Book Linkages Between Arctic Warming and Mid Latitude Weather Patterns

Download or read book Linkages Between Arctic Warming and Mid Latitude Weather Patterns written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic has been undergoing significant changes in recent years. Average temperatures are rising twice as fast as they are elsewhere in the world. The extent and thickness of sea ice is rapidly declining. Such changes may have an impact on atmospheric conditions outside the region. Several hypotheses for how Arctic warming may be influencing mid-latitude weather patterns have been proposed recently. For example, Arctic warming could lead to a weakened jet stream resulting in more persistent weather patterns in the mid-latitudes. Or Arctic sea ice loss could lead to an increase of snow on high-latitude land, which in turn impacts the jet stream resulting in cold Eurasian and North American winters. These and other potential connections between a warming Arctic and mid-latitude weather are the subject of active research. Linkages Between Arctic Warming and Mid-Latitude Weather Patterns is the summary of a workshop convened in September 2013 by the National Research Council to review our current understanding and to discuss research needed to better understand proposed linkages. A diverse array of experts examined linkages between a warming Arctic and mid-latitude weather patterns. The workshop included presentations from leading researchers representing a range of views on this topic. The workshop was organized to allow participants to take a global perspective and consider the influence of the Arctic in the context of forcing from other components of the climate system, such as changes in the tropics, ocean circulation, and mid-latitude sea surface temperature. This report discusses our current understanding of the mechanisms that link declines in Arctic sea ice cover, loss of high-latitude snow cover, changes in Arctic-region energy fluxes, atmospheric circulation patterns, and the occurrence of extreme weather events; possible implications of more severe loss of summer Arctic sea ice upon weather patterns at lower latitudes; major gaps in our understanding, and observational and/or modeling efforts that are needed to fill those gaps; and current opportunities and limitations for using Arctic sea ice predictions to assess the risk of temperature/precipitation anomalies and extreme weather events over northern continents.

Book Some Aspects of the Middle Stratosphere

Download or read book Some Aspects of the Middle Stratosphere written by B. W. Boville and published by montreal : arctic meteorology research group, mcgill university. This book was released on 1965 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mean pressure patterns in the middle stratosphere and the latitudinal distribution of total ozone are presented for both hemispheres. It is then inferred that the major stratospheric warmings are probably associated with non-linear baroclinic interaction between troposphere and stratosphere. The major difficulties in resolving the problem arise from the absence of vertical motion measurements and our present inability to model effectively on the planetary scale. (Author).

Book Studies in Artic and Stratospheric Meteorology

Download or read book Studies in Artic and Stratospheric Meteorology written by F. KENNETH. HARE and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research was conducted with regard to the structure and energetics of the polar-night westerlies. The 80 degree W cross sections to the 35-km level and the hemispheric charts to the 25-mb level reveal a circumpolar stratospheric system which is characteristically eccentric and bi-polar. These are features related to tropospheric activity. Energies and transports computed by geostrophic Fourier techniques are presented. Perturbations involving conversions usually associated with baroclinic wave activity were identified in wave numbers one to four. Ozone concentrations are shown to be influenced by this wave activity. A brief review is also given of certain climatological studies. (Author).

Book Atmospheric Science at NASA

Download or read book Atmospheric Science at NASA written by Erik M. Conway and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-12-08 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, 2008 ASLI Choice Awards. Atmospheric Science Librarians International This book offers an informed and revealing account of NASA’s involvement in the scientific understanding of the Earth’s atmosphere. Since the nineteenth century, scientists have attempted to understand the complex processes of the Earth’s atmosphere and the weather created within it. This effort has evolved with the development of new technologies—from the first instrument-equipped weather balloons to multibillion-dollar meteorological satellite and planetary science programs. Erik M. Conway chronicles the history of atmospheric science at NASA, tracing the story from its beginnings in 1958, the International Geophysical Year, through to the present, focusing on NASA’s programs and research in meteorology, stratospheric ozone depletion, and planetary climates and global warming. But the story is not only a scientific one. NASA’s researchers operated within an often politically contentious environment. Although environmental issues garnered strong public and political support in the 1970s, the following decades saw increased opposition to environmentalism as a threat to free market capitalism. Atmospheric Science at NASA critically examines this politically controversial science, dissecting the often convoluted roles, motives, and relationships of the various institutional actors involved—among them NASA, congressional appropriation committees, government weather and climate bureaus, and the military.

Book The Dynamic Meteorology of the Stratosphere and Mesosphere

Download or read book The Dynamic Meteorology of the Stratosphere and Mesosphere written by James Holton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the meteorology of the stratosphere and mesophere has been simulated in the past few years by concerns over possible depletion of the ozone layer as a result of reactions involving pollutants introduced by human activities. Concurrently there has been an upsurge in research on various aspects of the meteorology of the stratosphere. This monograph provides an account of the fundamental dynamical processes which control the general circulation of the stratosphere and mesophere and are thus responsible for the transport of trace substances in that region of the atmosphere. Principles necessary for understanding the dynamics of large-scale motions in the stratosphere and mesosphere are systematically developed so that this monograph should prove useful not only as a reference work for research scientists, but as a textbook for courses in dynamic meteorology of the upper atmosphere.
