Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies Early French Poetry The reasons of this ignorance are mainly two; the in efficient and careless way in which French - French, which might be made as useful in education as Latin - is taught, and the lack of English books on the subject. French books, too, are not always easy of access, and our public libraries are generally most deficient in continental literature. And yet the means of acquiring a knowledge of French literature are much more readily got at than those of learning our own. Numberless essays, e'tudes, treatises, collections, and histories have been made in France. In no country have writers found so much appreciation in no country are there more careful editions, more elaborate biographies, and more loving criticism. What the student wants 'is direction and advice; he has to be told when to read and how 5 and, in general, he has to be taught that France has a literature independent of the wellknown names, as original and as well worthy of study as that of our own country. In one small field I propose to endeavour to afford him information and direction. Should he Wish to study the early efforts of France in poetical literature, I h0pe that in the following pages he may find matter that may not be wholly waste of time. Book Studies in French Poetry of the Fifteenth Century

Download or read book Studies in French Poetry of the Fifteenth Century written by C.S. Shapley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My purpose in these studies is to example a careful reading of the too easily despised, too hastily evaluated and too frequently misunderstood poetry of the French fifteenth century. I have begun at the tum of the century with three of the more substantial writers of the first generation (Nesson, Char tier, Taillevent), and while I have in each case read the poet's entire work I have tried to concentrate my efforts on the single poem which seemed his most substantial in terms of the number and importance of the concerns which animate it, the vigor and complexity of his response, and the expres sive richness of the poem as a whole. I have tried in each instance to say only what seemed most relevant and essential, not with respect to any preconceived system but by allowing the categories of my treatment to arise out of a full and extended response to the work itself. When one interrogates a poem in terms of pre-established categories one is all too apt to find what one is seeking and to find only that.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six French Poets: Studies in Contemporary Literature IN the Spring Of 1914, I was invited to deliver a series of lectures on modern French poetry in Boston during the following winter. This book consists of those lec tures, rewritten and arranged for the press. It is a strange thing that while so many Americans and English repair every year to France, SO few Of them, in either country, realized What a serious and self-sacri ficing people the French were making Of themselves, before the present war brought the fact to their notice. TO students Of French literature, this was no matter for surprise. They understood that the earnest and single minded endeavour applied to the arts must have its counterpart in other branches Of the national life. That this was the case, is now abundantly proved. We, in the English-speaking countries, are asking ourselves how we could have so misunderstood the French people. But to be misunderstood has been the lot Of Frenchmen when dealing with anglo-saxons from time immemorial. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Claims of French Poetry: Nine Studies in the Greater French Poets The following Essays are partly an appeal against the common neglect of French poetry by English lovers of literature, and partly an attempt at explaining that neglect, and even, to some extent and in some cases, at justifying it. It seems to me that there is in England a widespread opinion that French poetry is merely rhetoric in verse, and I have tried to deal both with the foundation for this Opinion and with its limitations; and in particular have tried to show by examples how partial its application is, and to prove by liberal quotation how much pleasure may be got out of the French poets even by those whose conception of poetry makes them demand of it things far above rhetoric. The studies were written at different times, but those which have appeared before have been revised with a view to this book. I have to thank Mrs. George cornwallis-west for leave to reprint the essays on English Taste and French Drama and on Ronsard, which were first printed in Anglo Saxon Review; Messrs. Macmillan and Co. For the same permission in the case of the essay on La Fontaine, much of which originally appeared invi the claims OF french poetry. Book The Refrain and the Rise of the Vernacular in Medieval French Music and Poetry

Download or read book The Refrain and the Rise of the Vernacular in Medieval French Music and Poetry written by Jennifer Saltzstein and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 2013 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of the use of the refrain in thirteenth and fourteenth-century French music and poetry, showing how it was skilfully deployed to assert the validity of the vernacular. The relationship between song quotation and the elevation of French as a literary language that could challenge the cultural authority of Latin is the focus of this book. It approaches this phenomenon through a close examination of the refrain, a short phrase of music and text quoted intertextually across thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century musical and poetic genres. The author draws on a wide range of case studies, from motets, trouvère song, plays, romance, vernacular translations, and proverb collections, to show that medieval composers quoted refrains as vernacular auctoritates; she argues that their appropriation of scholastic, Latinate writing techniques workedto authorize Old French music and poetry as media suitable for the transmission of knowledge. Beginning with an exploration of the quasi-scholastic usage of refrains in anonymous and less familiar clerical contexts, the book goeson to articulate a new framework for understanding the emergence of the first two named authors of vernacular polyphonic music, the cleric-trouvères Adam de la Halle and Guillaume de Machaut. It shows how, by blending their craftwith the writing practices of the universities, composers could use refrain quotation to assert their status as authors with a new self-consciousness, and to position works in the vernacular as worthy of study and interpretation. Jennifer Saltzstein is Assistant Professor of Musicology at the University of Oklahoma.

Download or read book From Song to Book written by Sylvia Huot and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the visual representation of an essentially oral text, Sylvia Huot points out, the medieval illuminated manuscript has a theatrical, performative quality. She perceives the tension between implied oral performance and real visual artifact as a fundamental aspect of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century poetics. In this generously illustrated volume, Huot examines manuscript texts both from the performance-oriented lyric tradition of chanson courtoise, or courtly love lyric, and from the self-consciously literary tradition of Old French narrative poetry. She demonstrates that the evolution of the lyrical romance and dit, narrative poems which incorporate thematic and rhetorical elements of the lyric, was responsible for a progressive redefinition of lyric poetry as a written medium and the emergence of an explicitly written literary tradition uniting lyric and narrative poetics. Huot first investigates the nature of the vernacular book in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, analyzing organization, page layout, rubrication, and illumination in a series of manuscripts. She then describes the relationship between poetics and manuscript format in specific texts, including works by widely read medieval authors such as Guillaume de Lorris, Jean de Meun, and Guillaume de Machaut, as well as by lesser-known writers including Nicole de Margival and Watriquet de Couvin. Huot focuses on the writers' characteristic modifications of lyric poetics; their use of writing and performance as theme; their treatment of the poet as singer or writer; and of the lady as implied reader or listener; and the ways in which these features of the text were elaborated by scribes and illuminators. Her readings reveal how medieval poets and book-makers conceived their common project, and how they distinguished their respective roles.
