Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Bergson's Philosophy Professor Bergson has permitted me to translate from a private letter some comments of his on certain of my criticisms. Professor Edmund H. Hollands has given the first two parts a careful reading, in the manuscript, and his able criticisms and suggestions, mainly concerning the matter itself, have been of great benefit. I am no less obliged, for help in improving the literary form, to Professor S. L. Whitcomb, whose critical ability has beenpatiently applied to a careful revision, page by page, of the whole manuscript. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henri Bergson a Study in Radical Evolution I have not been careful to remove in preparing the book for the press, as I could not assume that more than a small proportion Of my readers would be specialists in philosophy, and as I believed that the non-philosophical reader would generally prefer the informal to the more circumstantial and more carefully modified presentation suited to the study and to pure scholarship. I have also moderated the rigour Of a number of passages which I was sure, on second consideration, could not possibly be of much interest to any but comparatively hard ened philosophers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bergson for Beginners: A Summary of His Philosophy The aim of this book is to give the reader a general sketch of the philosophy of Professor Henri Bergson, in the order of its development and in the simplest manner that is consistent with accuracy, and so to introduce him to the original works and more especially to the excellent English translations. The summary or synopsis of Time and Free Will is on a scale sufficient to show the nature of the argument; it has been made fuller than that of the later books in view of the obvious importance of the Esmi for the student, since it gives an exposition of the ideas which underlie the Whole of Bergson's philosophy. My summary was made from the French, but I have compared it with the English translation in order to avoid any confusion in technical terms. That I should have ventured to condense so eloquent and (if I may add a per sonal opinion) so generally cogent an argument must find its apology and vindication in a desire to lead others to his writings. Those who meet with obscurities or suspect misconceptions have thus an easy remedy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in the Philosophy of Bergson Thought, all freshness of conception, get destroyed. Everything you touch is shopworn. The over technicality and consequent dreariness of the younger disciples at our american universities is appalling. It comes from too much following of german models and manners. Let me fervently express the hope, he continues in appeal to his English audience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Critical Exposition of Bergson s Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Critical Exposition of Bergson s Philosophy Classic Reprint written by J. M'kellar Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical Exposition of Bergson's Philosophy The purpose of this work is not exposition, but criticism. Professor Bergson's thought is elaborated only to such an extent as to ensure that the criticism shall be intelligible. I am conscious that in outlining the main ideas of his philosophy I have stripped them of the brilliant metaphorical dress in which Bergson himself has clothed them, and divorced them from the charm of a peculiarly flexible and graceful literary style. My only defence is that metaphor is not always conducive to clearness, and that illustration is apt to be confused with argument. My aim has been to present clearly the root ideas of his philosophy, so far as they appear in the work which he has made public; to examine their validity; and to consider their value as a contribution to modern philosophic thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Under the aegis of time Suzanne Guerlac displaces matter, intuition, memory, and vitalism of the early twentieth century into the wake of poststructuralism and the dilemmas of nature and culture here and now. This book is a landmark for anyone working in the currents of philosophy, science, and literature. The force and vision of the work will enthuse and inspire every one of its readers." ―Tom Conley, Harvard University "In recent years, we have grown accustomed to philosophical language that is intensely self-conscious and rhetorically thick, often tragic in tone. It is enlivening to read Bergson, who exerts so little rhetorical pressure while exacting such a substantial effort of thought.... Bergson's texts teach the reader to let go of entrenched intellectual habits and to begin to think differently—to think in time.... Too much and too little have been said about Bergson. Too much, because of the various appropriations of his thought. Too little, because the work itself has not been carefully studied in recent decades."—from Thinking in Time Henri Bergson (1859–1941), whose philosophical works emphasized motion, time, and change, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1927. His work remains influential, particularly in the realms of philosophy, cultural studies, and new media studies. In Thinking in Time, Suzanne Guerlac provides readers with the conceptual and contextual tools necessary for informed appreciation of Bergson's work. Guerlac's straightforward philosophical expositions of two Bergson texts, Time and Free Will (1888) and Matter and Memory (1896), focus on the notions of duration and memory—concepts that are central to the philosopher's work. Thinking in Time makes plain that it is well worth learning how to read Bergson effectively: his era and our own share important concerns. Bergson's insistence on the opposition between the automatic and the voluntary and his engagement with the notions of "the living," affect, and embodiment are especially germane to discussions of electronic culture.

Book Bergson Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bergson It has been thought worth including in the present series a sketch of the philosophy of a contemporary thinker, M. Bergson. The curiosity and admiration he has aroused in wide circles in this and other countries of Europe, and also in America, his reassertion - in a far more explicit form, it is true - of one of the imperishable ideas of antiquity, his bold arraignment which is at the same time in a way a justification of the whole course of philosophy from Socrates downwards, his conception, for the first time definite and duly limited, of evolution, and his great learning - all seem to justify his inclusion. Book Henri Bergson an Account of His Life and Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Henri Bergson an Account of His Life and Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Algot Henrik Leonard Ruhe and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henri Bergson an Account of His Life and Philosophy My chief object in writing this book is that it may serve as a guide to the work of Monsieur Bergson. The biographical chapter is subsidiary to that end, and the remaining chapters are arranged to give the reader a comprehensive view of his teaching. The main principles and most important applications of the philosophy are set out at length and in language closely following Monsieur Bergson's own, though rarely by quotation except when passages are taken from sources inaccessible without difficult research. Detailed criticism of opposing doctrines is for the most part either omitted or very much abridged, and arguments in Support are shortened. When the same subject has been discussed in different books certain parts of those books arc collated in the general exposition I have given of that subject. And I believe there is not one statement included that lacks the direct authority of some writing or public utterance of Monsieur Bergson himself. Obviously it is out of the question on this plan to give specific references either in the text or by notes. Book Bergson and Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bergson and Religion Classic Reprint written by Lucius Hopkins Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bergson and Religion As the reader will quickly see, this is not primarily a book on philosophy, but a book on religion. Otherwise the writing of it should have been left to a philosopher, and that I do not pretend to be. Still, the ground covered lies between the two sub J ects (or, rather, over laps both) and might therefore be considered open to occupancy by students of either sub jcet. Theoretically, there is no reason why a philosopher's religious deductions should be any more reliable than the philosophical de scriptions of a student of religion, for just as philosophy has its intricacies so religion also has its subtleties, and the subtleties of religion can be caught only through that insight which is bestowed by an intimate historical under standing. In this task the application of philo sophical criteria may harm as well as help. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
