Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Studies in Tennyson: Including a Commentary on "Maud" Such help is needed most of all in the interpreta tion of this popular but difficult work. As will be noticed further on, mistakes are to be met with even in the most recent commentaries on the In Memoriam; and the following Incident may give the reader an idea Of the care required to be taken in any attempt to elucidate the text. In the year 1881, Mr. Francis Storr, Editor Of the journal of Education, requested me to send to the journal each month some difficult passages from English literature, for the best solution of which he Offered prizes to his readers. On one of these occa sions I selected six passages from the In Memoriam, and, as usual, enclosed my explanations with them. But both the editor and the prize winner differed from me in regard to my interpretation of the follow ing lines in the introductory stanzas. Book Poems of Tennyson Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Tennyson Studies in Tennyson, written at different times, and now revised, enlarged, and reprinted. The doing of this revision has been a curious experience. I find that the youthful enthusiasm of my first pas sion for his work has cooled a little, so that some of the expressions of it need to be moderated. But my conviction of his lofty rank as a poet has not changed except to grow stronger. And the impres sion of his personality, so large and noble, so manly, strong, and free, so vigorously alive to all the manifold aspects of human life, so firm in his loyalties and liberal in his sympathies, so great a lover of nature, humanity, and God, -that vivid impression has. Not faded but deepened, since last I saw him in those late summer days at Aldworth, twenty-seven years ago. In the long interval what vast mutations have passed upon the surface of earthly things! What hideous warfare hath been waged, What kingdoms overthrown! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tennyson: A Critical Study For the existence of this book my publishers must be responsible. It seems to me impossible to say anything that is at once new and true about Tennyson. But, having undertaken to write a critical study of him, it seemed to me best to give, as clearly as I could, my own point of view, and for that reason I have abstained from extending my knowledge of the many books which have been written about him by admirable critics. Contemporary criticism of his earlier poems I have studied primarily for its historical interest, and in the process of illustrating it by quotations, I have had to expose my own work to very damaging comparisons. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tennyson Poet, Philosopher, Idealist: Studies of the Life, Work, and Teaching of the Poet Laureate Lest misunderstanding should arise, it is perhaps as well that I should explain at the outset that I have not at tempted to supply a biography of the late Lord Tennyson. I have given prominence to his literary career, and prefer ence to those facts which illustrated the literary side of his character. Believing, as I do, in the far-reaching and permanent efi'ects of early environment, I have recounted with some detail the events of Tennyson's youth; but in succeeding chapters I have only casually caught up the main threads of his personal history. Each chapter is a separate and complete study of some phase of Tennyson's work, and I have particularly endea voured to deal adequately with his religion, philosophy, and politics. Some doubtful points I hope to have set at rest by undertaking original investigations and by careful reference to standard authorities. The criticisms of Tenny son's contemporaries, especially those of his youth, are quoted at some length because of their interest and value. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Tennyson I offer these illustrations simply as commentaries on works which will take their place beside the masterpieces of classical literature, and which will, like them, be studied with minute and curious dili gence by successive generations of scholars. A versatility almost without parallel among poets has enabled Lord Tennyson to appeal to all classes. His poetry is the delight of the most fastidious and the most emotional. He touches Burns on one side, and he touches Sophocles on the other. But to the scholar, and to the scholar alone, will his best and most characteristic works become in their full signifi cance intelligible. By him they will be cherished. At the same time many most valuable hints have been derived from the writings of others, as from articles which have from time to time appeared in Reviews and Magazines. Before sending this essay to the press, a careful attempt has been made to recover, and give references to, any such prior publications, to which an acknowhave been lost sight of. Book The Life and Times of Tennyson Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life and Times of Tennyson Classic Reprint written by Thomas Raynesford Lounsbury and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Tennyson Professor Lounsbury's name, I suppose, is most closely associated by the public with his studies in Chaucer and Shakespeare. His literary taste, however, was singularly catholic. Pope and Dryden, for example, appealed to him strongly because of their pugnacity and the keenness of their satire. Their poems he knew intimately, and he often quoted passages from them in conversation, not always accurately but rather by way of a paraphrase which gave new edge to an epigram. Of later poets the ones he read most were Byron, Browning, and Tennyson. From any one of the three, he would repeat, when in the mood for it, long stretches running to hundreds of verses. Among the poems of Tennyson which he sometimes recited were 'Locksley Hall, ' the 'Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington, ' and parts of 'Maud, ' 'The Princess, ' and 'In Memoriam.' Many of the quotations in this volume were first written out from memory. This admiration for Tennyson began in youth and continued through a long life. It was his habit when a schoolboy to clip from the newspaper any new production of the poet and paste it in a scrapbook, first, I daresay, committing the lines to memory; and the most notable essay that he wrote while in college was a defence of 'Maud' against hostile criticism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Studies of Poems, New and Old The following is chiefly a selection from papers written for English literature classes at the Ladies' College, Cheltenham. Others are reprints from various periodicals. The first two were written for meetings of our Guild of old pupils, at which were given respectively scenes from Dante, and from Spenser's Faery Queene. I have thought it best to leave them in their original form. The allusions in the Britomart paper are to stained glass windows representing six episodes in the story, (1) Britomart is looking into the magic mirror. (2) She is clothing herself in armour in the Church. (3) She is defending the Red-cross Knight. (4) She is passing through the fire. (5) She meets Sir Arthegall. (6) She sends him out to accomplish his work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
