Book Studies in Natural Illumination in Schoolrooms

Download or read book Studies in Natural Illumination in Schoolrooms written by Arthur Floyd Beal and published by . This book was released on 1929 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin is a summary of about 45,000 observations of daylight illumination made by the United States Public Health Service in a school building in Hagerstown, Md., during the school year 1923-24. The influence of clouds upon the inside illumination, the outside illumination, and the sky brightness has been made the subject of special study. Also, an analysis is made of the ratio of the inside illumination on a desk to the total outside illumination, (due to both skylight and direct sunlight), and of the ratio of the inside illumination to the outside sky brightness; the distribution of the light within the rooms, and the changes in the distribution accompanying changes in other factors or attendant circumstances; and, finally, an analysis is given showing the relationship, under varying cloud conditions, between the inside illumination and the area of the sky vault which is visible from each desk, and a generalized formula for forecasting inside illumination under any set of attendant conditions. At the end of the paper a summary of the conclusions is given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence has accumulated that shows that the quality of indoor environments can affect the health and productivity of adults and children. One consequence is that a movement has emerged to promote the design of schools that have fewer adverse environmental effects. To examine the potential of such design for improving education, several private organizations asked the NRC to review and assess the health and productivity benefits of green schools. This report provides an analysis of the complexity of making such a determination; and an assessment of the potential human health and performance benefits of improvements in the building envelope, indoor air quality, lighting, and acoustical quality. The report also presents an assessment of the overall building condition and student achievement, and offers an analysis of and recommendations for planning and maintaining green schools including research considerations.

Book excerpt: For thousands of years people have aligned their homes with the sun. This tendency decreased with the availability of artificial light. Yet, due to the health effects of artificial light as well as rising energy costs, the issue of designing with daylight is of great importance again today. The primary objective of daylight systems is to make maximum use of daylight for certain building types and climates. The book documents the various dimensions of the optimum use of daylight with particular reference to window orientation, light distribution, and prism technology, and discusses the health and economic related aspects. In the final chapter, existing design concepts are documented in detail, including the expansion of the Art Institute of Chicago Museum in the United States by Renzo Piano Building Workshop,Terminal 3 of the Changi Airport in Singapore by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and the Clever House in Germany by Behnisch Architekten.

Book excerpt: Daylighting offers a general theory and introduction to the use of natural light in architecture. The fourth of Derek Phillip's lighting books draws on his experience to illustrate how best to bring natural light into building design. As sustainability becomes a core principal for designers, daylighting comes to the fore as an alternative to artificial, energy consuming, light. Here, Phillips makes a rational argument for considering daylight first, outlining the arguments in favour of a daylight approach, and goes on to show, through a series of beautifully illustrated case studies, how architects have created buildings in which natural light has been shown to play a major strategic role in the development of the design of a building.
