We should also be prepared to find that, with several important exceptions these works have been produced by private and not by official enterprise. The bibliography of this class of antiquarian literature is, indeed, extensive and includes, besides the elementary essays of 16th and 17th century official antiquaries, several valuable works produced during the Victorian period. Moreover, during the last thirty years, these unofficial printed books may be supplemented by numerous articles and other periodical essays which are not exclusively published in antiquarian journals. At the same time none of these published books or articles will be found to deal in a comprehensive manner with the several aspects of the national Archives which concern the historical student. The practical Guide to the official sources does not indulge in any disquisitions upon their formulas or scripts. Similarly the hand-book of Palaeography is not concerned with the historical aspect of these documents, nor does the essay in Diplomatic deal with the principles of their classification. They are due mainly to the fact that he was writing as a poet, not as a historian, to delight and amuse his hearers, not to inform them. He would not have been so brimfull of instruction for us if he had aimed at instructing his readers. What should they need to be told of an everyday matter like the pilgrimage to Canterbury They had all probably been wayfarers along the same well-trodden road and put up at the same familiar hostelries. If Chaucer had been a chronicler he would have disposed of the matter, if he mentioned it at all, in a simple entry such as this 1385 In April of this year men went on pilgrimage to Canterbury, according to their wont. They had much joyous pastime on the way, and gave a goodly supper at the Tabard, on their return, to one of their company who had best acquitted him in that sport.' In other words, a host of things get left out of the chronicler's record because they are common and matter of course, which are taken up into the poet's because, for him, the common ways of men and their matter-oi-course habits and usages are full of the zest of life; common as blood and breath, and matter of course as the beating of the heart. History for the most part records only the salient incidents, the violent interruptions which disturb the silent continuity of ordinary life, and are so interesting to read about, so disagreeable to undergo. When these are few, the annals are brief or if they are not brief they are apt to be dull and though we allow that the people were probably happy, we cannot quite forgive them for being happy in such a stupid and uninteresting way. The historian as such has to do with change, not with standing still if he describes stationary conditions at all it is as the result of, or the preparation for, change. And, on the whole, people who live an uneventful life are out of his sphere they are, so to speak, not playing his game. But it is just here that literature, with its more brooding eye, and its more profound concern with life itself, not merely with the arresting or sensational moments of life, steps in, and does for us something which the historian quite properly neglects to do, but which is nevertheless needful to be done. More of such teachers and text-books have survived the passage of years than might have been hoped; but for some time past more enterprising teachers have supplemented their text-books with Source Books - selections of excerpts and translations from ancient chronicles and contemporary records. Yet, so far as I know, no writer has attempted to show the relation between these extracts and the text-books, or to explain on what bases History is built up. This little book - which had its origin in a course of lectures on The Original Sources of English History, which I gave at St. George's School, Harpenden - seeks to fill that gap. Whatever may be the shortcomings, and defects of the present treatment, it is vain to attempt to extenuate or excuse them in a short preface. On the other hand, such merits and new informa tion as the book may possess may be left for the discriminating reader to discover for himself. I offer no apology for having omitted any specific treatment of the history of the English Vocabulary, and of English Syntax, during the centuries between Chaucer's day and our own. Nor do I conceive that those who have a first-hand acquaintance with the subject will make it a ground of reproach to the author, that having, after all, done some thing, he has not attempted to do everything. It seems reasonable that a writer should select for himself the aspects of a subject with which he will deal. As I have myself not been altogether idle, during the last twenty years or so, in attempting to add to knowledge in various domains of the history of our language, I think I am entitled to invite others to give the world systematic treatises, even if these should be no more exhaustive than the treatment of other aspects in the present volume, upon historical English Syntax, and upon English Semantics. I have Observed that these are branches Of English studies which many people consider important for somebody else to tackle. With regard to the present work, the facts here stated are with very few exceptions derived direct from the sources, that is from the documents themselves. The conclusions drawn from these, both the larger generalizations and the more minute points, are independently arrived at, and represent my own interpretation of the facts. I have not looked up specially everything that has previously been written upon the innumerable questions here discussed, but have preferred to make my own inferences from my own material. In all cases where I have taken facts or conclusions from others, I hope and believe that I have made full acknowledgement.
