Book Studies in Comparative Odontology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Comparative Odontology Classic Reprint written by Arthur Swayne Underwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Comparative Odontology The immediate object of this book is to render the study of Comparative Odontology easier, and, I am tempted to hope, more attractive to the student. The study of the larger classical handbooks can never be dispensed with by anyone who really wishes to understand the subject, and I trust that a new way of putting things, and a new way of looking at them, may lead to a better appreciation of those standard works. I have en deavoured to intermix the unavoidable detail with broader considerations of great underlying principles, and hfive been at some pains to verify the facts from personal o servation. The figures have been drawn for me by my wife direct from specimens at the various museums, where the kindness of the custodians has enabled her to have access to all that she needed in the way of specimens and invaluable hints. Some few of these drawings are from intentionally very diagrammatic drawings of my own, and the reader is requested to attribute any short comings to my sketches and any excellencies to the artist. Much has been left out, and much has been very lightly touched upon; in all cases my object has been to interest in the first place and instruct in the second, for it is my experience that once a student is interested in a subject its study is no longer a toil, but a delight, and the facts and details become as much part of his daily equipment as his hat and umbrella. Book The Etruscans and the History of Dentistry

Download or read book The Etruscans and the History of Dentistry written by Marshall J. Becker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Etruscans and the History of Dentistry offers a study of the construction and use of gold dental appliances in ancient Etruscan culture, and their place within the framework of a general history of dentistry, with special emphasis on appliances, from Bronze Age Mesopotamia and Egypt to modern Europe and the Americas. Included are many of the ancient literary sources that refer to dentistry - or the lack thereof - in Greece and Rome, as well as the archaeological evidence of ancient dental health. The book challenges many past works in exposing modern scholars’ fallacies about ancient dentistry, while presenting the incontrovertible evidence of the Etruscans’ seemingly modern attitudes to cosmetic dentistry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from World's History and Review of Dentistry HE magnitude of an undertaking like the present work, which we now herewith humbly submit to one of the fore most-professions of the world, far exceeded all our anticipations, although we by no means expected it to be all play. The selec tion and compilation of ponderous matter from a voluminous correspondence and tons of data and statistics, together with the arduous labor in obtaining information from all parts of the world, have sometimes appeared beyond our ability. We flat ter ourselves, however, that the information herein contained, although in many instances incomplete, will be found useful to all dentists who desire to know anything about the inducements, advantages and disadvantages offered in other fields, and the social and official standing of the profession in foreign lands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Columbian, 1938 The nature of this graduate training for specialization is still to be determined, but one thing seems certain and that is that it should be on a university basis and qualitatively equivalent to graduate training in other branches of the university. Since the least graduate work to carry uni versity recognition is that for the master's degree, it might be well to start with that in the field of dentistry. It is conceivable that in any of the special clinical phases of dentistry two academic years of work might be so planned as to satisfy the graduate school requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Dental Surgery or Orthodontics or some other special field of dental practice. Book The Dental Record Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dental Record Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by European Orthodontic Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore European dentistry with Volume 4 of The Dental Record, which summarizes the work of dentists in Europe throughout the year. The book includes scientific research, reports from dental associations, coursework from dental school, veterinary reports and information about laws and regulations. There are several sections which are primarily concerned with dental students. There are articles on how to comport oneself as a dentist, as well as how to diagnose and treat patients. Many European medical schools submitted extensive materials for The Dental Record, the entire course of study for these schools is summarized, including academic requisites, fees, syllabi, coursework and examinations. There are a plethora of lengthy articles discussing dental equipment of the time; one such article analyses the use of electricity in dentistry and surgery, including a detailed description of batteries and electric lights, followed by a discussion of how the equipment is applied to dentistry. Similarly technical articles appear throughout the journal, each with corresponding sketches and diagrams. State regulation of dentistry was more advanced in Europe than in America, and this book discusses the various laws and regulations on the practice of dentistry. Court cases are reported upon for the information of dentists practising in the corresponding jurisdictions. The Dental Record is not limited to human dentistry, with papers from veterinarians regarding animal dentistry also included in the book. The Dental Record is more science and research oriented than its American cousin, The Archives of Dentistry, the latter of which is more like an almanac than scholarly journal. Still, readers of The Dental Record can expect to gain a thorough understanding of the science underlying the practice of dentistry in Europe in the late 19th Century. Researchers in law, science and dentistry will enjoy this volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Dental Practice IT has not been my purpose, in this work, to attempt to wade in the deep waters of physio logical and pathological research. I am content to leave the elaboration of theories, and the search after causes, in the able hands that are now, on both sides of the Atlantic, pursuing these investigations with a trained skill which cannot fail to give us much more light on the now hidden, or only suspected, sources of dental disease, and to confine myself, as strictly as a clear explanation of my meaning will permit, to the treatment of abnormal conditions of the teeth. We are now thrust upon a world unsteady, dubious, and even reluctant to accept us. The thought of engaging faithfully in the practice of dentistry in an economic chaos presents itself as a horrible abyss; yet so true and vigorous has been our training that we face the prospect, head erect, unwavering; this is just another Obstacle to overcome. It is fitting, therefore, that before plunging into these grim realities awaiting us, we pause and enjoy a brief interlude, a moment in which to reflect, to smile, even to laugh. Download or read book The Dental Obturator 1856 Vol 1 written by John S. Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Obturator, 1856, Vol. 1: Devoted to the Science and Art of Dentistry; Published Quarterly A mote floating in the sunbeam will sometimes arrest the eye and inspire to higher thoughts. So a thought, though insignificant in itself, may flit across the intellectual vision and lead the wsv to fields of investigation, rich in mines of truth and science. We do not desire to be egotistical, but desire to give practical facts, though home-gathered rather than word-pages of theory, and court more the excellence of the operator than the writer. Neither is the obturator, the offspring of speculation; for in our Opinion the practice of this specialty of the healing art calls no man into the busy mart of trade. The pedlar of dental devices, secrets, or sentiments holds no seat in her Temple. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Odontological Society of Pennsylvania, 1889-1895 Dr. J. D. Patterson, Kansas city_twenty years ago I had the misfortune to use cotton fillings, following the precedent of my pre ceptor. We did not use carbolized cosmoline as a dressing, but what was common at that time, creosote and carbolic acid. The frequent failures resulting from that practice, together with the advice and experience of others, caused me to soon discard it, and for a great many years I have employed another method. I do not wish to criticize. If it were not for the variety of opinions it would be useless for dentists to come together for discussion. I have great respect for those who take a bold stand and back their asser tions with logic. With all deference to Dr. Head, I have no confidence in the method he represents. It is no doubt better than the old method of carbolic acid alone, or better than the old English method of using cotton with sandarach. I think other methods are better in point of efficacy. There is an objection in mind to gutta-percha, so universally used throughout the West, and that is its tendency to leakage, I have found the fault present many times.
