Book Applied Zoology and Biotechnology

Download or read book Applied Zoology and Biotechnology written by Dr. Sachin D. Misar and published by AG Publishing House. This book was released on with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term ‘biotechnology’ was used before the twentieth century for traditional activities such as making dairy products such as cheese and curd, as well as bread, wine, beer, etc. But none of these could be considered biotechnology in the modern sense. Genetic alteration of organisms through selective breeding, plant cloning by grafting, etc. do not fall under biotechnology More than a decade into the first human genome sequencing, the use of bioinformatic analysis has been steadily increasing. There are more web-based freely available databases and analytical tools than ever before. Modern biology has pervaded even the social sciences. For example, sociologists and psychologists are now probing how the epigenomic effects of environmental factors (including social factors) might shape the personality and behavior of the offspring postnatally. The National Center for Biotechnology Information has established an epigenomics database, which will be immensely useful to scientists in the near future. Thus, bioinformatics has been slowly but steadily pervading all branches of biology and beyond. In keeping with this, more and more bioinformatics books are being written for experts, which do not necessarily cater to the needs of the non-experts. People are studying biotechnology in different ways. Some people are devoted to developing new computational tools, both from software and hardware viewpoints, for the better handling and processing of biological data. They develop new models and new algorithms for existing questions and propose and tackle new questions when new experimental techniques bring in new data. Other people take the study of bioinformatics as the study of biology with the viewpoint of informatics and systems. These people also develop tools when needed, but they are more interested in understanding biological procedures and mechanisms. They do not restrict their research to computational study, but try to integrate computational and experimental invest.

Book Zoology Conservation And Management

Download or read book Zoology Conservation And Management written by Dr. Parimala B and published by AG PUBLISHING HOUSE (AGPH Books). This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the important roles that wild animals play in the world today is a very important subject. They are an important part of the ecosystem because they are a natural resource that can be used over and over again. They play an important role in maintaining food webs and food chains, keeping ecological balance in the natural world, and making sure that all living things, including humans, have clean places to live. This book talks about animal welfare, veterinary care, handling, and transportation. It also talks about zoos and zoo exhibit design; animal nutrition; reproduction; behaviour (including enrichment and training); and animal behaviour. The book also talks about zoos and how to design zoo exhibits. It focuses on how zoos work, their history, how they are run, the ethics of running a zoo, as well as zoo law and laws that protect animals. For wild animal species to be kept, protected, and reproduced scientifically and responsibly across the country, we have a hard job of educating the majority of the public, and maybe even everyone in the country. They should be kept up not only to the optimal density but also to the desired result, above the carrying capacity so that they can be harvested for money. This management should go on until the right number of animals are in the area

Download or read book Volume 1 Systematics written by Karl F. Koopman and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering 100 years of zoological research, the Handbook of Zoology represents a vast store of knowledge. Handbook of Zoology provides an in-depth treatment of the entire animal kingdom covering both invertebrates and vertebrates. It publishes comprehensive overviews on animal systematics and morphology and covers extensively further aspects like physiology, behavior, ecology and applied zoological research. Although our knowledge regarding many taxonomic groups has grown enormously over the last decades, it is still the objective of the Handbook of Zoology to be comprehensive in the sense that text and references together provide a solid basis for further research. Editors and authors seek a balance between describing species richness and diversity, explaining the importance of certain groups in a phylogenetic context and presenting a review of available knowledge and up-to-date references. New contributions to the series present the combined effort of an international team of editors and authors, entirely published in English and tailored to the needs of the international scientific community. Upcoming volumes and projects in progress include volumes on Annelida (Volumes 1-3), Bryozoa, Mammalia, Miscellaneous Invertebrates, Nannomecoptera, Neomecoptera and Strepsiptera and are followed later by fishes, reptiles and further volumes on mammals. Background The renowned German reference work Handbook of Zoology was founded in the 1920's by Professor Willi Kükenthal in Berlin and treated the complete animal kingdom from single cell organisms to mammals in eight thematic volumes: Volume I Protozoa, Porifera, Colenteratea, Mesozoa (1925); Volume II Vermes (1933/34); Volume III Arthropoda ex. Insecta (1927/1932); Volume IV Arthropoda: Insecta; Volume V Solenogastres, Mollusca, Echinoderma (1925); Volume VI Pisces / Amphibia (1930); Volume VII Reptilia / Aves (1931); Volume VIII Mammalia. The Volumes IV Arthropoda: Insecta and VII Mammalia continued publication into the present with the most recent contributions in English language. Adapting to the accelerating speed of scientific discovery in the past decades the Handbook of Zoology entered a next phase in 2010. In the new edition of the Handbook of Zoology, the original eight thematic volumes gave way for smaller and more flexible groupings that reflect the current state of phylogenetic knowledge. All subsequent volumes were published in print as well as e-book format. The Handbook of Zoology is additionally offered as a database, the Handbook of Zoology Online, which can easily be searched and rapidly updated. Original Handbook material (ca. 28 000 pages) has been reordered along taxonomic (instead of bibliographical) categories and forms the historical basis of this Online Reference Work. As a living Online Reference, the content is continuously updated and new content added. The material can be accessed through taxonomic and subject categories as well as free text, with a diversity of linking and search options. Faster publication times through online-first publication, reference- and cross-linking, and make the Handbook of Zoology highly attractive to both authors and users.

Download or read book Applied Myrmecology written by Robert K Vander Meer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ants have always fascinated the nature observer. Reports from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia indicate that ants interested humans long ago. Myrmecology as a science had its beginning in the last century with great naturalists like Andre, Darwin, Emery, Escherich, Fabre, Fields, Forel, Janet, Karawaiew, McCook, Mayr, Smith, Wasmann and Wheeler. They studied ants as an interesting biological phenomenon, with little thought of the possible beneficial or detrimental effects ants could have on human activities (see Wheeler 1910 as an example). When Europeans began colonizing the New World, serious ant problems occurred. The first reports of pest ants came from Spanish and Portuguese officials of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Trinidad, The West Indies, Central America and South America. Leaf-cutting ants were blamed for making agricultural development almost impossible in many areas. These ants, Atta and Acromyrmex species, are undoubtedly the first ants identified as pests and may be considered to have initiated interest and research in applied myrmecology (Mariconi 1970).
