Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains summaries of the journal articles and technical reports which have been published on a project with the Information Systems Branch of the Office of Naval Research on speech analysis and synthesis. Several of the investigations have included both theoretical and experimental studies. The subjects of investigation have included: techniques of spectrographic analysis, the recording and reproduction of speech signals with ferroelectric tapes, the automatic analysis of the information-bearing acoustical parameters of speech, the effects of certain of the acoustical parameters of speech on linguistic judgments, linguistic considerations in the measurement of speech intelligibility, aural processing of the speech wave, and techniques of speech synthesis. After a short introduction, the report presents a brief summary of each article and technical report published during the course of the research project. (Author).

Book Speech Analysis and Synthesis

Download or read book Speech Analysis and Synthesis written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes research on speech analysis and synthesis during the period October 1, 1959 to September 30, 1963. The introduction of the report gives a general outline of the problems that were studies and indicates that the emphasis was on the search for the generative rules governing the production of speech. The work on speech synthesis included the modification and improvement of an existing electrical analog of the vocal tract and the design of a new synthesizer with improved capabilities. Experiments on the generation of several classes of speech sounds were carried out with the existing synthesizers. Techniques of reduction of speech spectra were developed, based on an analysis-by-synthesis approach. The properties of limited classes of natural speech events were studied both through acoustic analysis of the spectra and through direct examination of the articulatory processes. In the latter case both high-speed photography and cineradiographic techniques have been exploited. In addition, experimental investigations relating to the perception of speech and speechlike sounds have been carried out. (Author)x.

Book Speech Analysis Synthesis and Perception

Download or read book Speech Analysis Synthesis and Perception written by James L Flanagan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book has enjoyed a gratifying existence. 1s sued in 1965, it found its intended place as a research reference and as a graduate-Ievel text. Research laboratories and universities reported broad use. Published reviews-some twenty-five in number-were universally kind. Subsequently the book was translated and published in Russian (Svyaz; Moscow, 1968) and Spanish (Gredos, S.A.; Madrid, 1972). Copies of the first edition have been exhausted for several years, but demand for the material continues. At the behest of the publisher, and with the encouragement of numerous colleagues, a second edition was begun in 1970. The aim was to retain the original format, but to expand the content, especially in the areas of digital communications and com puter techniques for speech signal processing. As before, the intended audience is the graduate-Ievel engineer and physicist, but the psycho physicist, phonetician, speech scientist and linguist should find material of interest.

Book Studies of Speech Analysis and Synthesis

Download or read book Studies of Speech Analysis and Synthesis written by K. N. Stevens and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the research that has been carried out under this contract has been concerned with the specification of attributes of the speech signal that characterize the speech of particular individuals as opposed to attributes that describe the linguistic content of the speech. A related project has been to devise procedures for synthesis of different voices in order to gain further insight into the attributes that distinguish one speaker from another. An objective of some of the more recent work on the contract has been to determine and to interpret the acoustic characteristics of particular consonant and vowels sounds in various phonetic environments, with application both to the speaker-identification problem and to the speech recognition problem. The report includes a listing of reports and papers issued under the contract.

Book Developments in Speech Synthesis

Download or read book Developments in Speech Synthesis written by Mark Tatham and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-04-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a growing need for understanding the process involved in producing and perceiving spoken language, this timely publication answers these questions in an accessible reference. Containing material resulting from many years’ teaching and research, Speech Synthesis provides a complete account of the theory of speech. By bringing together the common goals and methods of speech synthesis into a single resource, the book will lead the way towards a comprehensive view of the process involved in human speech. The book includes applications in speech technology and speech synthesis. It is ideal for intermediate students of linguistics and phonetics who wish to proceed further, as well as researchers and engineers in telecommunications working in speech technology and speech synthesis who need a comprehensive overview of the field and who wish to gain an understanding of the objectives and achievements of the study of speech production and perception.

Book Speech Enhancement

Download or read book Speech Enhancement written by Jacob Benesty and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-01-04 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speech enhancement is a classical problem in signal processing, yet still largely unsolved. Two of the conventional approaches for solving this problem are linear filtering, like the classical Wiener filter, and subspace methods. These approaches have traditionally been treated as different classes of methods and have been introduced in somewhat different contexts. Linear filtering methods originate in stochastic processes, while subspace methods have largely been based on developments in numerical linear algebra and matrix approximation theory. This book bridges the gap between these two classes of methods by showing how the ideas behind subspace methods can be incorporated into traditional linear filtering. In the context of subspace methods, the enhancement problem can then be seen as a classical linear filter design problem. This means that various solutions can more easily be compared and their performance bounded and assessed in terms of noise reduction and speech distortion. The book shows how various filter designs can be obtained in this framework, including the maximum SNR, Wiener, LCMV, and MVDR filters, and how these can be applied in various contexts, like in single-channel and multichannel speech enhancement, and in both the time and frequency domains. First short book treating subspace approaches in a unified way for time and frequency domains, single-channel, multichannel, as well as binaural, speech enhancement Bridges the gap between optimal filtering methods and subspace approaches Includes original presentation of subspace methods from different perspectives

Book Temporal Effects in Speech Analysis and Synthesis

Download or read book Temporal Effects in Speech Analysis and Synthesis written by Robert James Scott and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two major methods of adjusting the time dimention of speech were investigated. One was linear time normalization and the other was arc-length time normalization. In the experiments conducted the distribution of spectral energy was derived by scanning the output of a bank of vocoder analyzer filters. A hybrid computing facility was employed to accomplish the various methods of speech time adjustment. The perceptual effects of time-adjusted synthesized utterances were investigated in an intelligibility test. A dichotic method of time-compression of speech was studied in which information from alternate time samples was supplied to alternate ears. A comparison of the linear and non-linear methods of time normalization suggests that the arc-length method may be superior for use in automatic speech recognition. A number of potential applications of time adjusted speech and possibilities for future research are suggested. (Author).
