Book The Tai Languages of Assam

Download or read book The Tai Languages of Assam written by Stephen Morey and published by Pacific Linguistics. This book was released on 2005 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tai Languages of Assam - a grammar and texts presents a comprehensive linguistic analysis of two endangered Tai languages of Assam, Aiton and Phake, together with information about Tai Khamyang, a highly endangered variety. This book presents chapters on phonology, syntax, lexicography and the writing system, as well as discussing earlier recorded data on the Tai languages in detail. Together with the book, there is a CD version of the linguistic analysis, linked to text files, sound files and photographs. Every language example is linked to a sound file, and to a document file containing a full transcription of the text from which that example has come. The comprehensive nature of this linking between the grammatical analysis and the primary data allows linguists, other scholars and members of the Tai community to check any of the claims made in the analysis. This innovative combination of book and CD therefore represents both a grammatical description in the best traditions of linguistics as well as a substantial documentation of the Tai languages. In the CD version, an electronic appendix presents a rich corpus of texts, from a wide range of styles and genres, together with documents presenting a transcription, translation and thoroughly annotated analysis for each of the texts presented.

Book William J Gedney s Comparative Tai Source Book

Download or read book William J Gedney s Comparative Tai Source Book written by Thomas John Hudak and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides accurate and reliable data from 1,159 common cognates found in 19 dialects from the Tai language family. Originally collected by noted Tai linguist, the late William J. Gedney, the data are organized into the three branches of the Tai language family, the Southwestern, the Central, and the Northern, to facilitate comparisons among the various sound systems within the individual branches and within the Tai language family as a whole. Supplementing the cognates are phonological descriptions of each of the dialects. Included among the nineteen dialects are Siamese, White Tai, Black Tai, Shan, Lue, Yay, Saek, and dialects found at Leiping, Lungming, Pingsiang, and Ningming in China. The meticulous attention paid to consonants, vowels, and tones found in each cognate will allow for further dialect studies, for the investigation of questions concerning the tripartite division of the Tai language family, and for the continuing investigation into the reconstruction of the Proto-Tai language family and its wider genetic relationships.

Book Studies in Vietnamese Historical Linguistics

Download or read book Studies in Vietnamese Historical Linguistics written by Trang Phan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book facilitates constructive interdisciplinary dialogue among linguistics and philology specialists concerning various languages in Vietnam, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. The book’s principal objective is to investigate the interdisciplinary nature of language change, with a particular focus on analyzing the structural and socio-cultural components of the evolution of specific linguistic phenomena over time. The book concentrates on the five primary language families in the East and Southeast Asian linguistic arena, namely Austroasiatic, Tai-Kadai, Sino-Tibetan, Austronesian, and Hmong-Mien. In doing so, it develops understanding of the extent to which language change is the result of language-internal mechanisms, prolonged contact with other languages within the same linguistic area, and the surrounding socio-cultural milieu. Given that Vietnam presents a linguistic microcosm of the East and Southeast Asia region, the book is divided into two sections. The first centers on historical linguistics relating to major languages based in Vietnam, including Vietnamese and its significant neighbors, Tay and Nung. The subsequent section examines the transformations observable in other languages prevalent across East and Southeast Asia that are historically, typologically, and geographically related to languages from Vietnam, including Chinese, Formosan, and Philippine languages, as well as Hmongic languages. A product of a workshop sponsored by the Harvard Yenching Institute held at the Institute of Sino-Nom Studies, this book encompasses a significant contribution to the field of Vietnamese historical linguistics, which has been notably underexplored in academic research. It is relevant to linguists, philologists, historians, anthropologists, and cultural scholars interested in Vietnam in particular, and the Southeast and East Asian cultural and linguistic landscape at large.
