author of the Acts was very familiar with certain parts of the History of Thucydides, and that much of what he read in Thucydides made a strong impression on his mind. I have no doubt whatever that he had studied with great care the whole of the Sixth Book of Thucydides; that he had read attentively a large portion of the Eighth Book; and that he was acquainted with some parts of the other Books. I have stated the reasons which have led me to this conclusion in a pamphlet, circulated privately in 1883. I will gladly send a copy of this pam phlet to any one who may desire to examine the evidence adduced by me in support of my opinion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 2 of 2 The first great movement, from Jerusalem to Antioch, having been recorded in the previous twelve chapters, the historian now enters on the second, beginning at Antioch and ending at Rome, in which the field of operations is the Gentile world, and the principal agent the Apostle Paul (xiii-xxviii.) The first and largest portion of this narrative is occupied with the Apostle's active ministry, or his official labours while at liberty (xiii-xxi.) The historical account of these commences with his first foreign mission, that to Cyprus and certain parts of Asia Minor (xiii, xiv.) The division of the text now immediately before us contains, the first part of this mission, from its inception in the church at Antioch to the arrival of the missionaries at Iconium (xiii.) We are first told how Barnabas and Saul were designated to the missionary work (1-3). They then sail from Syria to Cyprus (4.) They visit Salamis and Paphos in that island (5, 6.) A sorcerer resists them and is struck with blindness (6-11.) The Roman Proconsul is converted (12.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Concerning the Disciples of Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book Concerning the Disciples of Christ Classic Reprint written by Benjamin Bushrod Tyler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concerning the Disciples of Christ It will be noted that this claims Simply to be a hand-book. It contains the seeds of things. It could not be expected that the writer would choose a wider scope or give more elaborate details than will be found in this small volume. It is intended to be a guide to the reader, a manual setting forth in brief outline the 'matters with which it deals, and leaving the student to take up any line of thought suggested by its chapters and indulge in the largest liberty of investigation. Very profitably and judiciously the author dis cusses his subject under twenty-two divisions. In the use of this volume by the individual reader or by the circle there is suggestion here Of wide fields of research. In connection with the first five chapters very profitable study can be made of the Renaissance and the Lutheran Reformation, and of the great characters to whom the world is Specially indebted for its escape from the dark ages and its advance to the present high state of civiliza tion and religious liberty. In the development of the line of thought from chapters Six to twelve a series of studies of the Acts of the Apostles, of the cases of conversion reported there, Of apostolic church organization and church life could be pursued to great advantage. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Commentary on Acts of Apostles, Vol. 1 The composition of' my first commentary on Acts was begun when I was about thirty years of age, and the work was published about four years later. The greater part of the writing was done amid the distractions of the first two years of our civil war, and the volume was issued in the autumn of 1863, when men's thoughts were turned away from religion to the events of the mighty struggle. The publication of a commentary under such circumstances was considered so hazardous, that it was not undertaken until the demand for it was tested by a call for subscribers in advance. The response to this call was unexpectedly encouraging, and the volume W'io issued in the inexpensive form which it has since re tained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Acts of the Apostles and on the Epistles MY work explanatory of the Gospels has been long before the world, and I now complete my Observations on the New Testament with these Lectures on the Acts and the Epistles. They were prepared for the purpose of qualifying the Students entrusted to my care for an intelligent and bene ficial study of Commentaries and Treatises on Theology; and as it appeared to me desirable to keep them within moderate limits, I have abstained from critical discussions, and have in general been content to state my opinion, without a reference to the reasons on which it has been formed. They are committed to the press in the persuasion, that those who have received their education in Mag dalene Hall during the many years in which I have been Principal, will value them as an acceptable memorial of their University residence, and with the desire that they may promote the edification of all who read them, by leading them to a more diligent and prayerful perusal of this portion of the Word of God.
