Download or read book Studies Early French Poetry Classic Reprint written by Walter Besant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies Early French Poetry The reasons of this ignorance are mainly two; the in efficient and careless way in which French - French, which might be made as useful in education as Latin - is taught, and the lack of English books on the subject. French books, too, are not always easy of access, and our public libraries are generally most deficient in continental literature. And yet the means of acquiring a knowledge of French literature are much more readily got at than those of learning our own. Numberless essays, e'tudes, treatises, collections, and histories have been made in France. In no country have writers found so much appreciation in no country are there more careful editions, more elaborate biographies, and more loving criticism. What the student wants 'is direction and advice; he has to be told when to read and how 5 and, in general, he has to be taught that France has a literature independent of the wellknown names, as original and as well worthy of study as that of our own country. In one small field I propose to endeavour to afford him information and direction. Should he Wish to study the early efforts of France in poetical literature, I h0pe that in the following pages he may find matter that may not be wholly waste of time. Book The Claims of French Poetry

Download or read book The Claims of French Poetry written by John C. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Claims of French Poetry: Nine Studies in the Greater French Poets The following Essays are partly an appeal against the common neglect of French poetry by English lovers of literature, and partly an attempt at explaining that neglect, and even, to some extent and in some cases, at justifying it. It seems to me that there is in England a widespread opinion that French poetry is merely rhetoric in verse, and I have tried to deal both with the foundation for this Opinion and with its limitations; and in particular have tried to show by examples how partial its application is, and to prove by liberal quotation how much pleasure may be got out of the French poets even by those whose conception of poetry makes them demand of it things far above rhetoric. The studies were written at different times, but those which have appeared before have been revised with a view to this book. I have to thank Mrs. George cornwallis-west for leave to reprint the essays on English Taste and French Drama and on Ronsard, which were first printed in Anglo Saxon Review; Messrs. Macmillan and Co. For the same permission in the case of the essay on La Fontaine, much of which originally appeared invi the claims OF french poetry. Book The French Revolution and the English Poets

Download or read book The French Revolution and the English Poets written by Albert Elmer Hancock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution and the English Poets: A Study in Historical Criticism This little book is a revision of a study made at Harvard University and presented there as a dis sertation for the doctor's degree. The work was completed in April, - before the appearance of Professor Dowden's book on the same sub jcet, - and it is now published, by the advice of friends, as a slight contribution to the strictly scientific or historical criticism of the English Roman-tic Movement. The field, perhaps, has been already well ploughed; but the reploughing, with the historical method, has yielded some more or less important discoveries and has placed some old ideas in stronger lights. The repetition of certain matters of common knowledge has been necessary, at times, in order to preserve a logical and continuous argument. I am glad to record here many obligations to preceding studies, es pecially to the writings of Morley and Taine; to these aids I have added the results of my own oh servation and reflection. With a new collation of materials, new interpretations of certain facts, and the maintenance of a historical point of View, the book, I trust, has an individuality of its own, and. Without that one ill-written manuscript the world would have been poorer by how exquisite a dream 1 Had not this unique bloom remained, it would have been impossible to imagine that so rare and delicate a flower could have sprung in the unsheltered fields of mediaeval France. Book Into Print

Download or read book Into Print written by Leah L. Chang and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Printers were powerful figures in the creation of early modern books: they determined the physical appearance of books, changed content, and even altered or eliminated the name of the author to suit their own commercial and cultural interests. These interventions encouraged the birth of modern notions of authorship, for they compelled writers, editors, and printers to confront questions of textual ownership and authority. In the publication of female authors, however, book producers had to grapple with new concerns about authority and value since female authors were few and far between and their appeal was far from guaranteed. Certainly, the novelty of female authors could represent both an economic and cultural niche for the enterprising printer, but that same novelty in a culture unaccustomed to women's literary production was also a risky investment.

Book Music Authorship and the Book in the First Century of Print

Download or read book Music Authorship and the Book in the First Century of Print written by Kate van Orden and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-10-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to author a piece of music? What transforms the performance scripts written down by musicians into authored books? In this fascinating cultural history of Western music’s adaptation to print, Kate van Orden looks at how musical authorship first developed through the medium of printing. When music printing began in the sixteenth century, publication did not always involve the composer: printers used the names of famous composers to market books that might include little or none of their music. Publishing sacred music could be career-building for a composer, while some types of popular song proved too light to support a reputation in print, no matter how quickly they sold. Van Orden addresses the complexities that arose for music and musicians in the burgeoning cultures of print, concluding that authoring books of polyphony gained only uneven cultural traction across a century in which composers were still first and foremost performers.
