In this book, Moses presented the Lord's solutions to problems the children of Israel would face! When that happened, the Lord was ready, willing, and able to come to their rescue! In Deuteronomy, we learn the Lord's desired relationship with the children of Israel. The Lord desires to have a similar relationship with each of us - today! We can learn how He treats His people today by watching how He treated His people in Moses' day! Book The Theopolitical Discourses of Moses

Download or read book The Theopolitical Discourses of Moses written by Martin Sicker and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Deuteronomy, the last of the Five Books of Moses or Pentateuch, consists in the main of Moses' final discourses delivered to the children of Israel as they stood poised to begin the conquest and settlement of the land upon which they were to build a national society. The central concern of Moses, as reflected in these discourses, is with the challenge of nation building, creating an Israelite nation out of a mélange of ethnically related tribes and clans that were just liberated from centuries of subjugation and servitude in a relatively sophisticated pagan environment. That which is to bind them together is not a compact between them but rather a common covenant with God to which all would be equal parties. Many of the terms of the covenant were revealed incrementally in the earlier books of the Pentateuch. However, it is only here in Deuteronomy that Moses begins to give them the clearly discernible shape of a constitution for the covenantal society to be established as a nation-state in its divinely assigned territory. Within the constitutional framework set forth in the work is a range of precepts, rules, and regulations governing both those matters that are between man and God and those between man and man, understood as the two sides of a common coin, the covenant. In the effort to comprehend and explain the highly complex biblical text, the author has consulted and cited a wide range of commentaries and studies written over a period of some two millennia that have sought to understand the biblical texts from a variety of perspectives, many of which are virtually inaccessible to those without a good working knowledge of Hebrew.

Book How I Love Your Torah O LORD

Download or read book How I Love Your Torah O LORD written by Daniel I. Block and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the book of Romans in the New Testament, the book of Deuteronomy provides the most systematic and sustained presentation of theology in the Old Testament. And like the Gospel of John, it represents mature theological reflection on God's great acts of salvation, in this case associated with the exodus of Israel from Egypt. Unfortunately, for many Christians, Deuteronomy is a dead book, either because its contents are unknown or because its message is misunderstood. The essays in this collection arise from a larger project driven by a passion to recover for Christians the life-giving message of the Old Testament in general and the gospel according to Moses in particular. The "meditations" cover a wide range of topics, from explorations into the meaning of specific texts to considerations of the ethical and homiletical relevance of the book for Christians today.

Book A Curious Student s Guide to the Book of Deuteronomy

Download or read book A Curious Student s Guide to the Book of Deuteronomy written by Reuven Travis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-06-13 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most common phrases in the Torah is “And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying . . .” So many of the Torah’s commandments are introduced in this way. These words represent God speaking to Moses and instructing him what to repeat or teach to the Jewish people. Yet, this phrase is not found at all in Deuteronomy, and this helps explain why this book is so very different from the other books of the Torah. Deuteronomy is Moses’s book. It is the record of Moses’s final speech to the Jewish people before his death. But this leads to a very basic and very fundamental question. Why are the words of man, even a man as great as Moses, part of God’s holy Torah? A very good question, a powerful one indeed. And while we may not come up with a good or satisfying answer, this book examines and presents life lessons just as important as those found in any other biblical text.

Download or read book Deuteronomy written by Richard J. Clifford and published by Michael Glazier Books. This book was released on 1982 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In no book of the Bible is exclusive fidelity to the Lord held up so insistently to Israel as it is in Deuteronomy. Moses speaks throughout, addressing the people on the threshold of the Lord's land on how they are to live as befits people rescued from Egypt. Israel's essence as a people, ever receiving the life-giving land, ever hearing the word of God through Moses, is unforgettably expressed. As noble as is the theme, however, readers unaware of the covenant background and rhetoric of the book are unlikely to be moved, and may even find the speeches repetitive and monotonous. To appreciate the freshness and power of the sermons, one must first understand how the book came to be organized into its present thirty-four chapters and how covenant traditions were shaped into perennially moving sermons." Download or read book The Words of Moses written by Sarah J. K. Pearce and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2013 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies highlight the character of Deuteronomy's laws of public officials (Deut. 16.18-18.22) as the first draft for a constitutional government of the future. Sarah Pearce explores what these laws meant for Jewish interpreters and their communities in the Second Temple period. Her focus is on the reception and transformation of Deuteronomy's laws on the organisation of justice (Deut. 16.18-17.13): the appointment of local judiciaries; the authority and function of the central court; and the prohibition of single testimony. The author offers a detailed commentary on these laws in sources including the Masoretic Text, the Samaritan Pentateuch, Greek Deuteronomy, the Books of Chronicles, the Temple Scroll, the Damascus Document, Philo of Alexandria, and Josephus. Her aim is to understand the ancient interpreters of Deuteronomy, first and foremost, in their own terms and their own contexts.
