Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Parasitology and General Zoology These views are highly interesting, and based as they are upon the work of experienced investigators demand careful consideration. That the results obtained by these observers involve the general con elusion that the islets cannot be regarded as in any sense a tissue sui generis appears to me however, premature, and ex parte in the sense that such a conclusion does not allow 'for certain established facts in the morphology of these structures. I propose therefore to deal briefly with some of the difficulties which appear to me to lie in the way of a full acceptance of this conclusion. Book Introduction to Animal Parasitology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to Animal Parasitology Classic Reprint written by J. D. Smyth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Animal Parasitology Special attention has been paid to presenting the life cycles of parasites in detail, relating these, where possible, to the properties of the environment. When a life cycle is presented in diagrammatic form, in this way, the result is frequently complex, but it has been found that the preparation of such diagrams helps to focus attention on some overlooked aspects of the life cycle. Prominence has also been given to two new and rapidly developing fields of parasitology, namely, immunity to animal parasites and the development oftec for the cultivation of parasites in vitro. Within the past few years remarkable advances have been made in both these fields, and these open up exciting possibilities for the future. Biological research is now being carried out on such a scale throughout the world that a text in most specialised fields is out of date almost as soon This is certainly true in parasitology and the constant flow of reprints reaching the author each week serves to emphasise this fact. Many of the ideas set down here will require reconsideration in the light of further work, and this thought should be constantly before the student, as he turns over the pages of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Parasitology, 1918, Vol. 4: A Quarterly Devoted to Medical Zoology For many years I have been engaged in the study of parasitic worms from N orth' American freshwater hosts, mostly fish; during this time I have had opportunity to examine and compare material from a large number of localities embracing many widely separated points. In this work I have been aided very greatly by studies on individual groups undertaken and published under my direction by various graduate stu dents to whom my Obligation is freely expressed here. In connection with this work it has been necessary to examine critically all original records of parasites from similar hosts and to endeavor to reach a positive determination of the parasite under discussion in each case. This is not a Simple matter, as the records were Often made on the basis of a rapid preliminary examination; furthermore, the total lack of Special reference works on these groups led to the recording of parasitic species under general names taken from the older European writers, and these names are often wanting in definite significance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parasites: A Treatise on the Entozoa of Man and Animals, Including Some Account of the Ectozoa MY introductory treatise on the Entozoa having long been. Out of print, it occurred to me that instead of attempting another edition it would be better to write an entirely new work, employing only such fragmentary portions of the old treatise as would harmonise with the far wider design I have now in view. Whilst, therefore, I have freely utilised a selection of the illustrations given in the elementary volume, comparatively few of its pages have been incorporated in the present work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Parasitology, 1916, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Devoted to Medical Zoology Of more immediate interest are the cases of triradiate strobilae, in which the entire strobila instead Of being flat or ribbon like, as in the normal tapeworm, has a central ridge extending uniformly through out all the proglottids and giving a triradiate figure when seen in cross section. This anomaly may also be combined with the anomalies affect ing individual proglottids mentioned in the preceding paragraph. Twenty-eight such cases have been collected by Vigener (1903) and are summarized in the accompanying table. To this list I have added five more cases, one Of them not hitherto reported. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The External and Internal Parasites of Domestic Animals The external parasites of our domestic animals nearly all belong to the great class of animals which we call Insects, but the internal parasites are, with few exceptions, representatives of the class of Worms. The division of the subjects of these lectures is, therefore, both convenient and natural. The class of Insects includes a far greater number of spe cies than any other class of animals, the number actually amounting to several hundred thousands, each country having a vast number peculiar to itself. They are also exceedingly diverse in habits, as well as in form and structure. In order to show the affinities of the insect-parasites and their position among other insects, it will be necessary to give a brief sketch of the whole class, with a few remarks on the more important peculiarities of their anatomy.
