In the earlier chapters of the present volume, however, the changes have been comparatively small; further information is given, for example, on the leaves of Calamites (p. 36) and the roots of Sphenophyllum (p. 87), but perhaps the most important addition, up to Chapter VII., is the new account of the remarkable Lycopodineous fructification, Mazocarpon, described by Dr. Margaret Benson (p. 213). When we reach the Ferns the alterations become considerable. The true nature of the root-zone in Psaronius is now cleared up, thanks to the work of the late Count Solms-Laubach (p. 274). The geological history of the Osmundaceae has been successfully traced by Kidston and Gwynne-Vaughan, and a summary of their important results is given (p. 278). The rapid growth of our knowledge of the Primofilices, owing to the investigations of Paul Bertrand, Kidston and Gordon, has rendered necessary a complete recasting of Chapter IX.
